Introduction • Located in the western suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, Elmhurst Animal Care Center provides preventive veterinary services as well as diagnosis and treatment for a variety of conditions. As part of its suite of surgical services, Elmhurst Animal Care Center offers procedures to eliminate bladder stones. Bladder stones are hard deposits of minerals, crystals, and organic matter. Veterinarians believe they develop when crystalline compounds, which have the capacity to grow into stones, are present at higher concentrations in the cat's urine. When the these compounds exceed a certain level, the urine reaches a saturation point, and any additional compounds can form bladder stones. These stones can grow to a diameter of several millimeters and can irritate the lining of the bladder or urethra, cause muscle spasms in the urinary tract, or block the flow of urine.
- 3. Bladder Stones • This presents in cats as urinary symptoms such as pain with urination or straining to urinate. Cats with bladder stones may also develop chronic urinary tract infections or obstruction, the latter of which is most common in male cats. A cat with bladder stones must undergo prompt treatment to avoid a urinary blockage, which can be life-threatening. Some bladder stone issues can be taken care of through a prescription diet and increased consumption of water, while in other situations shockwaves may be effective in sufficiently breaking down the stones. However, certain cases may necessitate surgical removal.
