Bone Fractures By Katherine Colon
Compound Fracture X-ray image of a shoulder compound fracture. A fracture is a break in the bone or cartilage. It usually is a result of trauma.
A compound fracture is an injury in the skin where there is a break in the skin around a broken bone. The bone does not have to be through the skin for the injury to be called a compound fracture. In order for an injury to be classified as a compound fracture, the outside air (and dirt and bacteria) must be able to get to the fracture site.
Simple Fracture Simple fracture is an injury which there is no open skin wound X-ray is of a simple ulna fracture
A simple fracture is often compared to a compound fracture with the difference that compound fractures are sometimes more severe as the bone is usually through the skin. A simple fracture creates a break in the bone that doesn’t result in skin penetration. That does not necessarily mean less serious
Impacted Fracture impacted fracture in which bone fragments are pushed into each other X-ray is of a impacted fracture distal radius
An impacted fracture is a fracture in which the bone breaks into multiple fragments which are driven into each other. This type of fracture can present some challenges when it comes to setting the fracture and waiting for it to heal. Injuries resulting out of fall or collisions are mostly responsible for bone fractures. Although these are not all fractures it is just a few of many a person may want to look out for.
