Implementing HDF5 in MATLAB
The MathWorks introduced MATLAB support for HDF5 in 2002 via three high-level functions: HDF5INFO, HDF5READ, and HDF5WRITE. These functions worked well for their purpose-providing simple interfaces to a complicated file format-but MATLAB users requested finer control over their HDF5 files and the HDF5 library. MATLAB 7.3 (R2006b) adds this precise level of support for version 1.6.5 of the HDF5 library via a close mapping of the HDF5 C API to MATLAB function calls.
This presentation will briefly introduce the earlier, high-level HDF5 interface (and its limitations) before showing in detail the low-level HDF5 functions. It will show how to interact with the HDF5 library and files using the thirteen classes of functions in MATLAB, which encapsulate groupings of functionality found in the HDF5 C API. But because MATLAB is itself a higher-level language than C, we will also present MATLAB's extensions and modifications of the HDF5 C API that make it more MATLAB-like, work with defined values, and perform ID and memory management.
Wrapping a library like HDF5 requires a great deal of effort and design, and we will briefly present a general-purpose mechanism for creating close mappings between library interfaces and an application like MATLAB. One of our goals in this presentation is to facilitate communication with The HDF Group about how The MathWorks builds our HDF5 interfaces in order to ease adoption of future versions of the HDF5 library in large, general-purpose applications.

One of the key challenges in working with real-time and streaming data is that the data format for capturing data is not necessarily the optimal format for ad hoc analytic queries. For example, Avro is a convenient and popular serialization service that is great for initially bringing data into HDFS. Avro has native integration with Flume and other tools that make it a good choice for landing data in Hadoop. But columnar file formats, such as Parquet and ORC, are much better optimized for ad hoc queries that aggregate over large number of similar rows.

One of the key challenges in working with real-time and streaming data is that the data format for capturing data is not necessarily the optimal format for ad hoc analytic queries. For example, Avro is a convenient and popular serialization service that is great for initially bringing data into HDFS. Avro has native integration with Flume and other tools that make it a good choice for landing data in Hadoop. But columnar file formats, such as Parquet and ORC, are much better optimized for ad hoc queries that aggregate over large number of similar rows.

A big challenge with having to build deep learning models was the high cost of training them. With the recent advent of distributed frameworks like Apache Flink, Apache Spark etc.. it’s faster to train Deep Learning models in parallel on modern platform architecture. In this talk, we’ll be showing how to use Apache Flink Streaming with the open source Deep Learning framework, DeepLearning4j to perform large scale deep learning model training. We will show a demo of a Recurrent Neural Net that is trained for language modeling and have it generate text.

Introduction to pig & pig latin
1. The data is loaded from a file into relation 'divs' with specified data types
2. A filter is applied to 'divs' to only keep records where the symbol field matches the regular expression 'CM.*'
3. The filtered relation is stored in 'startswithcm'
The script loads data from a file, applies a regular expression filter to select records where the symbol starts with "CM", and stores the filtered relation. It performs a basic extract, filter, and store workflow in Pig Latin.

In this talk of Hadoop User Group UK meeting, Aaron Kimball from Cloudera introduces Sqoop, the open source SQL-to-Hadoop tool. Sqoop helps users perform efficient imports of data from RDBMS sources to Hadoop's distributed file system, where it can be processed in concert with other data sources. Sqoop also allows users to export Hadoop-generated results back to an RDBMS for use with other data pipelines.
