BRIEF LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS IV
(Rewriting Ax + By = C in the Form f(x) = mx + b, and Vice Versa)
I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the discussion, the students are expected to:
1. Define what is a linear function;
2. Identify the different steps in rewriting the Ax + By = C into f(x) = mx + b
and vice versa; and
3. Rewrite Ax + By = C in the form f(x) = mx + b, and vice versa.
II. SUBJECT MATTER:
Topic: LINEAR FUNCTION
Sub – topic: Rewriting Ax + By = C in the Form f(x) = mx + b, and Vice Versa

A. Preliminary Activities
 Opening Prayer
 Checking of attendance of the students.
B. Checking of the Assignments
C. Presentation of the Lesson
A linear function is a function of the form f(x) = mx + b, where m and b
are real numbers, and m≠0. Its graph is a continuous slanting line with slope m
and y-intercept b.
Another way of describing a function is by using equations. The linear
function can be described by a polynomial of degree 1. The equation of the form
Ax + By = C can be rewritten in the form f(x) = mx + b, and vice versa, if we let
f(x) = y.
Illustrative Examples:
 Rewrite 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 6 in the form f(x) = mx + b.
Solutions:
Let f(x) = y.
3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 6
1. Add -3x to both sides.
3𝑥 + (−3𝑥) + 2𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 6
2𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 6
2. Divide both sides by 2.

3. Rewrite it in the form f(x) = mx + b.

 Rewrite 𝑓(𝑥) = −5𝑥 + 15 in the form Ax + By = C.
Solutions:
Let y = f(x).
𝑓(𝑥) = −5𝑥 + 15
1. Change f(x) into y.
𝑦 = −5𝑥 + 15
2. Add 5x to both sides.
𝑦 + 5𝑥 = −5𝑥 + 5𝑥 + 15
𝑦 + 5𝑥 = 15
3. Arrange the terms.
5𝑥 + 𝑦 = 15

Test I. Rewrite the following in the form f(x) = mx + b.
1. 3𝑥 + 𝑦 = 12
2. 5𝑥 − 4𝑦 = 20
Test II. Rewrite the following in the form Ax + By = C.
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 + 6
2. 𝑓(𝑥) = 13𝑥 − 4

IV. EVALUATION:
Rewrite the following in the form f(x) = mx + b and vice versa.

  • 1. BRIEF LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS IV (Rewriting Ax + By = C in the Form f(x) = mx + b, and Vice Versa) I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the discussion, the students are expected to: 1. Define what is a linear function; 2. Identify the different steps in rewriting the Ax + By = C into f(x) = mx + b and vice versa; and 3. Rewrite Ax + By = C in the form f(x) = mx + b, and vice versa. II. SUBJECT MATTER: Topic: LINEAR FUNCTION Sub – topic: Rewriting Ax + By = C in the Form f(x) = mx + b, and Vice Versa References: Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry and Statistics, Dilao, et. al pages 31-32 Materials: Visual Aids Strategies: Exposition and discussion III. PROCEDURES: A. Preliminary Activities  Opening Prayer  Checking of attendance of the students. B. Checking of the Assignments C. Presentation of the Lesson A linear function is a function of the form f(x) = mx + b, where m and b are real numbers, and m≠0. Its graph is a continuous slanting line with slope m and y-intercept b. Another way of describing a function is by using equations. The linear function can be described by a polynomial of degree 1. The equation of the form Ax + By = C can be rewritten in the form f(x) = mx + b, and vice versa, if we let f(x) = y. Illustrative Examples:  Rewrite 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 6 in the form f(x) = mx + b. Solutions: Let f(x) = y. 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 6 1. Add -3x to both sides. 3𝑥 + (−3𝑥) + 2𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 6 2𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 6 2. Divide both sides by 2.
  • 2. 2𝑦 2 = −3𝑥 + 6 2 𝑦 = − 3 2 𝑥 + 3 3. Rewrite it in the form f(x) = mx + b. 𝑓(𝑥) = − 3 2 𝑥 + 3  Rewrite 𝑓(𝑥) = −5𝑥 + 15 in the form Ax + By = C. Solutions: Let y = f(x). 𝑓(𝑥) = −5𝑥 + 15 1. Change f(x) into y. 𝑦 = −5𝑥 + 15 2. Add 5x to both sides. 𝑦 + 5𝑥 = −5𝑥 + 5𝑥 + 15 𝑦 + 5𝑥 = 15 3. Arrange the terms. 5𝑥 + 𝑦 = 15 D. Activity Test I. Rewrite the following in the form f(x) = mx + b. 1. 3𝑥 + 𝑦 = 12 2. 5𝑥 − 4𝑦 = 20 Test II. Rewrite the following in the form Ax + By = C. 1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 + 6 2. 𝑓(𝑥) = 13𝑥 − 4 E. Generalization What is the Standard Form of a Linear Equation? What is the Slope-Intercept Form of a Linear Equation? IV. EVALUATION: Rewrite the following in the form f(x) = mx + b and vice versa. 1. 5𝑥 + 8𝑦 = 16 2. 𝑓(𝑥) = − 7 3 𝑥 + 7 3 3. 𝑓(𝑥) = 5𝑥 − 8 4. 4𝑥 = 7 − 2𝑦 5. 3𝑥 + 7𝑦 = 14
