India relies heavily on fossil fuels for its primary energy needs but is seeking to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources. India faces an energy trilemma of needing sufficient, cheap, and clean energy to power economic growth and reach underserved communities. Currently fossil fuels account for 66% of energy while renewable sources like solar, wind and hydro combined make up just 20%. India is pursuing alternative energy development through policies that support solar, wind, hydro and bioenergy to reduce reliance on imports and address issues of energy security, equity and environmental protection.
