Editor's Notes

  1. Tristan Bancks: The Australian Children's Book Week theme for 2017 is 'Escape to Everywhere'. It sparks lots of ideas for me. It  invites wonder about the world and the wide variety of humans who live here. The theme also captures why I read – to escape – to live inside someone else's mind for a while and to see and feel what they do. That's why they say reading makes you more compassionate and empathetic. And we need that now more than ever.
  2. The Patchwork Bike – Maxine Beneba Clarke – West Indian immigrant – writes and talks about racism, poet. The Hate Race. Van Thann Rudd – left wing activist, nephew of Kevin Rudd. The Patchwork Bike - What's the best fun in the whole village? Riding the patchwork bike we made! When you live in a village at the edge of the No-Go Desert, you need to make your own fun. That's when you and your brothers get inventive and build a bike from scratch, using everyday items. The illustrations by artist Van Thann Rudd of paint on cardboard are stark and simple, often quite abstract, but they effectively flesh out this world. The Patchwork Bike asks more questions than it answers, making it a great conversation starter to learn more about other cultures. Home in the Rain – Francie and her mum, who is expecting a baby girl, are driving home from Grandma's in the heavy rain and Francie is mulling over what to name her baby sister. Families – observation about ordinary people doing everyday things.
  3. One Photo – a poignant story about a family and the loss of the father. Dad comes home with a camera (not digital) and takes photos of many things, but not his wife and son. After his death the boy realises why. Out – a refugee story with a more positive outcome. A little girl and her mother have fled their homeland, making the long and treacherous journey by boat to seek asylum and have successfully settled into an apartment. But happiness alludes them as one person is missing.
  4. Mechanica – set in the 23rd century, this is an imaginative field guide to the fantasy world of Mechanica creatures, with amazing and beautiful steampunk-inspired illustrations. In this field guide from the future, a dashing explorer-Miss Liberty Crisp-details amazing creatures known as Mechanica: human-created life forms designed to replace extinct species. My Brother (quoting Lamont teacher notes) When a gentle creature sets out to search for a lost brother we are taken on an ethereal journey across land and sea to strange, beautiful and faraway places. To fantastic, floating cities, and medieval towns full of dark alleyways and winding staircases – to vast open grasslands and eerie, silent forests – and eventually to a place of timeless beauty and light. My Brother is a metaphorical picture storybook for older children that looks at loss and grief from a sibling’s perspective.
  5. Rockhopping The story of an eventful hike in Gariwerd (the Grampians), from the creator of the multi-award-winning Rivertime. Join Clancy and Uncle Egg on a rambling, rockhopping adventure in Gariwerd (the Grampians), to find the source of the Glenelg River. A story about following your flow, and the unexpected places you may go. Jimmy Cook Discovers Third Grade When Jimmy Cook discovers that Captain Cook met with a sticky end in Hawaii, he's determined to travel to the island to finish what his famous ancestor started. Big dreams come with a big price, but no price is too big for Captain Jimmy Cook, especially if it means beating the world's most annoying person, Alice Toolie..
  6. From the author of Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy comes the story of a friendship between two girls set in Victorian England, with magical machines, wizards, witches, a mysterious underworld, and a race against time. Marnie Clark of Curdie Vale can ride but she doesn’t have a horse. She dreams of owning one and having the whole world to ride it in. Before too long Marnie is gifted Mrs Margaret ‘Maggie’ Whitlam, a beautiful, big Clydesdale – bold, fearless and able to jump anything. From the very first ride, Marnie and Maggie get more adventure than they bargained for. Soon Marnie is learning to negotiate newfound friendships, pony club and how to stand up for what she believes in.
  7. Dragonfly Song - The little girl found under a bush has no name and cannot speak. Is she a miracle child who escaped the raiders, or is she a bad-luck child, the one who called the Bull King's ship to the island? No one sees the mama-stone around her neck, with the sign of the dragonfly. And only Luki, in training to leap the bulls, knows that she charmed the viper who would have killed him. When the girl turns twelve, she discovers her name - Aissa - and she knows that her one chance to live freely is to become a bull dancer, and be taken away to the island of the Bull King. Within these Walls - For Miri and her family, life in Warsaw is full of simple joys. The smell of freshly baked challah, the promise of summer holidays, and Fridays when everyone comes together to celebrate the Sabbath. But when the Germans march into Warsaw with their campaign of hatred against the Jews, Miri and her family must move to the ghetto. One by one her family are taken from her, and Miri finds herself alone. Based on true events, WITHIN THESE WALLS gives a realistic account of what is was like to be a Jewish child in Warsaw during the Holocaust
  8. Bone Sparrow Subhi's imagination is as big as the ocean and wide as the sky, but his world is much smaller: he's spent his whole life in an immigration detention centre. THE BONE SPARROW is a powerful, heartbreaking, sometimes funny and ultimately uplifting hymn to freedom and love. Yellow - If fourteen-year-old Kirra is having a mid-life crisis now, then it doesn't bode well for her life expectancy. Her so-called friends bully her, whatever semblance of a mother she had has been drowned at the bottom of a gin bottle ever since her dad left them for another woman, and now a teenage ghost is speaking to her through a broken phone booth. Kirra and the ghost make a pact. She'll prove who murdered him almost twenty years ago if he does three things for her. He makes her popular, he gets her parents back together, and he doesn't haunt her. Things aren't so simple however, and Kirra realises that people can be haunted in more ways than one.
  9. Years ago, Rachel had a crush on Henry Jones. The day before she moved away, she tucked a love letter into his favorite book in his family’s bookshop. She waited. But Henry never came. Now Rachel has returned to the city—and to the bookshop—to work alongside the boy she’d rather not see, if at all possible, for the rest of her life. A story about love, loss, friendship and being true to yourself. Waer - When Lowell Sencha finds the strange girl lying as if dead on the riverbank, he is startled to find that she is like them: waer. Human, but able to assume the form of a wolf. The Sencha family’s small community has kept itself sequestered and unnoticed, free from persecution. The arrival of a fellow traveller, and a hunted one at that, threatens their very survival. Under attack Sencha and Lowell must make peace and work together to unite the different groups and address the threat their very existence.
  10. One Would Think the Deep - It’s 1997 and seventeen-year-old Sam is mourning the sudden loss of his mum …Sam has always had things going on in his head that no one else understands, even his mum. And now she’s dead, it’s worse than ever. With nothing but his skateboard and a few belongings in a garbage bag, Sam goes to live with the strangers his mum cut ties with seven years ago: Aunty Lorraine and his cousins Shane and Minty. Frankie - Frankie Vega is angry. Just ask the guy whose nose she broke. Or the cop investigating the burglary she witnessed, or her cheating ex-boyfriend or her aunt who's tired of giving second chances...When a kid shows up claiming to be Frankie's half brother, it opens the door to a past she doesn't want to remember. And when that kid goes missing, the only person willing to help is a boy with stupidly blue eyes … and secrets of his own. Frankie's search for the truth might change her life, or cost her everything.
  11. Go Home Cheeky Animals – Joanna Bell & Dion Beasely. Told in the first person – set at Canteen Creek –where there are cheeky dogs everywhere. But when the cheeky goats, donkeys, buffaloes and camels make mischief in the camp, the dogs just lie there until those pesky animals really go too far. Then the cheeky camp dogs roar into action. A good follow on from Too Many Cheeky Dogs Humor
  12. Chip Chip, like most other gulls, would do anything for fish and chips. When he’s banned from his favourite food, he is desperate to get it back on the menu. So Chip hatches a brilliant idea to solve the problem...but has he gone too far this time? Gary - Gary the pigeon can't fly. When his racing pigeon friends head off in their travel basket, Gary stays at home. He organises his scrapbook of travel mementos and dreams about the adventures the other pigeons are having. But when Gary accidentally ends up a very long way from home, he discovers that flying is not the only way to have adventures.
  13. The Snow Wombat An adventurous young wombat finds his way around a winter landscape on a journey through the snow, meeting animals, birds and people along the way...but there's no place like home!
  14. All I want for Christmas: An Australian Christmas is threatened when drought takes hold. A little girl has only one wish for rain. Will her wish come true? The simple narrative with smooth story flow in rhyming couplets (pre read to ensure rhythm. Little Jane’s optimistic pilgrimage to a certain red-and-fur-clad fellow (incongruous in the heat of a bush summer) is motivated by a selfless desire to ease the strain on her own and other farming families. Forward’s landscapes and characters (both human and animal) are a mellow wet-on-wet watercolour with added pencil sketch-lines to add details. Megan is also shortlisted in the Crichton Awards for new Illustrators for A Patch from Scratch Nannie Loves Nannie lives on a farm with rolling hills, a muddy creek, and lots of animals. Nannie loves everything about her farm. But what she loves most is when her family comes to stay. And her family love visiting her on the farm. There is so much to see and do on Nannies farm – picking fruit, herding the cows, shooing the sheep, walking across the rolling hills, and best of all, spending time with Nannie
  15. Fabish was a handsome grey racehorse. In his racing days, he wasn't the fastest horse, but he always tried his hardest. And when he retired, Fabish took care of the yearlings in a paddock far away from the training track. Fabish showed the flighty young horses what was expected of a racehorse. A powerful and beautifully illustrated picture book based on the true story of a brave horse called Fabish, who saved a group of young horses during the Black Saturday bushfires. William Bligh: A Stormy Story of Tempestuous Times, the third in a series of books on the British settlement of Australia, peels back the layers of some of the most incredible circumstances in Australia’s colonial history, and invites young readers to examine what lies below the surface. Beautifully written by Michael Sedunary and complemented by the stunning artwork of Australia’s most prominent ceramic artist, Bern Emmerichs, this is an exceptional book.
  16. A-Z of Endangered animals - On this journey through the alphabet you will encounter some of the world's most beautiful, rare and endangered animals - from the majestic amur tiger and the curious kakapo, to the misunderstood Tasmanian devil and the shy zebra duiker. Come on an illustrated expedition through the animal kingdom with Tasmanian artist Jennifer Cossins. Amazing Animals - With its enticing and colourful design and its fascinating information, this is a book that children will want to pour over-either at home, in the classroom or on a road trip. This book brings together 55 national parks, selected across all Australian states and territories, and over 120 animals. It is divided into seven sections according to habitat (woodlands and grasslands; forests; rainforests; arid zones; mountains; wetlands and waterways; coasts, oceans and islands), each including a number of national parks and a selection of the fish, reptiles, frogs, birds and mammals that inhabit them. At the end of the book is a section on 'little critters'-beetles, spiders, butterflies, grasshoppers, bugs and so on.
  17. The Gigantic Book of Genes has been designed with the needs of both early and more advanced readers in mind. Simple and succinct language is used throughout the book, with no more than a few sentences on each page. The large format images relate directly to the text, so young readers have multiple entry points to engage with the information. There is a brief glossary in the back of the book, which will aid young readers in developing the tools of research and analysis. The Gigantic Book of Genes uses dynamic images to capture the imagination of the reader. Colourful single-page and double-page photographs are contrasted with images isolated on white and block-colour backdrops, which further help to captivate the reader.
