Syed Qutb was an Egyptian author and intellectual. He was born in 1906 and memorized the Quran by age 10. He went on to teach and work for the Egyptian Ministry of Education. In the 1950s, he joined the Muslim Brotherhood and became an editor for their magazine. He was imprisoned from 1954-1964 for his political views and writings calling for Islamic revival. While in prison, he wrote some of his most influential works including Milestones and In the Shade of the Quran. He was executed in 1966 after being convicted again by a military court. His writings advocated for implementing Sharia law and an Islamic social system based on the era of the prophet Muhammad.
