A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

UoA KPI
1 in 4 graduates will have had an international learning experience during their degree
Latest participation is 16% (in 2016)
ViaTRM provides us with a platform to both encourage students to consider their options for study abroad (uses a gamification strategy to encourage along the ‘just curious students’) while also serving as a platform for the University to house the various university supported study abroad opportunities we have available. It helps us to both increase participation in study abroad as well as manage the associated risk (by knowing where are students are we can insure them and assist in times of crisis). – from Ainslie
GSA SNAPSHOT + USG & HEI SUPPORT
GSA rationale: Being part of a larger initiative will provide networks and resources to support the efforts of campuses to increase study abroad. For many years individual institutions and organizations have tried to do this alone without the effect that we feel is needed (given the 1 in 10 stat)
With Generation Study Abroad, we aim to mobilize variety of stakeholders to affect the following change:
Accelerate Growth – Doubling by the End of the Decade. SA increases have averaged from 2%-5% per year (which will take more than 20 years to double the #), instead we need a 16.5% growth rate per year to reach the goal of 600,000 students studying in credit and noncredit programs by the end of the decade.
Diversify who studies abroad
Increase funding: IIE has provided grants to students and institutions through its Generation Study Abroad Fund, has leveraged funding from public and private sector partners around the world, and has helped and encouraged campuses to dedicate and raise money to support study abroad offices, programs, and scholarships
Expand the definition: GSA is helping students, parents and educators to look more broadly at all the options, to offer and consider other ways to get international educational experience that may be more accessible, such as expanded internship, volunteering and service learning abroad, as well as pursuing full degrees abroad.
Change perceptions of study abroad so that that every student expects to study abroad as an essential part of a college education
How it helps USG and HEIs:
GSA helps colleges build on current best practices and find new ways to extend study abroad opportunities – including academic study abroad programs, internships, service learning and non-credit educational experiences – to many students who are not currently taking part in study abroad
Employers are increasingly looking for workers who have the international experience, cross-cultural competence and language skills needed to thrive in this rapidly changing environment
1 in 5 American jobs is tied to international trade; U.S. graduates will compete for jobs with graduates from around the world, by 2030 China will surpass the US as the world’s largest economy
A survey of more than 2,000 U.S. HR managers showed that 70% of respondents believe that U.S. HEIs need to do more to prepare graduates in terms of language skills and multicultural experience
Supporting Research on the Student Experience: Better grades + higher graduation rates
University of Georgia found the students who studied abroad had an 18% higher 4-year graduation rate than those who did not study abroad
Indiana University reported that study abroad students earned higher grades and completed degrees in four years at a higher rate than their peers
Analysis by the SAGE Research Project of 6,000 alumni over 50 years demonstrated that study abroad had a substantial long-term impact on individuals' career paths and global engagement
GSA IN NEW ZEALAND
NZ experienced second largest growth this year at 10.1% (behind only Israel at 15.3%)
Of the 3,325 U.S. students in NZ, about 1/3 are attributed to GSA # goals set (and reached) by 5 universities = 1,000 students in 2015
Funding pledges total over $500,000 and 3 partners have allocated $150,000 in total so far for scholarships
