British Colonization Of Early America
The United States has come a long way from British colonization. It is without a doubt that today it
holds the tittle of one of the world's most progressive super–power nation. Its extensive history from
colonial settlement to sovereignty is due to its many highs lows of political social and economic
changes. The United States' history has made a significant impact on the nation that they are today;
through the lens of political economical and social aspects we can underline major events of
American history that makes it "the land of the free" that it is present day. The young United States
of America, as we know it today was once the thirteen colonies under British rule. During the
colonial era there were a number of people (British) who

New England Colonies Dbq Analysis
Today's world portrays countries that each have distinct characteristics religiously as well as
economically. In the British colonies before 1700, the colonies could be dispersed into two distinct
regions, the Chesapeake colonies, and New England colonies. Both areas varied in religion and
economy, and thrived in different ways. For the New England colonies, the offering of religious
freedom and an end to persecution in England caused many Puritans to sail to New England.
However, the main motivation for people going to the Chesapeake colonies was to get rich fast, as
well as other economic goals. All in all, the distinct traits of different regions of the continental
British colonies caused the creation of two very distinct territories. In ... Show more content on

For colonists of New England, religion was undoubtedly the most important factor for migrating to
the New World. The promise of no persecution of Puritans caused Puritans to flock to the New
World quickly, and to do so with their entire family. Chesapeake colonies were settled largely by
young, white males seeking to become wealthy in the New World through farming. However, land
was given away by how many people one had in their family, as well as how many slaves the person
brought over, so the wealthy still received the most land. All in all, the distinct differences of these
two regions created two places that seemed to have characteristics so contrasting that they could be
different countries, even though they were united through their British heritage and

British Colonies In America
As the British colonies in the Americas were growing and expanding, Britain attempted to keep the
colonies under their control using several different techniques. However these techniques backfired
and ultimately failed, causing the new British colonies to fight for their own independence from
Great Britain. The main methods Britain used in order to maintain and increase control over the
colonies were taxation, mercantilism, and the growing power of parliament. Britain imposed
numerous taxes on the colonies because they believed that only a taxation system developed and
administered by London would suffice. Many of the of the colonial governments were reluctant to
tax their own colonies forcing Britain to impose the taxes themselves, after

The Impact Of The British Revolution In Colonial America
Following the French and Indian War, Great Britain began to tighten control over the American
colonies. Britain constricted the rights of the colonists by enacting numerous pieces of legislation.
Some of these acts attempted to tax the colonists on products such as stamps, tea, and currency.
After which, what legislature was passed by the British Parliament, resistance from the American
colonists grew due to these policies of legislation. Changes in British policy in the 1770s, led to a
revolution in colonial America evident in political, economic, and social issues. The Revolutionary
War was caused by the British Parliament, one is because of the political issues. For example, on
January 14, 1776, George Greenville explained that Britain had the supreme legislative power over
America (Document 1). According to Greenville, Britain had this supreme legislative power because
Parliament had provided the colonists with much of their needs (Document 1). Greenville continued
that this was why British Parliament believed they had the power to impose taxes on the American
colonies (Document 1). As a member of British Parliament, Greenville believed that America should
obey Britain because of the protection the British provide to the colonies (Document 1). Some of the
protection the British provided was military protection from the Indians (Document 1). Greenville's
statement proved that Britain believed they were politically superior of the American colonists.

How Did The British Invasion Affect America
The British Invasion
The British Invasion started in the late 1950's when The Beatles first came to America. It happened
when the American tone and image of Rock–N–Roll and Blues became popular with the younger
british population. British groups started to mix styles with american and british. The first british
band to make an impact on what americans were listening to was the Tornados instrumental Telstar
which hit number one on the u.s hot 100. That is when the British invasion really started to affect
America.
The craze started to really pick up when the beatles were introduced in october 29, 1963. It
happened when The Washington post published the first story in the U.S about the craze around the
rock group the Beatles. CBS Evening News wanted something fun ... Show more content on

Kennedy was assassinated. A little after that show aired a viewer by the name of Marsha Albert
wrote a letter to a dj Carroll James asking in the letter why couldn't americans have music like
britain did. Later on in December James had Albert introduce the song " I Want to Hold Your Hand "
on the radio live. Next thing records shops knew they were getting requests for albums that they
didn't have because of the song airing on live radio. The following week James sent the record out to
other djs around the nation which caused the same reaction everywhere. December 26th the album
was released three weeks ahead of the scheduled time. The beatles would go to get 30 different
listings on the Hot 100. Although the Beatles were the major contributor to the british invasion there
were also other bands whose music spread across the nation. Take Dusty Springfield who released a
solo album and her song " I Only Want to be With You " hit the hot 100 list. Dusty was also
described as "the finest white soul singer of her era". A lot of other british invasion bands made it
big in america like Peter Gordon and the Animals, Manfred Mann, Freddie

The Colonization Of The New World
The colonization of the New World by the English began after Queen Elizabeth passed in 1603. This
is when King James I signed a treaty with Spain ending decades of warfare after succeeding to the
throne and needing new sources of income, the British decided to act on what they had previously
ignored for a variety of reasons. The first colonies formed into two distinct regions, the Chesapeake
and New England. Although both regions were colonized by persons of English descent, they
contrasted politically, economically, and socially but had similarities as well. Their reasons for
colonization, the location of their settlements, and their intrinsic beliefs determined their differences
and similarities.
In 1607, the Virginia Company of London sponsored a group of one hundred settlers, mainly well to
do adventurers, that established the first English colony on the Chesapeake Bay, Jamestown,
currently the state of Virginia. They came with the intent of finding gold and getting rich by trading
with the Indians. But as a result of their eagerness for money, they failed to put enough thought into
the location they chose to settle which ended up being a swamp. This environmental condition
started the colony off to a negative start, with the colonists suffered high mortality rates early on due
to disease and famine. John Rolfe, a farmer and scientist, introduced a new tough strain of tobacco
and it became perhaps the most important reason for Virginia's survival. It certainly

With the defeat of the Spanish armada in 1588, Spain began a steady decline to a second rate power.
Consequently shifting their original goal of exploring to maintaining or colonizing what lands they
still possess.
Spain's goal of spreading Catholicism was undoubtable strengthened when the Pope sanctioned all
Spanish efforts. Thus, slavery of Native Americans was justified, and would liberate them in the
eyes of God. In effort to prevent British protestant influence, Spain declared that Non–Spanish
citizens and Non–Spanish Christians were not permitted to settle in their borders.
During this time period a nation's wealth and power can be measured by the amount of land in
which they possess. For example, Spain controlled a vast empire that stretched from modern
California to Peru . The Spanish Empire was so vast that it had rivaled that of Ancient Rome.
Although unlike the British and French, Spain established an empire of towns, and modern day
Mexico City served as the center of Spanish control. Along with establishing the first university in
the new world, Spain also established St. Augustine and Santa Fe as response to the British and
French expansion efforts.
British Imperial Goals: With the inspiration of Christopher Columbus, Sir Francis Drake
circumnavigated the world for a second time in 1580. Which undoubtedly laid the frame work for
English colonization.

British Definition Of Freedom In Early America
1. Early Great Britain's influence on the New World gave way for developing colonies. Being
supportive of laws, the British passed on their methods of freedom to the Americas. The British
believed that a crucial part of freedom was to obey a specific structure of laws, to be free was to be
under government rule. Therefore, "British freedom celebrated the rule of the law, the right to live
under legislation". Furthermore, religion, specifically Christianity, also played an important role in
the birth of America's definition of freedom. Looking at freedom through a religious lens " The
Puritan settlers of colonial Massachusetts...believed their colony the embodiment of true Christianty,
planted this spiritual definition of freedom on American soil". The American definition of freedom
was inspired by both these interpretations, the Puritan and the British. ... Show more content on

Freedom in America and property went hand and hand; without the ownership of property,
indivduals were not granted the privilege of living freely. The security of property was recognized as
a foundation of freedom in early America. This was so because without property one was viewed
poorly, "those who did not control their own lives ought to not have a voice in governing the state.
Political freedom required economic independence". Therefore, freedom was not awarded to those
without control of land and subsequently, control over their own lives. Furthermore, the connection
between personal liberty and private property ownership paralleled that of the relationship between
land control and complete freedom. Personal freedom is defined as, "the ability to make crucial
individual choices free from outside coercion". But without land, people were already viewed as
incompetent for individuality, so it would be impossible for one to achieve personal freedom. This
does in fact make owning land a prerequisite for personal freedom. In conclusion, there is a direct
relationship between land ownership and

The British Empire During Colonial America
The British Empire in Colonial America The colonization of Virginia, Maryland and the
Massachusetts Bay corresponds to pivotal points in history that began the formation of our modern
day United States of America. In all three of these regions the process of transplantation developed
because of the hunger of finding the Northwest Passage and ultimately the search for a get rich–
quick–scheme, gold. Besides their initial intentions, other common factors were the shortages of
financial resources and the need for continuous investment from London. Virginia After receiving a
charter from James I, the London Company sailed to the Americas with almost 150 men aboard the
Godspeed, the Discovery, and the Susan Constant. Voyages during those times were treacherous,
hence the survival of only a little more than two–thirds of the original crew and passengers when
they made landfall in 1607. While entering the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, they went up the river
which they called the James. They decided to establish a colony on a peninsula they called
Jamestown. It was a poor site location; it was low and swampy; hot and humid in the summer,
which caused outbreaks of malaria; they were surrounded by thick woods, which made it difficult to
clear for agriculture; and it was near powerful local natives, Chief Powhatan being the centralized
figure. A possible mistake was not creating a family oriented community with women and children.
It was hard to create a society with only men

Summary Of View Of The Rights Of British America Summary
A summary of View of the Rights of British America Thomas Jefferson discusses the relationship
between England and the United states in the pamphlet " A summary of View of the Rights of
British America". This pamphlet goes on to discuss various situation between these individual
countries .These documents highlight some of the many troubles with the two governments . I
would like to discuss 4 different instances that arise and have a huge impact between these two
states . Jefferson makes some very strong and valid arguments against the tyrannical king of
England King George. The Pamphlet begins with the complaints presented to the King. " complaints
that are excited by many unwarrantable enrichment and usurpation." This statement gives the title of
a usurper to the king of England. This pamphlet on the get go antagonizes the King in my view
point. The united states is asks the king for favors and not rights is a statement showing that the
King does not control the united states and does not have the power to give rights. He the King is
not the no more than only the chief officer of the people. These statements are all from the pamphlet
that are distinguishing the relationship to a point where its becoming clearer that the united states is
not under the palms of the king, yet it is its own entity. Throughout the text we also see the how
Thomas Jefferson accuses England only being interested in the United states , after it was starting to

British America 's Commercial Empire
The nature of British America's commercial empire in the eighteenth century was disclose with
Alexander Falconbridge and Vision of America textbook passages along with the transatlantic slave
trade database. The English Empire was built on cash crop exportation such as tobacco, rice, and
sugar. A colonist in the most important settlements set themselves in plantations. "By the early
eighteenth century, expanding trade with the British Empire increased the number of wealthy
colonists and brought a flood of new luxury goods into affluent American Homes." Obtaining new
luxury goods allowed individual to feel as if they are part of something bigger. Attaining goods such
as new "Refined taste was proof of gentility, a term that became synonymous with the attributes
associated with wealth and sophistication." With the idea of wealth and sophistication, slaves
became in high demand for profits to the new world.
When Africans fell in the hand of black traders, they experience horrific sufferings, they are cuffed,
starved and made them travel long distance without getting hospitalized. Africans were traded in
fairs in which they are traded off again, "their allowance of food is so scanty, that is barely sufficient
to support nature". In Alexander Falconbridge, The African Slave Trade (1788) explains the horrific
situation Negroes are put through. From the beginning at eight 0'clock where they are brought upon

Colonists in America were just British subjects who had decided to start a new beginning in a
different geological area. They transferred to America with their British culture imprinted on them.
This meant they still were very similar to the British because that is where they were from. Most
still had family back home and had an emotional tie. Throughout their arrival in America they faced
many issues. War over the land was a very big issue. They needed help and supplies and the British
supported them and had their backs. When the taxations started most of the colonist probably
understood the reasoning behind it. The British had helped tremendously and they needed ways to

Question: Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by of English
origin, by 1700 the region had evolved into two different societies. Why did this difference in
development occur?
Thesis Statement: When talking about New England and the Chesapeake region, you have to
consider the differences in motives and geography. Consider economic situations (reasons for
settling where they did, reasons why they came to New England in the first place). One has to think
about the family development and demographics, as well as the government structure.

The main crop being produced in this area was tobacco. There was such high demand for tobacco, it
eventually cause the soil to become try old and tired. By the soil drying out it increased the need for
new land. In Document B on the list of emigrant bound for New England, it is mostly family
oriented. Families were coming and units. These people were mostly the Puritans who were coming
to New England for religious purposes. The New England colonies were founded as examples of
pure religion. The New Englanders would come to prosper through their hard work, thrift, and the
quality of their commitment to God and each other. The Christian values of charity towards another
man resulted in tight knit communities that embraced the idea to care for every member. John
Winthrop wrote, A Model of Christian Charity, while he was aboard the Arbella on the Atlantic
Ocean in 1630. In this writing he states that no matter what social class you fall under everyone
must say close together and work in unison as one man. Not as many men working but coming

way before that would occur; these two areas developed into two distinct societies. These

They are treated in a way that benefits their situation. This is what America is all about, having
opportunity even from a rank in the social structure. But a source that contradicts this fact comes
from Captain John Smith, History of Virginia "he writes, "those of us that had money, spare clothes,
credit to give bills of payment, gold rings, fur...were ever welcome to[purchase supplies. The rest of
us patiently obeyed our] vile commanders and [bought] our provisions at fifteen times the values [.]"
(Document F) This is important because it shows that wealthier people are more favored in than
poor people. It is unethical to charge poor people way more than they can afford. It seems that
colonist of the Chesapeake region only wanted wealthier people to trade with so that the colonies
don't have to build their economy from scratch. The colonists are hiking up the prices for poor
people because they feel that poor people are not contributing enough to build the economy. This
shows that New England and Chesapeake colonies developed differently because the less fortunate/
poor people who came to New England colonies benefited more there then they did in the
Chesapeake colonies. Economic differences also led to New England and Chesapeake developing
into two distinct societies. Colonist of different colonies used different sources of labor to get work

The British North America Act Of 1867
The British North America Act of 1867 and the subsequent Indian Act of 1876 gave the Canadian
government, under prime minster John A. Macdonald, full control over the nation's Aboriginal
people. The government used this power to establish boarding schools for Aboriginal children. An
estimated 144 residential schools operated at different times between the late 1800s and 1996
throughout Canada. These schools were established with the purpose to enhance assimilation of
Aboriginal children into the Canadian culture of British and French heritage. However, despite these
misguided government attempts lasting more than a century, the Aboriginal culture and civilization
could not be eradicated, and the residential school system as originally conceived proved to be a
failure.
Residential schools were religious custodial schools established after 1880 by the Canadian
government in partnership with churches. Through next half–century, a system of residential schools
stretching across country developed. The Roman Catholic church ran 3/5 of residential schools, the
Anglican church ¼, and the United and Presbyterian churches controlled the rest. Under the BNA
Act and Indian Acts, the government was responsible for providing Aboriginals with an education as
well as integrating them into Canadian society. Aboriginal leaders also wanted Euro–Canadian
schooling for their children so they could acquire the skills of the society in order to help them

After receiving his PhD from Harvard in 1953, American historian, author, and academic specialist,
Bernard Bailyn, continues to transform ideas of early American history with his award winning
books. As we know, the foundation of today's American Society leads back to the transfer of people
from the Britain to the New World, in the early 1600s. In his book, Bernard Bailyn, author of The

or those who simply wanted to work in factories and make a living. This is the idea the Bailyn
discusses in his third proposition. There were several migrations to America, the two main

British Colonization Of The Americas
British colonization of the Americas began in 1607 in Jamestown, Virginia. It reached its peak when
colonies has established throughout the America. The British ignored america in favor of subduing
and occupying Ireland, which is a promising colony closer to their homeland. In 1558, the half–
century reign of Elizabeth 1 began, England's interest to the other side of the Atlantic grew.
Elizabeth maneuvered through the difficulties of being a female monarch by refusing to marry,
having no kids, and maintaining a reputation for chastity. However, for the next paragraph, I will
initiate on how the British slowly colonized the Americas and how the representation of some of the
women was very important back in this century. First of all, the British which was run by Elizabeth
1 in the 1500s established her country's control of the seas and access to the New World's wealth. Sir
Walter Ralegh, who is one of Elizabeth's "favorite" men has granted dominion over the large,
undefined American territory north of the Spanish lands that Ralegh names Virginia to honor not the
Virgin Mary but the Virgin Queen. Even though Elizabeth did not get married she has a "favorite"
men which she trusted him and sent him to the America. In contrast to the highly Spanish queen,
Elizabeth was a thoroughly worldly monarch (pg24). She abjured the Catholic Church in favor of
heading the church of England, more as a source of political than spiritual identity and authority.

The Labor Of War And Early British America
Nick Groos Professor O 'Shea AMH 2010 U.S. History 18 September 2015 The Labor of War In
early British America they had a unique form of labor where they would use indentured servants and
natives as workers instead of slaves. However in 1619 the first 20 Africans were brought to
Jamestown by the Dutch to be used as slaves. Black labor remained small until the1670s when it
started to grow in the southern region of Carolina. In 1612 John Rolfe a Jamestown planter began to
experiment with tobacco that the local Indians had been growing for years (Brinkley 37). He
produced high quality tobacco crops and sold them to buyers in England. The problem with farming
tobacco was that it required a lot of land and the tobacco would exhaust the soil after only a few
years so these farmers would need more land and there wasn't enough land for them. These farmers
originally used white indentured servants on their farms to grow tobacco until 1619 when the Dutch
brought over the first 20 African Americans (Brinkley 38). The future of these first African
Americans in the English colonies remained unknown. It is thought that the colonist didn't consider
them slaves and thought they were the same as the European indentured servants who were being
used. They would be held for a number of years and then freed like the European indentured
servants that were currently being used. For the time however planters continued to prefer the use of

The New World
After settlement of "The New World" by the English in the early 17th century, there was a surge of
Englishmen hoping to strike rich, escape the religious government of England, or start a new life
with their family. Specific reasons for leaving England had its respective colonies to travel to. For
this reason, the northern New England colonies and the southern colonies like Virginia and
Maryland in the Chesapeake bay area started to establish ways of life that began to develop very
different lifestyles. The reasoning behind the foundation of each colony is what created such a
substantial amount of difference between two areas of English settlement.
Following the defeat of the Spanish armada, England finally had the power to venture out to the
Americas after hearing about a century's worth of Spanish success in that region themselves. Single
Englishmen in search of wealth began to sail to America, and did not find the gold they were
searching for. It was not until the success from the crop tobacco, did anyone in Virginia prosper.
This set the stage for a huge colony with an economy relying on large plantations of this new staple
crop. The many who sought out the Massachusetts bay colony in New England were likely not
going to strike rich on a plantation, but to either escape the English Church, or to start a new life for
their family. The Massachusetts bay colony was founded by Puritans who wanted to fix, or purify,
the English church and for this reason, were also very

But how humor is used in the present situation of English teaching in senior high schools?
II. The Present Situation of English Teaching in Senior High Schools In the 20th century, numerous
English teaching methods had emerged; however, all of them, the most popular one about 1980s,
have not reached a satisfying result. Thus, from 1990s, the main idea of English teaching does not
consider "method" as an important aspect of English teaching. Because the methods ignore the fact
that the learning process is conceived in the interactive activity with other people, and the English
teaching environments such as culture, politics are also ignored. Under this main tendency the
English curriculum standard was formulated by our national education department, English teaching
takes a social constructivism as its theoretical foundation. This English teaching method classifies
the different positions of teachers and students in the classroom. It points out the teacher is no longer
the focus in the classroom and the role of teacher is transformed from a knowledge provider to a
students' helper and instructor. And these standards need the special language use by teachers,
namely, the humor. There are some characters of the traditional English teaching system. The first,
teachers try their best to make any possible way to improve students' marks. Some of the teachers

Essay On How Did The British Colonization Of North America
"The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese." Of the three major colonizers
who vied for control of North America from the 15th to 17th centuries, it was the early–bird Spanish
who got the worm, but after all was said and done, it was England who got the more desirable
cheese. After 1763, the English had control of all land east of the Mississippi river and virtually all
of present–day Canada. The English were able to gain the upper hand in the conflict for control of
North America not only because of military victories, but also because of good timing. The English

With the Spanish out of the picture and Portugal busy with their own colonies in South America, the
time was right for England to grab their slice of the North American pie. The English victory over
Spain in 1588 sparked an English renaissance in taking to the sea. People became interested in
sailing, also because of the amazing treasures the newly knighted Sir Francis Drake was reaping in
from the West Indies. England had the financial capabilities to colonize, but they now needed
manpower to live in and maintain those colonies. And lucky for England, their timing was just right.
Britain's feudal system had created a large gap between their upper and lower classes. The members
of the lower class were looking to move up on the food chain by whatever means necessary. At that
time, the amount of land you owned signified your power, but in England, there was less available
land and a growing lower class. If the lower class couldn't find land to own in England, then they
would have to search elsewhere. At that time, there happened to be an entire continent of land

How Did Religion Affect British North America
Due to their dedication to religion, members of communities in British North America were
expected to attend religious ceremonies throughout each day. The amount of effort placed into their
particular religion reflects the importance it held over the colonists and their societies. Although
many factors affected British North America, religion impacted the colonies through its initial
formation and political elements. As religion proved indispensable throughout history, it was
especially decisive in the initial development of the British colonies. Religious groups, such as the
Pilgrims and Quakers, fled England due to the lack of religious toleration. Although spiritual
freedom was the objective, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania were the only

Economic Causes Of British Settlement In North America Essay
Although England's religious turmoil played a role in the development of British settlements,
England's economic problems fueled much of the settling of British North America. England's
economic situation caused many settlers to come for economic success rather than religious
freedoms. Colonists fled to Massachusetts Bay not only to escape religious persecution but also
economic decline. Settlers sent by the Virginia Company were attracted by the promises and
opportunities to live a better life. Economics soon became the underlying reason for colonization in
North America.
Economic concerns of England caused the colonization of British North America. From 1550 to
1600, England's population rose from 3 million to 4 million. Due to the high population, landlords
began enclosing croplands, causing many small farmers to become landless. High unemployment
rates along with a desire for adventure and religious freedom presented a solution to solve economic
problems and restore England to its glory. Their belief in mercantilism caused them to search for
new land to grow products and supply their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Queen Elizabeth made Protestantism the official religion of England. Non–followers of the
Protestant religion were often abused and persecuted. Religious groups such as the Puritans were
exception. Although Puritans wanted religious freedom, they also wanted to escape the decline of
England's economy . Many of the woolen districts that were enclosed were the areas where
Puritanism was the strongest. Many Puritans were kicked off of the land and forced into the crowded
streets of London. The Puritans migrated to North America in search of a place where they could
freely practice their religion. They settled in Plymouth colony which merged with Massachusetts
Bay in 1691. Along with religion, Massachusetts Bay relied on economic trade to survive. They
prospered in fur trading, fishing, and

Primary Factors Shaping The Development Of The British...
Any historian can easily give you a list of the many different factors that shaped the development of
the British colonies in North America but there is only one primary factor that shaped it. This
primary factor is religion making the statement that "geography was the primary factor in shaping
the development of the British Colonies in North America" invalid. These British Colonies would
not have been as successful if they weren't religiously motivated and religiously tolerant. Religion
was the drive and reason to why they migrated to North America and the basis for the majority of
the British colonies. Some may argue that religion cannot be the primary factor because it was itself
affected by geography but that does not matter. These people forget that if it wasn't for the colonists'
strong religious beliefs they wouldn't have colonized to America. This makes religion very
important because it was the drive that led them to America and once they got there of course they
were affected by geography but wouldn't have been so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Maryland was made for refuge for English Catholics and Pennsylvania was for Puritans that were
looking for a home of their own so they can have religious freedom and their own distinctive social
order. Along with this those who came for religious reasons were more successful overall because
they came looking for a place where they can live a religious life and not for gold. They ended up
succeeding further because colonies like Jamestown when they came they focused too much on
finding gold and less on forming a foundation that they ended up unprepared, starving (for instance
the starving times) and in desperate need of help. Although they were able to make tobacco and
succeed later on they still were never able to stay stable economically or

Compare And Contrast New England And Chesapeake Colonies
During the mid 17th century two regions carved roots for England in North America. Coming from
the same homeland one would assume their inner workings would closely mirror each other but this
was not the case for the New England and Chesapeake colonies. Though faced with similar
hardships, the ways they handled the difficulties starkly contrast one another.
Both New England and Chesapeake suffered from religious tensions, both holding some settlers
wishing to flee England in order to practice their religion without persecution and hoping for a better
life across seas. In one instance, Chesapeake's Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore, a catholic
Englishman hoping to create a safe haven for catholic settlers to worship. However Baltimore stayed
in England and the majority of the settlers who came to the area were protestant. This caused strife
over the only church eventually leading to the pro religion–tolerance governor to be thrown in jail
and three catholic leaders to be hung.
Unlike Chesapeake, the New England colonies were founded by a strict puritan named John
Winthrop who stayed in the New England region. These colonies faced a few rebellions by two
different activists with different ideas, causing waves throughout the community. One, a man by the
name of Roger Williams believed in separating church and state to keep religion pure. The second, a
woman by the name of Anne Hutchinson refuted the validity of some of the ministers. In a less gory
fashion, both were

British Colonies In North America Analysis
The document I found was "A Proposition for the Present Peace and Future Government of the
British Colonies in North America", published in 1775. This proposition was written by a man in
London and meant to be distributed among the citizens of Britain. The writer's hope was if the
document was well received by the public it would be more favorably received by the government.
The proposition first explains the situation in America, and the hostility the colonists feel towards
the British government. The writer feels that the hostility is growing and it could lead to an all out
war if something is not done. His suggestion is to increase the number of British troops in the
colonies to stamp out the protests of the colonists. It is the

The Pros And Cons Of British Colonization In America
After the French and Indian War, Britain fell into great debt due to the costs of the war. Thus, in
order to solve their financial issues, Britain imposed taxes on the colonists, such as the Stamp Act,
Townshend Act, and the Tea Act. However, the colonists were appalled by these taxes as they felt
that they were not responsible for the debt nor the war, therefore, claiming that the British did not
have the right to tax them. As a response to these new policies, the colonists held various rebellions,
including the Boston Tea Party. However, despite being taxed by the British without representation,
the British policies in the colonies were completely justified as the colonists in America were still
part of the British empire, and were entirely responsible for the financial crisis in Britain. Upon
discovery of the New World, many countries began colonizing the land, and Britain's main goal in
America was to start colonization, and expand their empire into the new world–not to send off their
people away for good. Thus, despite being a different continent from England, the British colonies
in America were still part of the British empire. If America were to be excluded from these policies,
then the rest of Britain's colonies would have to be excluded as well–dwindling Britain's title as a
world power. During the beginning of colonization in America, the British colonists occupied most
of the east coast and looked to expanding more westward, into French territory, causing the

New England Vs Chesapeake Colonies
A World Apart Why did the New England and Chesapeake colonies differ so much? Although both
these colonies where inhabited by people of English origin the similarities ended there. Such factors
as motive of settlement, the settlers themselves and even geography of settlement all shaped these
colonies into two very distinctive societies. The settlers who first landed in Jamestown had very
different aspirations than the puritans who landed later in the New England area. Although both saw
the new world as a land of opportunity their definition of this opportunity was very different. "Early
Virginians at Jamestown hoped to find gold, they and the settlers in Maryland quickly discovered
that growing tobacco was the only sure means of making money" (Corbett 73). These early settlers
may have been let down by the lack of gold in the Chesapeake area however their motives remained
the same. Britain at the time was becoming increasingly overcrowded and many people saw the
New world as a land of opportunity. They not only sought jobs, but also had high hopes of scoring in
big quickly without any intentions of staying. This would lead to many repercussions for the settlers
when they found out that scoring it big in the new world wasn't a possibly. They were unprepared
for saying and this meant such things as growing crops and pulling in the harvest were not on the
highest part of their agenda. The British companies that funded these

Differences between British Colonies in America Essay
One might think that all of the British colonies in the new world were all the same. This is not the
case though. The colonies, although they were all British they had some similarities but mainly they
had differences. The Southern, New England and Middle colonies clearly show theses similarities
and differences, particularly in terms of land, labor, religion, and native relations. The colonies of
the south and the New England had one similarity; there relationship with the natives. Both of the
colonies had very bad relations with the natives. The south needed the native land for tobacco
plantations, which caused a lot of conflict between the two groups. The conflict escalated to the
point where the southerners gave the natives blankets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The New England colonies didn't rely on land to make money because they had a diverse economy
and also tobacco and other cash crops needed a specific climate to be grown in. Although no one
became as wealthy as those in the south, they had a very constant economy. They didn't have to rely
on one crop instead they were able to rely on rum, fur trade, fishing, trade, logging and shipbuilding.
The next difference is religion. The south had religion but it wasn't as big of a deal as the New
England colonies. This was because the south spent most of the time farming that although they did
have church agriculture was more significant. The New England colonies, especially Massachusetts,
had a very strict religious system. Failure to follow this system could result in death or banishment.
The last difference between them is the labor. In the south they needed a lot of slaves because crops
like tobacco required constant attention like making sure it was healthy and also doing a lot of
watching over those plants to make sure they were being grown properly. The south was also a slave
society in that in order for it to be successful they would need a lot of slaves. On the other hand the
New England colonies didn't need slaves because the crops that they used didn't need the attention
that cash crops needed. Another reason is because they

Role Of Slavery In British North America

religion to religion, continent to continent and from people to people. Killing millions of innocent
people. King Philip's war between Indians and the New England, where Indians fought for their land
against the intruders. Resulted in devastating amount of people dying from both ends and, "Indian
villages were destroyed, and captives, including men, women, and children, were killed or sold into
slavery [...] (Foner 89)." Brutality and having the control over people especially are injustice and
immorally wrongful to humanity, bringing hostility, resentment and conflicts among peoples.

started as similar colonies but developed into different societies. The New England and Chesapeake

This became their main source of income in the Chesapeake colonies. This would eventually merge
the Chesapeake colonies with the Southern colonies in Plantation lifestyle, unlike the fur and trade
economics of the New England colonies. Their different economics also affected their social
development.
Both the Chesapeake colonies and the New England colonies had different social structure and
development. Because the colony was founded for gold the Chesapeake colony was primarily men
that could work. (Doc C.)The colonists of the Chesapeake even had to sign oaths of allegiances to
the Church of England. (Doc C.) The colony was under the rule of England and was to help support
England finically. When they arrived they even sign their own contracts such as the Articles of
Agreement, Springfield, Massachusetts, 1636. (Doc D.) This caused England to have a foothold in
their colonies, and then under them were Clergy, free white men, the few women, servants, and
slaves. The Chesapeake colonies had servants and slaves, servants could work their way of servant
hood, for example they might work seven years and then become free. The Chesapeake colony also
had slaves because its economy was based on cash crop plantations, most of these slaves came from
Africa and was the beginning of the Slave Trade. These types of people were primarily dominant in
this colony because it was founded as a working colony and had no need for families, just men that
could work. This was very

By the 1700's, New England, the Chesapeake region and the Southern Colonies developed into three
distinct societies, despite coming from the same mother country, England. The regions of Colonial
America each had a distinctive culture and economy entirely different from the other regions.
Religion and religious tolerance was completely different in each region, running from being free to
complete persecution. Ethnicity and racial composition ranged from almost complete British descent
to a wide range of composition. Each region was politically and economically structured different
and had its own identity. Each developed differently based on immigration trends, geography and
other features. Throughout the colonization of Colonial America, ... Show more content on

These colonists were motivated by greed and saw a better opportunity to become rich. Therefore the
settlers came over from England. A Virginia ship list in 1625 reports the number of people to be
transported to Virginia (Doc C). In comparison to New England, there were very few women or
families. Most of the people were men of about 20–30 years of age. The ratios and ages suggest that
these people were looking to make money over starting families. The Chesapeake colonies were
mostly funded by England. The Governor of Virginia, William Berkeley, asked the King of England
to help out (Doc G). These colonies maintained fairly close relations with England. They considered
themselves part of and under England, and still owed allegiance to England. The Chesapeake region
had a colonial assembly. These were mostly local people of the colony. There was also a governor
who was appointed by the King of England. The local people of the colony – the colonial assembly–
and the English appointed governor shared political power over the region. The House of Burgesses
was established in 1619 and was the first representative government in the New World. Similar to
the Chesapeake region, the Southern colonies were founded by the upper class and gentry of
England. The reason for this was that there were vast areas of land available that were valuable for
farming. The Carolinas were

New England Vs Chesapeake Colonies
Although both the New England and the Chesapeake region colonies, which were located in
Maryland, Virginia. Had been settled and ruled by the English, in the year 1700 the colonies had
evolved into two very separate distinct societies. The first major cause of this differentiation lays in
the very first reasons in which the founding of the two region's colonies were originally discussed
and planned. For example in 1607 the London Company of Virginia, which is a joint–stock
company, had been formed to settle in the Virginia area colony full of Englishmen. However the
Company wanted this colony solely for economic gain for the mother country itself. As the
(Document F), Captain Smith's history of Virginia, shows the first colonists spent a majority of their
time searching for gold like the in Spanish windfall instead of planting crops. As a result, half of the
colony died of starvation and malnutrition. Only Capt. Smith's assumption of dictatorial power and
his use of draconian measures prevented the colony from collapsing completely, which was the
saving grace. In contrast to the mercenary nature of Virginia, New England was founded out of
altruistic and religious reasons. The Separatists, and later the Puritans who arrived in 1630, came
primarily so that they might practice their religion as they wished, free of royal interference. As John
Winthrop wrote, the settlers saw their colony as a noble experiment, a "city upon a hill" which was

Comparing the New England and Chesapeake Regions Essay
Comparing the New England and Chesapeake Regions
The New England colonies were formed by Protestants who were escaping England. They 'planned'
their society. When they came over they brought entire families, not just random people. The
Chesapeake region colonies were formed by whoever signed up. The reasons that resulted in the
differences between the New England and the Chesapeake colonies were political, social, and
economic.
The political reasons for the differences were that in New England there was a basic plan. In
document D I found that after a group of people grows to forty families it is then considered a town.
This document also tells that everyone got some land. Document E adds some more pieces to the
puzzle by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would make the people behave quite nicely. In document B I am told that entire families were
brought over from England. This would make it quite a bit easier to get communities growing. Also,
under document D they intended, with all haste, to find a minister. This would give the community a
sense of continuity, and would make the people behave quite a bit more. Now on to the Chesapeake
region. Under document C random people, whoever signed up, were brought over, and not many of
them were female. This lead to many problems, because the people didn't want to work. This deal,
however, was good for the females, because they got an extremely large, at least for this time,
amount of freedom. In document F it is stated that there is unrest among the people. Some of them
even tried to steal some supplies and the ship and go home. Document G talks about how no one
wanted to do anything, even defend their place.
Now for the economic reasons. The Chesapeake region developed a tobacco economy, everything
they did was to grow or sell tobacco. Document H states that the poor were unhappy. In a society the
poor are sometimes unhappy, but in this case the rich did nothing to make the poor feel any better. In
New England the economy was not extremely important, but the average person here was wealthier
than the average person in England.
The New England and Chesapeake regions were vastly different, even though they were settled by
the same country.

How Did The British Win The Battle Of America
Despite American victories at Fort Ticonderoga and Saratoga, they weren't as lucky in Brooklyn,
NY. After losing multiple crucial battles upstate, the British were determined to hold on to their
control of New York City. The British launched a major offensive to rid the city of the Americans
originating from Long Island. The Americans and British met at the Battle of Long Island, also
known as the Battle of Brooklyn. The British attacked the Americans who were positioned among
the multiple heights of Brooklyn: Flatbush Pass, Gowanus Heights, and Brooklyn Heights. This
position established the protection of American artillery that commanded New York City. But, these

The Americans were ill equipped for the battle carrying muskets left over from King George's War
(1744–45) and Queen Anne's War (1702–1713) that were taken from New England and were made
up of 19,000 poorly trained militia and volunteers (Schechter 143). This inexperienced American
force, despite commanded by the great General Washington, left a wide open flank, which Howe
easily took advantage of unfortunately. He discovered an undefended flank through the Jamaica Pass
and took advantage of it ravaging the American defenses from the side. The sheer numbers of
British forces and weapons outflanking them, which was nearly twice the size of the U.S. forces
there, overwhelmed Washington and his men forcing them to retreat to New Jersey. The Battle of
Brooklyn was a demoralizing defeat for the Americans as Washington would never be able to
recover New York City from the British. It was the largest (in terms of numbers) battle of the entire
American Revolution and saw the most Hessian involvement with three full regiments (Soleki).
And, it was also the first battle fought by the newly formed United States

the Marathas lost the war to the Bombay presidency and when the British captured Seringapatam.
With the victory at hand, Great Britain was able to utilize India to produce raw cotton and an export
market for the British textile industry. The industrial revolution in Great Britain helped manufacture
those resources coming from India more quickly which helped reversed their trade with China. In
1828 the Chinese market increased its demand for opium grown

British American And Spanish America
British American and Spanish America were both a result of European exploration. Starting with
Spain in the 15th and 16th century, European countries began traveling to America to claim lands
and grow their mother country's wealth and power. Spanish people came over to for wealth and
economic gain, while the British came for wealth, but also as an escape from persecution. When
settled, Spanish America functioned as a decentralized monarchy, with representatives of the
Spanish King in each colony. In British America, each group of colonies was governed by one of
three systems: Royal, Charter, and Proprietary. Both countries engaged in slavery and the
exploitation of natives and Africans to work on plantations and mines to produce goods to send back
to the mother country. England did include their colonies in the trans–atlantic trade system,
however, Spain restricted trade from their colonies to minimize the power the colonies had. Both of
these strategies helped maintain power in the mother countries because England was gaining wealth
from its colonies resources, and Spain kept a strong hold on its colonies by keeping them
economically weaker. The original cause of English immigration to the New World was for profit
from from the lands of America. Soon after however, people left to escape persecution as they
headed to the new land of opportunity. English Immigration to America in the 1600s started with the
arrival of the colonists at Jamestown. The immigrants were Baptist

British Colonization Of Early America

  • 1. British Colonization Of Early America The United States has come a long way from British colonization. It is without a doubt that today it holds the tittle of one of the world's most progressive super–power nation. Its extensive history from colonial settlement to sovereignty is due to its many highs lows of political social and economic changes. The United States' history has made a significant impact on the nation that they are today; through the lens of political economical and social aspects we can underline major events of American history that makes it "the land of the free" that it is present day. The young United States of America, as we know it today was once the thirteen colonies under British rule. During the colonial era there were a number of people (British) who ... • 3. New England Colonies Dbq Analysis Today's world portrays countries that each have distinct characteristics religiously as well as economically. In the British colonies before 1700, the colonies could be dispersed into two distinct regions, the Chesapeake colonies, and New England colonies. Both areas varied in religion and economy, and thrived in different ways. For the New England colonies, the offering of religious freedom and an end to persecution in England caused many Puritans to sail to New England. However, the main motivation for people going to the Chesapeake colonies was to get rich fast, as well as other economic goals. All in all, the distinct traits of different regions of the continental British colonies caused the creation of two very distinct territories. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For colonists of New England, religion was undoubtedly the most important factor for migrating to the New World. The promise of no persecution of Puritans caused Puritans to flock to the New World quickly, and to do so with their entire family. Chesapeake colonies were settled largely by young, white males seeking to become wealthy in the New World through farming. However, land was given away by how many people one had in their family, as well as how many slaves the person brought over, so the wealthy still received the most land. All in all, the distinct differences of these two regions created two places that seemed to have characteristics so contrasting that they could be different countries, even though they were united through their British heritage and ... • 5. British Colonies In America As the British colonies in the Americas were growing and expanding, Britain attempted to keep the colonies under their control using several different techniques. However these techniques backfired and ultimately failed, causing the new British colonies to fight for their own independence from Great Britain. The main methods Britain used in order to maintain and increase control over the colonies were taxation, mercantilism, and the growing power of parliament. Britain imposed numerous taxes on the colonies because they believed that only a taxation system developed and administered by London would suffice. Many of the of the colonial governments were reluctant to tax their own colonies forcing Britain to impose the taxes themselves, after ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Impact Of The British Revolution In Colonial America Following the French and Indian War, Great Britain began to tighten control over the American colonies. Britain constricted the rights of the colonists by enacting numerous pieces of legislation. Some of these acts attempted to tax the colonists on products such as stamps, tea, and currency. After which, what legislature was passed by the British Parliament, resistance from the American colonists grew due to these policies of legislation. Changes in British policy in the 1770s, led to a revolution in colonial America evident in political, economic, and social issues. The Revolutionary War was caused by the British Parliament, one is because of the political issues. For example, on January 14, 1776, George Greenville explained that Britain had the supreme legislative power over America (Document 1). According to Greenville, Britain had this supreme legislative power because Parliament had provided the colonists with much of their needs (Document 1). Greenville continued that this was why British Parliament believed they had the power to impose taxes on the American colonies (Document 1). As a member of British Parliament, Greenville believed that America should obey Britain because of the protection the British provide to the colonies (Document 1). Some of the protection the British provided was military protection from the Indians (Document 1). Greenville's statement proved that Britain believed they were politically superior of the American colonists. George Washington, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It happened when the American tone and image of Rock–N–Roll and Blues became popular with the younger british population. British groups started to mix styles with american and british. The first british band to make an impact on what americans were listening to was the Tornados instrumental Telstar which hit number one on the u.s hot 100. That is when the British invasion really started to affect America. The craze started to really pick up when the beatles were introduced in october 29, 1963. • 11. The Colonization Of The New World The colonization of the New World by the English began after Queen Elizabeth passed in 1603. This is when King James I signed a treaty with Spain ending decades of warfare after succeeding to the throne and needing new sources of income, the British decided to act on what they had previously ignored for a variety of reasons. The first colonies formed into two distinct regions, the Chesapeake and New England. Although both regions were colonized by persons of English descent, they contrasted politically, economically, and socially but had similarities as well. Their reasons for colonization, the location of their settlements, and their intrinsic beliefs determined their differences and similarities. In 1607, the Virginia Company of London sponsored a group of one hundred settlers, mainly well to do adventurers, that established the first English colony on the Chesapeake Bay, Jamestown, currently the state of Virginia. They came with the intent of finding gold and getting rich by trading with the Indians. But as a result of their eagerness for money, they failed to put enough thought into the location they chose to settle which ended up being a swamp. This environmental condition started the colony off to a negative start, with the colonists suffered high mortality rates early on due to disease and famine. John Rolfe, a farmer and scientist, introduced a new tough strain of tobacco and it became perhaps the most important reason for Virginia's survival. It certainly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With the defeat of the Spanish armada in 1588, Spain began a steady decline to a second rate power. Consequently shifting their original goal of exploring to maintaining or colonizing what lands they still possess. Spain's goal of spreading Catholicism was undoubtable strengthened when the Pope sanctioned all Spanish efforts. Thus, slavery of Native Americans was justified, and would liberate them in the eyes of God. In effort to prevent British protestant influence, Spain declared that Non–Spanish citizens and Non–Spanish Christians were not permitted to settle in their borders. During this time period a nation's wealth and power can be measured by the amount of land in which they possess. For example, Spain controlled a vast empire that stretched from modern California to Peru . The Spanish Empire was so vast that it had rivaled that of Ancient Rome. Although unlike the British and French, Spain established an empire of towns, and modern day Mexico City served as the center of Spanish control. Along with establishing the first university in the new world, Spain also established St. Augustine and Santa Fe as response to the British and French expansion efforts. British Imperial Goals: With the inspiration of Christopher Columbus, Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the world for a second time in 1580. • 15. British Definition Of Freedom In Early America 1. Early Great Britain's influence on the New World gave way for developing colonies. Being supportive of laws, the British passed on their methods of freedom to the Americas. The British believed that a crucial part of freedom was to obey a specific structure of laws, to be free was to be under government rule. Therefore, "British freedom celebrated the rule of the law, the right to live under legislation". Furthermore, religion, specifically Christianity, also played an important role in the birth of America's definition of freedom. Looking at freedom through a religious lens " The Puritan settlers of colonial Massachusetts...believed their colony the embodiment of true Christianty, planted this spiritual definition of freedom on American soil". The American definition of freedom was inspired by both these interpretations, the Puritan and the British. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Freedom in America and property went hand and hand; without the ownership of property, indivduals were not granted the privilege of living freely. The security of property was recognized as a foundation of freedom in early America. This was so because without property one was viewed poorly, "those who did not control their own lives ought to not have a voice in governing the state. Political freedom required economic independence". Therefore, freedom was not awarded to those without control of land and subsequently, control over their own lives. Furthermore, the connection between personal liberty and private property ownership paralleled that of the relationship between land control and complete freedom. Personal freedom is defined as, "the ability to make crucial individual choices free from outside coercion". But without land, people were already viewed as incompetent for individuality, so it would be impossible for one to achieve personal freedom. This does in fact make owning land a prerequisite for personal freedom. In conclusion, there is a direct relationship between land ownership and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The British Empire During Colonial America The British Empire in Colonial America The colonization of Virginia, Maryland and the Massachusetts Bay corresponds to pivotal points in history that began the formation of our modern day United States of America. In all three of these regions the process of transplantation developed because of the hunger of finding the Northwest Passage and ultimately the search for a get rich– quick–scheme, gold. Besides their initial intentions, other common factors were the shortages of financial resources and the need for continuous investment from London. Virginia After receiving a charter from James I, the London Company sailed to the Americas with almost 150 men aboard the Godspeed, the Discovery, and the Susan Constant. Voyages during those times were treacherous, hence the survival of only a little more than two–thirds of the original crew and passengers when they made landfall in 1607. While entering the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, they went up the river which they called the James. They decided to establish a colony on a peninsula they called Jamestown. It was a poor site location; it was low and swampy; hot and humid in the summer, which caused outbreaks of malaria; they were surrounded by thick woods, which made it difficult to clear for agriculture; and it was near powerful local natives, Chief Powhatan being the centralized figure. A possible mistake was not creating a family oriented community with women and children. It was hard to create a society with only men ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Summary Of View Of The Rights Of British America Summary A summary of View of the Rights of British America Thomas Jefferson discusses the relationship between England and the United states in the pamphlet " A summary of View of the Rights of British America". This pamphlet goes on to discuss various situation between these individual countries .These documents highlight some of the many troubles with the two governments . I would like to discuss 4 different instances that arise and have a huge impact between these two states . Jefferson makes some very strong and valid arguments against the tyrannical king of England King George. The Pamphlet begins with the complaints presented to the King. " complaints that are excited by many unwarrantable enrichment and usurpation." This statement gives the title of a usurper to the king of England. This pamphlet on the get go antagonizes the King in my view point. The united states is asks the king for favors and not rights is a statement showing that the King does not control the united states and does not have the power to give rights. He the King is not the no more than only the chief officer of the people. These statements are all from the pamphlet that are distinguishing the relationship to a point where its becoming clearer that the united states is not under the palms of the king, yet it is its own entity. British America 's Commercial Empire The nature of British America's commercial empire in the eighteenth century was disclose with Alexander Falconbridge and Vision of America textbook passages along with the transatlantic slave trade database. The English Empire was built on cash crop exportation such as tobacco, rice, and sugar. A colonist in the most important settlements set themselves in plantations. They transferred to America with their British culture imprinted on them. This meant they still were very similar to the British because that is where they were from. Most still had family back home and had an emotional tie. Throughout their arrival in America they faced many issues. War over the land was a very big issue. They needed help and supplies and the British supported them and had their backs. When the taxations started most of the colonist probably understood the reasoning behind it. Why did this difference in development occur? Thesis Statement: When talking about New England and the Chesapeake region, you have to consider the differences in motives and geography. Consider economic situations (reasons for settling where they did, reasons why they came to New England in the first place). One has to think about the family development and demographics, as well as the government structure. Thought New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled with a majority of English origin. The New Englanders would come to prosper through their hard work, thrift, and the quality of their commitment to God and each other. The Christian values of charity towards another man resulted in tight knit communities that embraced the idea to care for every member. England in particular sent out a number of groups to the east coast of the New World to two regions. These areas were the New England and the Chesapeake regions. Later in the late 1700s, these two regions would go though many conflicts to come together as one nation. Yet, way before that would occur; these two areas developed into two distinct societies. It is unethical to charge poor people way more than they can afford. It seems that colonist of the Chesapeake region only wanted wealthier people to trade with so that the colonies don't have to build their economy from scratch. The colonists are hiking up the prices for poor people because they feel that poor people are not contributing enough to build the economy. This shows that New England and Chesapeake colonies developed differently because the less fortunate/ poor people who came to New England colonies benefited more there then they did in the Chesapeake colonies. Macdonald, full control over the nation's Aboriginal people. The government used this power to establish boarding schools for Aboriginal children. An estimated 144 residential schools operated at different times between the late 1800s and 1996 throughout Canada. These schools were established with the purpose to enhance assimilation of Aboriginal children into the Canadian culture of British and French heritage. However, despite these misguided government attempts lasting more than a century, the Aboriginal culture and civilization could not be eradicated, and the residential school system as originally conceived proved to be a failure. Residential schools were religious custodial schools established after 1880 by the Canadian government in partnership with churches. Through next half–century, a system of residential schools stretching across country developed. The Roman Catholic church ran 3/5 of residential schools, the Anglican church ¼, and the United and Presbyterian churches controlled the rest. Under the BNA Act and Indian Acts, the government was responsible for providing Aboriginals with an education as well as integrating them into Canadian society. Aboriginal leaders also wanted Euro–Canadian schooling for their children so they could acquire the skills of the society in order to help them transition into a world led by ... Summary Of The Peopling Of British North America After receiving his PhD from Harvard in 1953, American historian, author, and academic specialist, Bernard Bailyn, continues to transform ideas of early American history with his award winning books. As we know, the foundation of today's American Society leads back to the transfer of people from the Britain to the New World, in the early 1600s. In his book, Bernard Bailyn, author of The Peopling of British North America, An Introduction, gathers demographic, social, and economic history research to form four propositions relating to the migration. While identifying central themes of our history, he attempts to present an overview for American knowledge relating to the causes of migration to the new world and consequences of society created ... For others it was the accruing of land, or a "get out of jail card" for those in debtors' prison. In the late 1800s migration to America can be traced to the potato blight in Ireland, or those who simply wanted to work in factories and make a living. This is the idea the Bailyn discusses in his third proposition. There were several migrations to America, the two main concerning land and the work force, but each one separately calls on different social and economic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. British Colonization Of The Americas British colonization of the Americas began in 1607 in Jamestown, Virginia. It reached its peak when colonies has established throughout the America. The British ignored america in favor of subduing and occupying Ireland, which is a promising colony closer to their homeland. In 1558, the half– century reign of Elizabeth 1 began, England's interest to the other side of the Atlantic grew. Elizabeth maneuvered through the difficulties of being a female monarch by refusing to marry, having no kids, and maintaining a reputation for chastity. However, for the next paragraph, I will initiate on how the British slowly colonized the Americas and how the representation of some of the women was very important back in this century. First of all, the British which was run by Elizabeth 1 in the 1500s established her country's control of the seas and access to the New World's wealth. Sir Walter Ralegh, who is one of Elizabeth's "favorite" men has granted dominion over the large, undefined American territory north of the Spanish lands that Ralegh names Virginia to honor not the Virgin Mary but the Virgin Queen. Even though Elizabeth did not get married she has a "favorite" men which she trusted him and sent him to the America. In contrast to the highly Spanish queen, Elizabeth was a thoroughly worldly monarch (pg24). She abjured the Catholic Church in favor of heading the church of England, more as a source of political than spiritual identity and authority. Differently from the Catholic ... • 37. The Labor Of War And Early British America Nick Groos Professor O 'Shea AMH 2010 U.S. History 18 September 2015 The Labor of War In early British America they had a unique form of labor where they would use indentured servants and natives as workers instead of slaves. However in 1619 the first 20 Africans were brought to Jamestown by the Dutch to be used as slaves. Black labor remained small until the1670s when it started to grow in the southern region of Carolina. In 1612 John Rolfe a Jamestown planter began to experiment with tobacco that the local Indians had been growing for years (Brinkley 37). He produced high quality tobacco crops and sold them to buyers in England. The problem with farming tobacco was that it required a lot of land and the tobacco would exhaust the soil after only a few years so these farmers would need more land and there wasn't enough land for them. These farmers originally used white indentured servants on their farms to grow tobacco until 1619 when the Dutch brought over the first 20 African Americans (Brinkley 38). The future of these first African Americans in the English colonies remained unknown. It is thought that the colonist didn't consider them slaves and thought they were the same as the European indentured servants who were being used. They would be held for a number of years and then freed like the European indentured servants that were currently being used. For the time however planters continued to prefer the use of European indentured servants and the use of black labor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. The New World After settlement of "The New World" by the English in the early 17th century, there was a surge of Englishmen hoping to strike rich, escape the religious government of England, or start a new life with their family. Specific reasons for leaving England had its respective colonies to travel to. For this reason, the northern New England colonies and the southern colonies like Virginia and Maryland in the Chesapeake bay area started to establish ways of life that began to develop very different lifestyles. The reasoning behind the foundation of each colony is what created such a substantial amount of difference between two areas of English settlement. Following the defeat of the Spanish armada, England finally had the power to venture out to the Americas after hearing about a century's worth of Spanish success in that region themselves. Single Englishmen in search of wealth began to sail to America, and did not find the gold they were searching for. It was not until the success from the crop tobacco, did anyone in Virginia prosper. This set the stage for a huge colony with an economy relying on large plantations of this new staple crop. The many who sought out the Massachusetts bay colony in New England were likely not going to strike rich on a plantation, but to either escape the English Church, or to start a new life for their family. The Massachusetts bay colony was founded by Puritans who wanted to fix, or purify, the English church and for this reason, were also very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Present Situation of English Teaching in Senior High Schools In the 20th century, numerous English teaching methods had emerged; however, all of them, the most popular one about 1980s, have not reached a satisfying result. Thus, from 1990s, the main idea of English teaching does not consider "method" as an important aspect of English teaching. Because the methods ignore the fact that the learning process is conceived in the interactive activity with other people, and the English teaching environments such as culture, politics are also ignored. Under this main tendency the English curriculum standard was formulated by our national education department, English teaching takes a social constructivism as its theoretical foundation. This English teaching method classifies the different positions of teachers and students in the classroom. It points out the teacher is no longer the focus in the classroom and the role of teacher is transformed from a knowledge provider to a students' helper and instructor. And these standards need the special language use by teachers, namely, the humor. There are some characters of the traditional English teaching system. The first, teachers try their best to make any possible way to improve students' marks. Some of the teachers should be respected for their effort, but they use wrong methods, so the ... Of the three major colonizers who vied for control of North America from the 15th to 17th centuries, it was the early–bird Spanish who got the worm, but after all was said and done, it was England who got the more desirable cheese. After 1763, the English had control of all land east of the Mississippi river and virtually all of present–day Canada. The English were able to gain the upper hand in the conflict for control of North America not only because of military victories, but also because of good timing. With the Spanish out of the picture and Portugal busy with their own colonies in South America, the time was right for England to grab their slice of the North American pie. The English victory over Spain in 1588 sparked an English renaissance in taking to the sea. People became interested in sailing, also because of the amazing treasures the newly knighted Sir Francis Drake was reaping in from the West Indies. England had the financial capabilities to colonize, but they now needed manpower to live in and maintain those colonies. And lucky for England, their timing was just right. Britain's feudal system had created a large gap between their upper and lower classes. The members of the lower class were looking to move up on the food chain by whatever means necessary. At that time, the amount of land you owned signified your power, but in England, there was less available land and a growing lower class. If the lower class couldn't find land to own in England, then they would have to search elsewhere. At that time, there happened to be an entire continent of land available across the sea. Meanwhile, people were being persecuted for their religious beliefs, and they were not able to tolerate this anymore. People were turning to the New World with the hope of a religious sanctuary. • 47. Economic Causes Of British Settlement In North America Essay Although England's religious turmoil played a role in the development of British settlements, England's economic problems fueled much of the settling of British North America. England's economic situation caused many settlers to come for economic success rather than religious freedoms. Colonists fled to Massachusetts Bay not only to escape religious persecution but also economic decline. Settlers sent by the Virginia Company were attracted by the promises and opportunities to live a better life. Economics soon became the underlying reason for colonization in North America. Economic concerns of England caused the colonization of British North America. From 1550 to 1600, England's population rose from 3 million to 4 million. Due to the high population, landlords began enclosing croplands, causing many small farmers to become landless. Any historian can easily give you a list of the many different factors that shaped the development of the British colonies in North America but there is only one primary factor that shaped it. This primary factor is religion making the statement that "geography was the primary factor in shaping the development of the British Colonies in North America" invalid. These British Colonies would not have been as successful if they weren't religiously motivated and religiously tolerant. Religion was the drive and reason to why they migrated to North America and the basis for the majority of the British colonies. Some may argue that religion cannot be the primary factor because it was itself affected by geography but that does not matter. These people forget that if it wasn't for the colonists' strong religious beliefs they wouldn't have colonized to America. • 51. Compare And Contrast New England And Chesapeake Colonies During the mid 17th century two regions carved roots for England in North America. Coming from the same homeland one would assume their inner workings would closely mirror each other but this was not the case for the New England and Chesapeake colonies. Though faced with similar hardships, the ways they handled the difficulties starkly contrast one another. Both New England and Chesapeake suffered from religious tensions, both holding some settlers wishing to flee England in order to practice their religion without persecution and hoping for a better life across seas. In one instance, Chesapeake's Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore, a catholic Englishman hoping to create a safe haven for catholic settlers to worship. However Baltimore stayed in England and the majority of the settlers who came to the area were protestant. This caused strife over the only church eventually leading to the pro religion–tolerance governor to be thrown in jail and three catholic leaders to be hung. Unlike Chesapeake, the New England colonies were founded by a strict puritan named John Winthrop who stayed in the New England region. These colonies faced a few rebellions by two different activists with different ideas, causing waves throughout the community. One, a man by the name of Roger Williams believed in separating church and state to keep religion pure. The second, a woman by the name of Anne Hutchinson refuted the validity of some of the ministers. In a less gory fashion, both were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. The Pros And Cons Of British Colonization In America After the French and Indian War, Britain fell into great debt due to the costs of the war. Thus, in order to solve their financial issues, Britain imposed taxes on the colonists, such as the Stamp Act, Townshend Act, and the Tea Act. However, the colonists were appalled by these taxes as they felt that they were not responsible for the debt nor the war, therefore, claiming that the British did not have the right to tax them. As a response to these new policies, the colonists held various rebellions, including the Boston Tea Party. However, despite being taxed by the British without representation, the British policies in the colonies were completely justified as the colonists in America were still part of the British empire, and were entirely responsible for the financial crisis in Britain. Upon discovery of the New World, many countries began colonizing the land, and Britain's main goal in America was to start colonization, and expand their empire into the new world–not to send off their people away for good. Thus, despite being a different continent from England, the British colonies in America were still part of the British empire. If America were to be excluded from these policies, then the rest of Britain's colonies would have to be excluded as well–dwindling Britain's title as a world power. During the beginning of colonization in America, the British colonists occupied most of the east coast and looked to expanding more westward, into French territory, causing the ... • 59. New England Vs Chesapeake Colonies A World Apart Why did the New England and Chesapeake colonies differ so much? Although both these colonies where inhabited by people of English origin the similarities ended there. Such factors as motive of settlement, the settlers themselves and even geography of settlement all shaped these colonies into two very distinctive societies. The settlers who first landed in Jamestown had very different aspirations than the puritans who landed later in the New England area. Although both saw the new world as a land of opportunity their definition of this opportunity was very different. "Early Virginians at Jamestown hoped to find gold, they and the settlers in Maryland quickly discovered that growing tobacco was the only sure means of making money" (Corbett 73). These early settlers may have been let down by the lack of gold in the Chesapeake area however their motives remained the same. Britain at the time was becoming increasingly overcrowded and many people saw the New world as a land of opportunity. They not only sought jobs, but also had high hopes of scoring in big quickly without any intentions of staying. This would lead to many repercussions for the settlers when they found out that scoring it big in the new world wasn't a possibly. They were unprepared for saying and this meant such things as growing crops and pulling in the harvest were not on the highest part of their agenda. The British companies that funded these ... The Southern, New England and Middle colonies clearly show theses similarities and differences, particularly in terms of land, labor, religion, and native relations. The colonies of the south and the New England had one similarity; there relationship with the natives. Both of the colonies had very bad relations with the natives. The New England colonies didn't rely on land to make money because they had a diverse economy and also tobacco and other cash crops needed a specific climate to be grown in. They didn't have to rely on one crop instead they were able to rely on rum, fur trade, fishing, trade, logging and shipbuilding. The next difference is religion. The south had religion but it wasn't as big of a deal as the New England colonies. This was because the south spent most of the time farming that although they did have church agriculture was more significant. The New England colonies, especially Massachusetts, had a very strict religious system. Failure to follow this system could result in death or banishment. The last difference between them is the labor. In the south they needed a lot of slaves because crops like tobacco required constant attention like making sure it was healthy and also doing a lot of watching over those plants to make sure they were being grown properly. The south was also a slave society in that in order for it to be successful they would need a lot of slaves. On the other hand the New England colonies didn't need slaves because the crops that they used didn't need the attention that cash crops needed. Another reason is because they ... • 69. New England Vs Chesapeake Colonies Although both the New England and the Chesapeake region colonies, which were located in Maryland, Virginia. Had been settled and ruled by the English, in the year 1700 the colonies had evolved into two very separate distinct societies. The first major cause of this differentiation lays in the very first reasons in which the founding of the two region's colonies were originally discussed and planned. For example in 1607 the London Company of Virginia, which is a joint–stock company, had been formed to settle in the Virginia area colony full of Englishmen. However the Company wanted this colony solely for economic gain for the mother country itself. As the (Document F), Captain Smith's history of Virginia, shows the first colonists spent a majority of their time searching for gold like the in Spanish windfall instead of planting crops. As a result, half of the colony died of starvation and malnutrition. Only Capt. Smith's assumption of dictatorial power and his use of draconian measures prevented the colony from collapsing completely, which was the saving grace. In contrast to the mercenary nature of Virginia, New England was founded out of altruistic and religious reasons. The Separatists, and later the Puritans who arrived in 1630, came primarily so that they might practice their religion as they wished, free of royal interference. Now on to the Chesapeake region. Under document C random people, whoever signed up, were brought over, and not many of them were female. This lead to many problems, because the people didn't want to work. This deal, however, was good for the females, because they got an extremely large, at least for this time, amount of freedom. Document G talks about how no one wanted to do anything, even defend their place. Now for the economic reasons. The Chesapeake region developed a tobacco economy, everything they did was to grow or sell tobacco. Document H states that the poor were unhappy.
