4. Temperate Grassland Grasslands are large, rolling terrains of grasses, flowers and herbs and hundreds of types of plants. Along with that there are over 80 different types of animals, and 300 species of birds. Temperate grasslands are very open grassland with minimal trees. Located in colder climate regions, they receive less precipitation on average. During the winter, in some areas, the temperatures can be below 0 degrees fahrenheit but during the summer temperatures can be 90 degrees fahrenheit and above. The precipitation a temperate grassland in the northern hemisphere receives most of the time is in the form of snow, and it receives about 20-30 inches a year. Temperate grasslands are on every continent except for Antarctica. Here is a list of some of the locations of temperate grasslands: Australia - downsCentral North America - plains and prairies Hungary - pusztaNew Zealand - downsRussia - steppesSouth Africa - veldts Since temperate grasslands are located in colder climates and have low precipitation it makes it difficult for tall plants such as woody shrubs and trees to grow. The grasses that grow in this area are adapted to the cold temperatures drought and infrequent but possible fires. The way the grass is rooted reduces erosion and conservers water. Some examples of vegetation in temperate grasslands are: buffalo grass, cacti, sagebrush, perennial grasses, sunflowers, clovers, and wild indigos.Temperate grasslands inhabit many large herbivores. Some of these could be bison, gazelles, zebras, rhinoceroses, and wild horses. Carnivores such as lions and wolves are also found in temperate grasslands. Other animals you could find in a region like this include: deer, prairie dogs, mice, jack rabbits, skunks, coyotes, snakes, foxes, owls, badgers, blackbirds, grasshoppers, meadowlarks, sparrows, quails, and hawks.

Prairie -Similar temperate climates, moderate rainfall, and grasses, herbs, and shrubs, rather than trees(to temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands biome) -Tend to be in North America -Long recurrent droughts and occasional torrential rains. -Prairies in North America are usually split into three groups: wet, mesic, and dry: Wet: The soil is usually very moist most of the growing season, and has poor water drainage.(best type of farming soil) Mesic: Have good drainage, but have good soil during the growing season.(most often converted for agricultural usage, therefore it’s one of the more endangered types of prairie) Dry: Has somewhat wet to very dry soil during the growing season because of good drainage in the soil.(can be found on uplands or slopes)
