This experiment aims to determine the thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH°, ΔS°) for the dissolution of borax into borate ions in water at two temperatures. Students will prepare saturated borax solutions at room temperature and in an ice bath. They will titrate aliquots of the solutions with HCl to determine the borate ion concentration and calculate the solubility product (Ksp) at each temperature. Using the Ksp values and equations relating ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS° to temperature and Ksp, students can determine the thermodynamic parameters for this dissolution reaction. This will provide insight into whether the reaction is spontaneous and the roles of entropy and enthalpy.
