Brachiopods are marine invertebrates that have two shells or valves that enclose their soft parts. They live attached to the seafloor by a stalk-like structure called a pedicle. Brachiopods are filter feeders that use a lophophore structure to collect food particles from seawater. They have two main muscle types that open and close their shells. Brachiopods first appeared in the Cambrian period and were very common in the past but now only about 70 living genera remain.
