Bill Gates was born in 1955 in Seattle, Washington to an upper middle class family. He showed an early aptitude for computers and programming. He attended private Lakeside School where he met Paul Allen and was introduced to computer programming. Gates and Allen went on to form Microsoft and write the BASIC programming language for the Altair 8800, one of the first personal computers. Microsoft's success made Gates very wealthy and he has since donated over $30 billion to philanthropic causes through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
