Brown bears eat nuts, moose, deer, berries, grass and other foods. They are most active at dawn but can be up any time. Bears rest during the day in dense forests and dig with their claws for food and dens. Bears hibernate alone in remote dens over winter, living off stored fat, and mate in early summer though cubs are not born until fall. Newborn cubs are blind and helpless but grow quickly on their mother's rich milk, staying with her until 2-3 years old. Brown bears live in a variety of habitats including forests and meadows, with home ranges from 10-1000 square miles depending on available food sources.
