This document provides guidelines for diagnosing and managing blunt cardiac injury (BCI) according to the Eastern American Society of Trauma. It states that BCI is commonly caused by motor vehicle crashes and other deceleration injuries. While an abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) indicates possible BCI, a normal ECG alone does not rule it out. Troponin levels should also be measured, as a normal ECG and troponin together rule out BCI, while an abnormal ECG or troponin warrants admission. Echocardiograms are recommended for patients with hemodynamic instability. Sternal fractures alone do not predict BCI. The guidelines recommend performing ECGs and measuring troponin levels for suspected
