Holistic Nursing Care Research shows that nursing students in the higher years of nursing studies  had a greater understanding of holistic care than students at a lower level. (Spikes) Nurses who have holistic interpretation of the term psychosomatic, have Master’s degree in nursing or higher (Bartol and Eakes, 1995)
Holism  First coined by Jan Smuts The determining factors in nature is the whole and not their constituent parts. This concept attracted several theorists including:  Hans Selye  (Physiology of stress)  Martha Rogers  ( Science of Unitary Human Beings)
Holistic Theory All living organism are seen as interacting  unified whole rather than mere sum of their parts. Disturbance in one part is  disturbance of the whole As nurses we must keep the whole person in mind  when assessing one part of the individual and how that part relates to all others.
Holistic Theory Health requires balance the forces of nature. Illness results from the disturbance of this balance Holistic health then involves the total person and total quality of lifestyle.
Holistic Health Care Includes Health promotion, education,  maintenance, illness prevention, restorative and rehab care. Requires sensitivity to individual, family, and cultural values.
Holistic Nursing Enhance the healing of the whole person from birth to death. ( Frisch et. Al.) We must recognize that our patients are biopsychosocial and spiritual beings connected to their family, community, culture, and environment. (AHNA)
Nursing Theories that touches on Holistic care management Henderson’s Definition of Nursing Conceptualized that the nurse’s role is to assist the individual healthy or sick gain independence in meeting 14 fundamental needs which includes food, water, sleeping, communication, air, worship, play, and etc.
Nightingale’s Environmental Theory Linked health with five environmental factors including air, water, drainage, cleanliness, and direct sunlight.
Roger’s Science of Unitary Human Beings States that human are dynamic energy fields in continuous exchange with environmental fields, both of which are infinite.
Healing Modalities Nurses with a holistic orientation often uses use  variety of self care practices in  their own lives. In the Philippine Nursing act, we are encourage to observe, the “therapeutic use of self”.
Four major groups of  Healing Modality Touch Mind-Body Aroma Transpersonal therapies *The use of any of these will require advance training  and familiarization of the scope of practice.
Touch Massage- Relaxes Muscles, Stimulates blood flow and immune system, relieve anxiety and thought to release body toxins. Reflexology- Based on the principle that the hands and feet contains points that corresponds to  different body structure. Acupressure- 657 points can be massaged.
Mind-Body Therapies Relaxation-  Used extensively to reduce high level of stress. Biofeedback- A technique to bring our body to our conscious control. Imagery-  Application of the conscious use of the power of the imagination with the intention of activating biological, psychological, or spiritual healing.
Mind-Body Therapies Meditation- Produces a state of deep peace combined with mental alertness. Music Therapy- The body has a fundamental vibrating pattern, musical vibration that is related closely to the body’s vibration can have a profound healing effect. (Guzzeta 2000) Humor and Laughter- Laughter as the best medicine.
Aromatherapy Clinical aromatherapy is the controlled use of essential oils for a specific outcomes. (Buckle 2000)
Transpersonal Therapy Non contact therapeutic touch- The channeling of one’s energy to another to potentiate healing. Intercessory Prayer- Prayer offered in favor of another.  In a case study, significant benefit on cardiac patient has been established using intercessory prayer. ( Abbot 2000)

Conclusions of an  interpretative-qualitative study on nurses who uses holistic care in their professional practice.
The awareness for the need to foster their growth and development. Holistic nurses who are open to  explore different modalities  of the healing-caring process are dedicated to their own growth and development. Holistic nurses dedicated to providing  balance and sacredness to their work are committed to congruency between personal needs and professional goals and ethics.
Holistic nurses care for themselves for caring for oneself is pre requisite for caring for others. The nurse client relationship is fundamental to the  healing caring  process of both the nurse and the client. Benefits to the clients’ continued health promotion and comfort care is integral to the healing-caring process.
Conclusion Gaining insight to the holistic care can assist in better professional preparation at any educational level.  By exploring the concepts on holistic care We continue to advance the discipline of NURSING
