Karnataka is vulnerable in varying degrees to a number of disasters induced by natural as well as human causes — 50% per cent of the total area is vulnerable to drought; 22 per cent of the total geographical area is prone to earthquakes of moderate intensity; northern districts in the Krishna and Godavari basins are prone to floods and river erosion; with about 300km of coastline, most of it is prone to cyclones and coastal erosion; and six districts in the Western Ghats are at risk from landslides. Further, the vulnerability to terrorism and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) disasters has also increased manifold.
1.2 Disaster Risks in Karnataka
Karnataka has been experiencing losses and damages due to various natural and human induced disasters such as drought, flood, cyclones, landslides, epidemics, etc. for a long time now. Disaster risks are further compounded by increasing vulnerabilities. These include the ever-growing population, the vast disparities in income, rapid urbanisation, increasing industrialisation, development within high-risk zones, environmental degradation, climate change, etc. All these threaten the population, national security, economy and its sustainable development. Nationally and internationally governments are taking proactive steps to prepare for such forseeable risks. Government of Karnataka takes this opportunity to issue the guidelines for the preparation of the District Plan for Disaster Management (DM) of disasters induced by natural causes as mandated by the Disaster Management Act, 2005 (DM ACT, 2005). The DM plans will build in region and hazard specific management tools in the context of regional and multi-hazard vulnerabilities.

The document summarizes interviews conducted after the 2015 Gorkha earthquake in Nepal. It found that while the UN-developed CLUSTER system was effective for information sharing between central governments, local information gathering and support for victims was limited due to political instability. It also noted a lack of standardized disaster reporting formats and public education. The document proposes introducing NIED's Web-GIS based disaster information sharing system to help visualize spatial data and coordinate responses between local municipalities.

It finds that rapid urbanization has increased municipal solid waste generation, which commonly gets disposed of through open dumping. Open dumping pollutes groundwater and air. While governments are developing sanitary landfills and using incineration and composting, transportation costs and pollution remain issues. Construction waste is also a major problem, with disposal sites often improperly managed. Sustainable solutions are needed to address waste management challenges.

It presents a case study of a village in Thrissur district where 93 houses were damaged. A new strategy is developed for volunteer-led reconstruction utilizing reusable materials, skilled/unskilled labor, technical experts, student volunteers, donations and government funds. Key elements include forming committees to organize the work, collecting resources, preparing a project report, obtaining approvals, executing reconstruction in a systematic manner, monitoring progress, and reassessing the strategy. Damage assessments found impacts including structural damage, electrical/plumbing issues, and lost documents that required repair.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

3. PREFACE
The characteristics of megacities have undergone a sea change
since the end of the 20th
century. These changes can be attributed
to alterations in their geo-physical structures and marked distortions
in the patterns of natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis,
floods, storms, landslides and droughts, which are now a worldwide
phenomenon.
Urban areas stand at a far bigger risk for multiple reasons. Today,
the cities are vulnerable to hazards that can be described as low
probability-high-risk consequences types. For instance, the
possibility of damages due to floods has increased five-fold in the
last 20 years. This is due to high concentration of both population
and social infrastructure in residential district.
An integrated risk management approach alone is the effective way
to deal with natural disasters. A slew of proactive measures and a
befitting community response can ease considerably the damages
likely to be caused by such disasters. The first step towards this
goal is to create an interminable communication network between
the agencies concerned so that the nature and extent of risk is
correctly assessed and the levels of preparedness suitably
enhanced. This can go a long way in the entire cycle of disaster
prevention in the normal, emergency and recovery phases.
After the destructive deluge of 26 July 2005, and the manmade
disasters of 11 July 2006 and 26 November 2008, the Municipal
Corporation of Greater Mumbai has decided to strengthen the
integrated approach, and to reduce response time and minimize
loss of life and property. This telephone directory incorporates all
the important numbers of the people and agencies involved in
disaster management. It will come in handy for all stakeholders and
communities for quick and effective interaction. It would be great
pleasure, to present this book for the valuable contribution towards
the “Integrated and Efficient Disaster Risk Management” and “Good
Disaster Risk Governance”.

off at the mains.
Take your emergency kit and
try to let your friends and family
where you are going.
Avoid contact with flood water -
it may be contaminated with

substances.
If you have to walk in standing
water, use a pole or stick to
ensure that you do not step into
deep water, open manholes or

through water. Report power
lines that are down to the
power company.
Look before you step - after a

deceptive, and shallow, fast
moving water can knock you off
your feet.
Don’t swim through fast flowing
water - you may get swept
away or struck by an object in
the water.
Don’t drive through a flooded
area - You may not be able to
see abrupt drop-offs and only

through flood water can also
cause additional damage to
nearby property.
Don’t return to your property
until the “All Clear” has been
given.
Don’t reconnect your power
