Common injuries to the skeletal system include sprains, dislocations, and fractures. Sprains involve tearing or stretching of ligaments and result in swelling. Dislocations occur when the ends of bones are forced from their normal positions. Fractures happen when a bone breaks due to being unable to withstand force, and can be either closed fractures where the bone breaks without puncturing the skin, or open/compound fractures where the broken bone punctures through the skin.
