Blood transfusions are needed every three minutes around the world, and one in ten hospital patients require a transfusion. Donating blood can save up to four lives if the blood is fractionated, and the donation process involves health screening that can detect early signs of issues. Donating also helps stimulate the bone marrow to produce new blood cells. Certain medical conditions like anemia, heart disease, diabetes, and pregnancy preclude donation for safety reasons.
