Historical Context:
History's least-known yet most fertile period in science was the extraordinary Islamic
scientific revolution between 700 and 1400. The story of the scientists and inventors
is woven into a journey through the Islamic empires of the middle ages that enabled
this revolution, and its contribution to science in Western culture.
4. Writing Style:
This 'Science and Islam’ book is a very fascinating and clearly written book. This
impressive book by Ehsan Mahsood, reveals the intersection between science and
religion and also permeated the history of Islam. Ehsan Mahsood's book emphasis
on context, combined with his easy prose, measured self-confident tone, and an
effort to inject compelling human drama into the narrative, makes the present book
for the most part wonderfully captivating.
My thoughts:
I think this book is a very clearly and precise written book that shows to the readers
what exactly had happened during the old times. The author managed to narrate the
social and political context in which Islamic discoveries took place in such a way that
I could not put it down. Science and Islam is a great way to get introduced to the
contributions of Muslims during their golden age (750-1258). Unfortunately, Western
textbooks completely ignore Muslim scientific accomplishments. In reading this book,
your understanding of scientific history will be flipped on it is head via facts about
Muslim biologists (natural selection 1000 years pre-Darwin), doctors (al-Zahrawi
basically invented modern surgery), and mathematics (al-Khawarizmi pioneering
liner and quadratic equations). A thing that I does not satisfied about this book is the
unconfirmed facts that he put in this book. In my opinion, if he is not sure about the
facts, he should not wrote them in the first place. But overall, I am very greatful and
honoured to read such book. This book is a very good introduction for me to
understand how beautiful the contributions of the Islamic civilization is.
