2. What is Poverty?
Poverty is the deprivation of things that determine standard
quality of life, such as food, shelter, clothes and safe drinking
water, but also the intangibles of the opportunity to learn and to
enjoy the respect as other citizens do.
Globally, 1.3 billion people live in extreme poverty, living off not
more than $1.25 a day. Poverty often results in health
abnormalities for the poor, unemployment due to lack of
education and other setbacks which causes the poor to be
trapped in a vicious poverty cycle, of which many are unable to
break free from.
3. So who is our Social Entrepreneur?
Bill Gates is the founder of the Microsoft
Conglomerate, the world’s largest PC software
company and is an American entrepreneur ,
philanthropist and investor.
He has already given more than $28 billion to
charitable initiatives , and has started his own
charitable organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation that predominantly focuses on
extreme poverty and healthcare. He has also
founded The Giving Pledge with Warren Buffett
whereby billionaires pledge to donate half of their
wealth to philanthrophy.
4. Gates’ Inspiration
Bill Gates believes money has no utility to
him beyond a certain point, but entirely in
building an organisation and getting the
resources out to the poorest in the world.
He finds himself certainly well taken care
of in terms of food and clothes. Therefore
he restlessly discusses with his wife about
how they are going to take the wealth they
are lucky enough to have and give it back
to society in a way that is impactful.
He has always sought definitive solutions
to problems, which he is convinced can
solve global diseases that plague the poor
such as polio.
5. Contributions
Besides being most known for popularising the
computer, Bill Gates has made countless
humanitarian contributions.
He founded the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation, which aims to enhance global
healthcare and eradicate poverty. From the
donations of Bill Gates and many other Social
entrepreneurs into foundation, people from
Nigeria, India and Haiti namely have benefitted.
The Foundation also sponsors scholarships for
aspiring university enrollees, which helps
further their studies without burdening them
financially. The Foundation is most prominent
for donating billions to crisis causes such as
during the 2004 Tsunami, USD3million was
donated to aid victims, while USD50million was
donated to UN efforts to jointly control the
Ebola epidemic.
6. Challenges and Resolutions
Bill Gates faces a very different and unorthodox
challenge than most people do, to continually be
America’s Richest person. Bill personally hates the
status of being most wealthy, because he credits his
fortune to the support of his family and God. His
struggle and dilemma on how his money should be
spent first arose when Microsoft broke through and
became a big hit. He was eventually inspired to help
the needy and decided to take a break from Microsoft
and became a Philanthropist.
Therefore as an extremely blessed man he makes sure
to put his fortune into good use. By establishing the
Bill Gates Foundation, donating a large portion of his
fortune into global heathcare and charitable causes,
and incorporating Microsoft Technologies into
medical machinery, he is now the world’s most
generous philanthropist.
7. Impact on Society
The technological advances of Microsoft
spearheaded by Bill Gates have had
significant impacts on the Global Stage, in
terms of change in human society.
Not only has Microsoft transformed the
exploitations of machines in the
Healthcare Industry, it has also provided
an platform for internet users to reach out
to the financially and socially marginalised
and less needy.
This has helped better amplify the needs
and complications faced by the poor and
sick. Ultimately, Bill Gates has somehow
changed the world simultaneously with a
single idea, and that has definitely
improved the living standards of many.
8. How have we learnt and how can
WE help
The generosity and sincerity of Bill Gates charitable acts have taught us as one becomes
more blessed, it is his duty to use the blessings to bless others. Essentially giving back to
the community that raised you. We have also learnt being rich is not everything we can
be in the world. We often perceive success as financial security and prosperity, but
success can come in the form of bringing help and smiles to people that need the
money more, just like how Bill Gates has done through his philanthropy work.
For one thing our wealth is nowhere near that to Bill Gates’, it is the heart and effort put
into helping the needy that matters, not the amount. We do not ought to donate
astronomical amounts to international humanitarian organisations, instead we can be
practical and start small.
More specifically, as students we can plan VIA projects, be more active in volunteer
work and work more closely with socially benefitiarial organisations in Singapore.
A small helping hand goes a long way, so no contribution is too small, as long as it
comes from a sincere heart.
10. Thank You and God Bless
Don’t compare yourself with
anyone in this world, if you do,
you’re insulting yourself.
