The document summarizes information about flood insurance programs and reforms, including:
1) The National Flood Insurance Program and the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 have led to changes in how flood insurance rates are determined and increases in rates for many policyholders.
2) Property owners can take steps to lower their flood insurance rates such as pursuing mitigation grants to elevate homes, participating in the Community Rating System, and using coverage for elevating or floodproofing structures.
3) The elimination of subsidies will significantly increase rates for some pre-FIRM homes and non-primary residences. Rates will also increase when new flood maps show higher risk areas.
The document discusses California's efforts to regulate stormwater runoff from new construction projects using a watershed management approach. It acknowledges the challenges of population growth putting pressure on water resources. Low impact development techniques are promoted to mimic natural hydrologic processes and protect water quality. However, over-engineered solutions risk overlooking soils and overall watershed health. The regulatory framework is continuing to evolve from a focus on runoff volume to consideration of additional hydrologic factors and outcomes related to beneficial uses.
Angie Jukes, Stockport MBC - Stockport Renewable Energy ExperiencesPAS_Team
Stockport Council in the UK has developed renewable energy policies and provides guidance to help developers implement renewable technologies in new developments. The policies require energy improvements in existing homes and new developments above certain thresholds. They also designate areas for district heating networks, microgeneration, and community-owned wind. Implementing the policies proved challenging initially due to lack of expertise, but over time developers and members gained more support. Renewable installations in the area have increased, though energy remains a lower priority than other planning issues. Lessons learned include the need for validation checklists, viability guidance, training, and pre-application discussions.

Challenges and opportunities around climate change, biodiversity objectives, and engaging local communities are also covered.
The Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 reauthorized the National Flood Insurance Program for 5 years and mandated risk-based flood insurance rates be charged to each covered property. It will discontinue certain premium subsidies and increase rates for some pre-FIRM and commercial properties by 25% annually until reaching actuarial rates. Post-FIRM primary residences in remapped areas will see a 20% annual increase. The Act increases funding for flood mitigation and allows for demolition and rebuilding. It impacts policyholders in various ways depending on their property and flood risk.
The document summarizes South Australia's plan to ensure adequate water supply to meet demand through 2050. The plan involves expanding desalination, increasing stormwater harvesting and recycling, conserving water usage, and adapting planning and legislation to incorporate climate change impacts. Catchment sensitive farming & Common land from Nature EnglandChun-Wei Lan
Catchment Sensitive Farming is a joint project between the Environment Agency and Natural England that provides training and advice to farmers in selected areas, called priority catchments, to raise awareness of diffuse water pollution from agriculture. Agriculture contributes around 25% of phosphate and between 25-50% of pathogens in English waters. Up to 75% of sediment in rivers can be attributed to agriculture. Farmers in priority catchments can apply for free training on topics like manure management and pesticide use. They can also apply for capital grants to fund facilities that improve water quality, such as covering collecting yards to separate clean and dirty water. Common land is privately owned land where others have traditional rights to use it, such as grazing livestock. Commons
Environmental Management Presentation for Graduate InductionSimon Bell MSc AIEMA
Environmental management is important for three main reasons - legal compliance, financial benefits, and moral responsibility. Legally, there are many regulations that must be followed at national and European levels. Financially, environmental management can reduce costs through efficiency and being an attractive partner. Morally, businesses have a duty to protect human and environmental health for current and future generations. At our company, environmental management is integrated into all aspects of work from early planning to project delivery to operations. Key areas of focus include protected wildlife and habitats, water protection, waste management, and engaging with local regulators and communities.
The document outlines a pilot private tree bylaw for the Roseland Community in Burlington, which regulates the injury or removal of trees over 30cm in diameter on private property to help protect the urban forest. The bylaw is part of a two-year pilot project to evaluate regulating private trees, as almost 90% of land in Burlington is privately owned. Residents must obtain permits for tree work, replace trees removed, and may pay securities or compensation fees depending on the work being done.
