The chaparral biome is dominated by shrubs and found between 30 degrees north and south latitude, often on western coasts of continents. It has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Annual rainfall ranges from 30-50 cm mostly in winter. Common plants include blue oak, manzanita, chamise and cacti, which have adapted hard leaves to retain moisture. Many animals like birds, furry mammals, and reptiles have also adapted to the hot, dry conditions, with birds nesting on the ground and reptiles hunting at night to avoid heat. Examples include coyotes, lizards, mountain lions and rattlesnakes.
