- Pork production reached record high levels in Q4 2012 despite warnings about high feed costs reducing meat supplies. However, pork production trends had shifted downward beginning in 2008 with the surge in corn prices above $4/bushel.
- Prior to 2008, all major meat production species were growing steadily each quarter. The spike in grain costs disrupted this and caused production cuts, especially after prices rose above $6-7/bushel.
- Had grain costs not increased as sharply, meat production for all species would be significantly higher now, providing billions of additional pounds of protein for consumers each quarter.

Animal agriculture makes significant contributions to meeting human needs by providing food, clothing, livelihoods, and pleasure. Livestock convert feed into high-quality protein for human consumption. The top sources of protein worldwide are fish, pork, beef, and poultry. Livestock also generate income and jobs, especially in Iowa where livestock production represents about 50% of net farm income and supports over 70,000 jobs. Advancements in genetics, nutrition, health, and management have led to major increases in production efficiency over the past century.
Pakistan livestock position Allah Dad Khan

There is significant potential to improve productivity, introduce value-added processing, develop modern supply chains and export markets, particularly for the large halal market. Establishing modern abattoirs, livestock farms, and poultry processing plants could help Pakistan better utilize its large livestock populations and meet growing global meat demand.

Preservation usually involves preventing the growth of bacteria, yeasts, fungi, and other micro-organisms (although some methods work by introducing bacteria, or fungi to the food), as well as retarding the oxidation of fats which cause rancidity. There are various methods of preservation chilling, freezing, curing, smoking, dehydration, canning, radiation preservation etc.
