3. We offer you a wide range of benefits which you
can select on Benpal. Some of your benefits will
only be available for you to select in the annual
election window, which normally opens during May
each year.
Not all benefits are confined to the annual election
window, which means that you can select some of
them online at any time throughout the year. Other
benefits won’t even need to be selected online and
are automatically available to you as an employee
(‘Information Only’ benefits).
If the election window is not open for a certain
benefit, you are not able to select or view
information under the ‘Manage Your Benefits’
page until this benefit becomes available.

New Joiners and Lifestyle Events
Most benefits are open to you immediately as a new
employee. If you have a lifestyle event during the
year, you may also have the chance to review and
change some benefits that are normally only
available during the election window. A lifestyle event
is a change in circumstances such as marriage, a
promotion at work or moving home. A full list of
lifestyle events can be found on Benpal.
Saving Tax and/or National Insurance (NI)
Wehave designed these benefits to help you
get improved value out of your pay and benefits
package. By selecting some of the Flexible Benefits,
you can make significant tax and NI savings. The
savings you make depend on the tax and NI status
of the benefit (as determined by HMRC) and whether
you are a basic, higher, or additional rate taxpayer.
Where benefits are subject to Income Taxand/or NI,
they are declared on the P11D which will result in a
tax code adjustment.
Wehave put together the Key which will help you
understand the savings of each benefit throughout
this guide.
By choosing your own benefits you can tailor your
package to suit your lifestyle and family needs.
More information on all of these benefits will be
available online.

4. Salary Sacrifice is the
term used to describe a
way of giving up part of
your pay in return for an
additional benefit. You
agree to ‘sacrifice’ some
salary in return for a non-
cash benefit by giving up
your contractual right to
that salary.

What are the advantages of using
Salary Sacrifice?
The advantages of using Salary Sacrifice are:
• You save income tax on the amount
of your Salary Sacrifice.
• You save NI on the amount
of your Salary Sacrifice.
Theamount of the saving you will receive is
dependent on the levelof your earnings. The
rates of income tax and National Insurance are
subject to change from time to time and are
therefore dependent on the current rates in any
given tax year.
Are there any disadvantages
to Salary Sacrifice?
Most employees can make either income tax
and/or National Insurance savings using salary
sacrifice to pay for extra benefits. However,
sometimes it can result in reduced State
benefit entitlements:
• You should consider the impact of salary
sacrifice if you receive any means tested
benefit or tax credit, such as Working Tax
Credit or Child Tax Credits.
• You cannot use salary sacrifice if it will
reduce your salary below the National
Minimum Wage (currently £14,250.60
based on a 35 hour week).
Salary Sacrifice – How does this work?
Buying any extra benefits using salary sacrifice
is a simple way to make tax and/or National
Insurance savings.
How much tax can you save?
If you’re a basic rate taxpayer you can save tax
at a rate of 20% on salary sacrifice for some
benefits.
How much can you save in National
Insurance?
If you earn more than the primary threshold
for the National Insurance contributions
(£8,424 for the tax year 2018/19) you can save
National Insurance on the value of any salary
swapped for certain benefits. The amount you
save depends on your earnings.
You are automatically enrolled through
salary sacrifice unless you inform HR
that you do not wish to be.
You swap some of
your salary in return for
a benefit. Your salary is
reduced by the
cost of the benefit, so
you pay less tax and
National Insurance on
the remaining salary –
making the actual cost
of the benefit cheaper!

Get your hands on a brand new bicycle, safety equipment and accessories whilst saving tax and
NI on the total cost. Youcan choose from a wide range of bikes and accessories nationwide.
How it works: You choose the bike that you want from the wide range available through
Cyclescheme. You then lease the bike from the Company over an initial 12-month period

and NI costs. After 12 months any subsequent sale must be pursuant to a separate
agreement, entered into after the conclusion of the hire agreement.
Summary
• Spread the cost over 12 months via Salary Sacrifice and save tax and NI
• Choose the amount you need, between £100 and £1,000 in £50 increments
• You are advised to obtain specific insurance for your equipment and inform your insurer that we have
an interest in the equipment
• Eligibility is for employees who use a bicycle for at least 50% of the time as part of their journey to or
from work
• This benefit is provided by Cyclescheme
Action
Decide which model of bike you want to lease, once you know the total cost, enter the value and follow
online instructions. A Lease Agreement will be emailed to you for completion and return. Once this is
received, you will be sent your voucher which can be exchanged for the bike at your selected store.
