This document summarizes a study on assessing the technological readiness of public libraries in Botswana. The study found that while public librarians have a positive attitude towards technology and believe it can improve services, the infrastructure and technologies available in many libraries is outdated. Challenges included poor Internet access due to low bandwidth, a lack of computers and automated systems. Recommendations included improving infrastructure, providing librarians training, and designating an IT staff person at each library to support technology needs.

The article deliberates on the changing role of library staff in the technology era. Due to electronic information explosion there are challenges for the library community at its very foundation, moving it away from the traditional paper and print format to an ethereal world of circuits and connectivity. Now the idea of library does not remain a physical repository that keeps information for people to access. Library staff has moved from the era of using early typewriters to the present internet. The study adopted a combination of purposive and convenience. The researcher used both primary and secondary sources of data. Personal interviews were the main data collection instrument and data collected was analyzed using SPSS. It was find out that Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) library staff possesses the skills in the use of technology in assisting their patrons in this changing electronic era but their level was not good enough. Recommendations were also provided in the aspect of giving training to library staff, partnering other institutions to increase versatility and collaborating with the university information support unit or service (ITSS).

This study investigated the competencies of librarians as a factor affecting information service delivery in Delta state university (DELSU) library and Federal university of petroleum resources (FUPRE) library. The main objective of the study was to determine the extent to which information and competencies of librarians in DELSU and FUPRE affect their information service delivery. The instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire. A descriptive survey design was used in this study. A total of 61 librarians were selected using the total enumeration sampling technique since the total population was manageable. A total of 52 copies of the questionnaire were retrieved and analyzed using simple percentage, mean score, and standard deviation. The findings of this study show that: the majority of the respondents possess high extent of the ICT skills, majority have high extent of customer-service competency, and most librarians possess high extent of competency in interpersonal communication. It was concluded that these skills, though basic are a good platform that increases the effect of relevant information service delivery in the library. Abstract: The research was designed to unveil out how academic libraries have assisted institutions in bring up candidates to work in industrial capabilities towards the achievement of competitiveness and sustainable economic growth in society. This study was drawn from the extensive literature review and case studies to discuss the following economic value of accessing information using the library; innovation and services in academic libraries; initiatives, resources and activities that facilitate access to information in the library; FUTO Library and library responding to academic programmes. The following research questions helped ascertain what has made the academic libraries tick in this direction and to find answers to them; what status of people does the library have? To what extent material resources is provided and used by the library patrons? What ICT services are been offered by the library and of what purpose are they offered? What strategy development implied by the library to meet patron’s needs? What are the obstacles the library may encounter in the process to achieve competitiveness and sustainability to serve library patrons? Frequency and percentages were deployed for the study due is within the study environment area. Collection of Data was through the use of questionnaire developed by the researchers. Ninety-five copies of the questionnaires were distributed to staff of FUTO Library, out of which 85 were returned and found useful. Finding was analyzed and results ascertained. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

library, of the 18 internet ports available, only 6 are

internet. Having one IT officer based in MYSC
headquarters cannot help us.”
20. CONCLUSION
• Public librarians have a positive attitude towards ICTs and
only a few resist the use of ICTs.
• There is need to transform Botswana public libraries to suit

change the situation in public libraries.

• To establish the impact of technology on employee
motivation, job satisfaction and job productivity in
Botswana public libraries.
• To investigate librarians at all levels, not just the
head of stations only. This will give a clear picture
of the librarians’ readiness to adopt ICTs.
• To assess the status of ICT infrastructure in public
libraries.
