What's New in Spring for Apache Kafka 2.0VMware Tanzu
SpringOne Platform 2017
Gary Russell, Pivotal
Discussion of important new features in this Spring abstraction over the Apache Kafka Java client. This update has improved threading and a new Consumer-aware listener.
Reactive frontends with RxJS and AngularVMware Tanzu
SpringOne Platform 2017
Sergi Almar, Independent
"Reactive programming has changed the way we develop modern applications. If you are a Java backend developer you might be already familiar with this paradigm and the new Spring 5 support. But what about the frontend? We want to build clean, testable, and scalable apps. The good news is that we can reuse the knowledge, the concepts are universal.
In this presentation we’ll introduce the fundamentals of RxJS and see how to manage data streams like UI events, async HTTP requests, WebSockets / SSE…in a uniform way. Let RxJS do the heavy lifting.
Angular embraces and makes heavy use of RxJS, we’ll see how to use them together with practical examples on common problems."
Phonegap/Cordova allows developers to write mobile apps using web technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It allows an app to be written once and deployed across multiple platforms by wrapping the code in a native container. Supported platforms include iOS, Android, Blackberry, Symbian and others. Phonegap uses a plugin architecture to enable access to native device functionality like the camera from JavaScript. Setting it up requires installing SDKs for target platforms and configuring a config.xml file. While it enables cross-platform development, the user experience may differ from true native apps and some consider alternative technologies.
Running Java Applications on Cloud FoundryVMware Tanzu
SpringOne Platform 2017
Ben Hale, Pivotal
From a developer's perspective, running a Java application on Cloud Foundry appears to consist of pushing a compiled artifact and getting a running process. From the platform's perspective though, there's a whole lot more going on. In this talk, the lead developer of the Java Buildpack will walk you through what goes on during application staging and what the buildpack can do for you. It will cover everything from dependency resolution to memory calculation and will even discuss how to integrate with marketplace services with no application configuration.
Mobile App Development with Ionic, React Native, and JHipster - Connect.Tech ...Matt Raible
Mobile development offers a lot of options. To develop native apps, you can use Java or Kotlin on Android. On iOS, you can use Objective C or Swift. There are other options, too. You can build hybrid mobile apps and Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). Hybrid mobile apps are those created with web technologies (HTML, JavaScript, and CSS) that look like native apps. PWAs have the ability to work offline and act like mobile apps.
In this talk, we'll explore a few different mobile technologies: PWAs, React Native, and Ionic (with Angular). You'll walk away with knowledge of how to build mobile + Spring Boot apps in minutes with JHipster.

"Will Git Be Around Forever? A List of Possible Successors" at UtrechtJUG🎤 Hanno Embregts 🎸
What source control software did you use in 2010? Possibly Git, if you were an early adopter or a Linux kernel committer. But chances are you were using Subversion, as this was the product of choice for the majority of the software developers. Ten years later, Git is the most popular product. Which makes me wonder: what will we use another ten years from now?
In this talk we will think about what features we want from our source control software in 2030. More speed? Better collaboration support? No merge conflicts ever?
I’ll also discuss a few products that have been published after Git emerged, including Plastic, Fossil and Pijul. I’ll talk about the extent to which they contain the features we so dearly desire and I’ll demonstrate a few typical use cases. To conclude, I’ll try to predict which one will be ‘the top dog’ in 2030 (all information is provided “as is”, no guarantees etc. etc.).
So attend this session if you’re excited about the future of version control and if you want to have a shot at beating even (!) the early adopters. Now if it turns out I was right, remember that you heard it here first.

Lattice: A Cloud-Native Platform for Your Spring ApplicationsMatt Stine
As presented at SpringOne2GX 2015 in Washington, DC.
Lattice is a cloud-native application platform that enables you to run your applications in containers like Docker, on your local machine via Vagrant. Lattice includes features like:
Cluster scheduling
HTTP load balancing
Log aggregation
Health management
Lattice does this by packaging a subset of the components found in the Cloud Foundry elastic runtime. The result is an open, single-tenant environment suitable for rapid application development, similar to Kubernetes and Mesos Applications developed using Lattice should migrate unchanged to full Cloud Foundry deployments.
Lattice can be used by Spring developers to spin up powerful micro-cloud environments on their desktops, and can be useful for developing and testing cloud-native application architectures. Lattice already has deep integration with Spring Cloud and Spring XD, and you’ll have the opportunity to see deep dives into both at this year’s SpringOne 2GX. This session will introduce the basics:
Installing Lattice
Lattice’s Architecture
How Lattice Differs from Cloud Foundry
How to Package and Run Your Spring Apps on Lattice
12 Factor, or Cloud Native Apps - What EXACTLY Does that Mean for Spring Deve...VMware Tanzu
SpringOne Platform 2016
Speaker: Thomas Gamble; Director, Development, Home Depot
Your team is excited about getting started with Spring Boot and Cloud Native, but you're not entirely sure you're ready to have the team continuously delivering to prod using cf push from their local desktops. The freedom of cloud native development can be very empowering for developers, but it shouldn't be something that terrifies the operations and security teams. We'll discuss how you can setup a fast and reliable deployment process, as well as some interesting things to thing about in the future. One of the most well known descriptions of these new paradigms is the Twelve Factor App (12factor.net), which describes elements of cloud native applications. Many of these needs are squarely met through the Spring Framework, others require support from other systems. In this session we will examine each of the twelve factors and present how Spring, and platforms such as Cloud Foundry satisfy them, and in some cases we’ll even suggest that responsibility should shift from Spring to platforms. At the conclusion you will understand what is needed for cloud‐native applications, why and how to deliver on those requirements.
Building a Data Exchange with Spring Cloud Data FlowVMware Tanzu
This document discusses building a data exchange using Spring Cloud Data Flow. It begins with an introduction to Spring Cloud Data Flow and what a data exchange is. It then discusses a case study of a company that built a data exchange to replace an aging legacy system. Key lessons learned from the case study include considerations around the underlying transport, total cost of ownership, keeping current with technologies, and planning for retirement of legacy systems.
An edge gateway is an essential piece of infrastructure for large scale cloud based services. This presentation details the purpose, benefits and use cases for an edge gateway to provide security, traffic management and cloud cross region resiliency. How a gateway can be used to enhance continuous deployment, and help testing of new service versions and get service insights and more are discussed. Philosophical and architectural approaches to what belongs in a gateway vs what should be in services will be discussed. Real examples of how gateway services, built on top of Netflix's Open source project, Zuul, are used in front of nearly all of Netflix's consumer facing traffic will show how gateway infrastructure is used in real highly available, massive scale services.

The document summarizes Matthew Quinn's presentation on "What AI Means For Your Product Strategy And What To Do About It" at Denver Startup Week 2023. The presentation discusses how generative AI could impact product strategies by potentially solving problems companies have ignored or allowing competitors to create new solutions. Quinn advises product teams to evaluate their strategies and roadmaps, ensure they understand user needs, and consider how AI may change the problems being addressed. He provides examples of how AI could influence product development for apps in home organization and solar sales. Quinn concludes by urging attendees not to ignore AI's potential impacts and to have hard conversations about emerging threats and opportunities.
Make the Right Thing the Obvious Thing at Cardinal Health 2023VMware Tanzu
This document discusses the evolution of internal developer platforms and defines what they are. It provides a timeline of how technologies like infrastructure as a service, public clouds, containers and Kubernetes have shaped developer platforms. The key aspects of an internal developer platform are described as providing application-centric abstractions, service level agreements, automated processes from code to production, consolidated monitoring and feedback. The document advocates that internal platforms should make the right choices obvious and easy for developers. It also introduces Backstage as an open source solution for building internal developer portals.

Platforms, Platform Engineering, & Platform as a ProductVMware Tanzu
This document discusses building platforms as products and reducing developer toil. It notes that platform engineering now encompasses PaaS and developer tools. A quote from Mercedes-Benz emphasizes building platforms for developers, not for the company itself. The document contrasts reactive, ticket-driven approaches with automated, self-service platforms and products. It discusses moving from considering platforms as a cost center to experts that drive business results. Finally, it provides questions to identify sources of developer toil, such as issues with workstation setup, running software locally, integration testing, committing changes, and release processes.
This document provides an overview of building cloud-ready applications in .NET.
