M12S07 - Retention & ESI - Paths to Success - Part TwoMER Conference
From MER Conference 2012
Speakers: Christine Burns and Carol Stainbrook
This session explains "why" your organization's technology selections impact "how" the updated retention schedules described in part one of this two-part session can be applied to electronically stored information (ESI). Learn reasonable and actionable approaches for embedding retention policies into e-mail, file shares and enterprise applications.
This session will address:
- Why "perfection" is often impractical, when it comes to applying retention policy to ESI and some reasonable alternatives to perfection.
- How the technologies for email, file shares, and other ESI affect the implementation of retention policies.
- When it may be necessary to choose different retention strategies for different technologies such e-mail, file shares and enterprise applications.
- Considerations for applying retention policy to data in enterprise applications.
- Criteria to help prioritize where to begin when applying retention policy.
In this session you will learn how to tailor your organization's approach to retention schedules so they are reasonable, actionable and result in the orderly destruction of eligible information, given your organization's technology selections.

Grouputer Virtual Workshops Go Beyond Web Conferencing
Grouputer is an advanced e-collaboration programs that accelerates and improves decision making and learning in local and distributed workshops, meetings, surveys and training.
The Grouputer application solves the problem of formulating and documenting complex plans in virtual workshops by combining standard web conferencing tools with GDSS (Group Decision Support System) tools in a single software application.
Customers describe Grouputer as “web conferencing on steroids" because it enables complex planning to be conducted in virtual workshops that would otherwise require lengthy and expensive face-to-face meetings.
While web conferencing tools enable information and expertise sharing in presentations, documents and the web, GDSS tools actively engage participants in collaborative critical thinking activities achieving better solutions, with buy in and commitment.
Ideas from team members are recorded in text and processed using problem solving and planning methods such as agenda setting, brainstorming, categorizing, prioritizing, evaluation and action planning.
Formatted reports document workshop output ready for immediate distribution. A Process Builder is available to template meeting methodologies and training programs for repeat use and corporate consistency.
According to Gartner, when web conferencing tools are combined with GDSS meeting performance is enhanced and there are fewer dysfunctional meetings.
Fortune 500 companies, Defence, and consultants use Grouputer in intensive planning projects in real time or at times convenient to participants.
Customer applications include business and process improvement, Six Sigma/Lean, risk and project management and strategy development for sales, marketing, HR, information technology and operations.
Grouputer offers program and application security and is available as a hosted service and perpetual licence.

Case Study: Developing Content No Matter What the Resources
If the website is the center of the marketing universe, content is the cement that holds that foundation together, according to Eric Webb, Senior Director of Communications & Brand, McGladrey, a global assurance, tax and consulting firm with revenues of $1.4 billion and 7000 employees. This case study covers how McGladrey completely revamped its content marketing and website design, streamlining content production in the process. The company increased Web traffic, boosted its content production, and provided better measurement against lead generation efforts, creating direct attribution of hundreds of thousands of dollars and showing influence of impacting millions more in opportunities.
Presented by: Eric Webb, Sr. Director, Go To Market Services, McGladrey LLP

Session Description:
Mobile technology and social media are straining the resources of information companies. On top of their regular responsibilities, Editorial is expected to work with a wider range of media types, such as blogs and videos, some of which they have no experience in. Development needs to syndicate content to an array of smartphones and tablets.
This session offers a portfolio approach to creating successful, profitable mobile and social products. It presents frameworks for:
*Evaluating and supplementing existing talent, content and technology,
*Structuring the organization to be responsive and effective,
*Evaluating and funding new business ideas,
*Prioritizing initiatives so that the most promising are not starved of resources and the “”moonshots”" get a fighting chance, and
*Avoiding the pitfalls that arise from “”not knowing what you don’t know.”"
Learning Points:
This session will address key questions and provide actionable solutions for effectively building out your content offerings for smartphones, tablets and social media:
1. Budget – Are there funds available to support a mobile initiative? What is the new product development process? What features, functions and content should be included?
2. Organization – Is the current organizational structure conducive to creating mobile offerings?
3. Publishing – Can I use or augment my existing streams or do I need new ones?
4. Talent – Do I have the talent I need? If not, should I hire or outsource or train?

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms.
