1) The document studied the aboveground and belowground biomass of pigeonpea grown in different cropping systems across three agro-ecologies in central Malawi. 2) It found that sole cropped pigeonpea and pigeonpea intercropped with groundnuts produced the highest above and belowground biomass, while pigeonpea intercropped with maize produced the lowest. 3) Root biomass was highest in the top 20 cm of soil, and fine pigeonpea roots dominated below 20 cm. Root to shoot ratios varied by agro-ecology and cropping system.
