  4. 4. 1999: Musk co-founded X.com, an online financial services and e-mail payment company. 2000: Merged with Confinity, which had a money transfer service called Paypal. 2001: The merged company focused on the PayPal service and was renamed PayPal. Musk , who owned 11.7% share at Paypal, was ousted from his role as CEO. 2002: PayPal was acquired by eBay for US$1.5 billion

ACHIEVEMENTS August 2006: SpaceX wins contract from NASA September 2008: Falcon 1 became the first privately devleoped liquid fuel rocket to achieve earth orbit December 2008: SpaceX was awarded a $1.6 billion NASA contract July 2009: Falcon 1 became first privately developed liquid fuel rocket to put a commercial sattelite in orbit December 2010: SpaceX became the first commercial company to successfully return a spacecraft from earth orbit June 2010: Falcon 9 reached orbit on its first attempt

INNOVATION AT SPACEX • They changed the engine, giving it the lowest possible cost choice of architecture, covering it with fireproof blankets, and improving its pump and injector. • They changed the rocket’s structure, giving it an inexpensive aluminum tank, and enabling it to stand un-pressurized on a launch pad in even extreme winds. • They updated its avionics with the latest technology. • They made a rocket that would be completely assembled in the SpaceX factory so that no army of workers would later be required at the launch site. • One of the greatest innovations at SpaceX is its “ability to make almost any part of the rocket in house.” This, he says, gives it “a great deal of bargaining power with suppliers.
