The document discusses the career of a probation officer. It describes how the author wanted a career helping and improving the lives of others in the community. Through research, the author decided becoming a probation officer would allow them to accomplish their goals of helping offenders rehabilitate and get back on the right path by setting them up with counseling, education programs, drug testing, and acting as a mentor and supervisor as they reenter society. The author believes this career aligns with their desire to positively impact others and make the world a little bit better.

There are many different probation and officers typologies discussed below. 1)Based on the text and course notes below, what qualifications and/or education should be required for the job?
2)If you were a probation or parole officer, do you think you would fit any of these typologies? Explain your response.
Course notes:
Both adult and juvenile corrections have escalated during the last few decades. POs have assumed increased responsibilities and supervisory tasks in dealing with an increasingly diverse and dangerous clientele. In 2001 there were over 630,000
correctional personnel
working in corrections, with about 60 percent of these working in probation and parole services. The functions of probation and parole services are to supervise offenders, insure offender compliance with program goals and provisions, conduct routine alcohol/drug checks, provide networking services for employment assistance, direct offender-clients to proper treatment, counseling, and other forms of assistance, protect the community by detecting a client's program infractions and reporting them to judges or parole boards, assisting offenders in becoming integrated into their communities, and engaging in any useful rehabilitative enterprise that will improve offender-client skills.
The organization and administration of probation and parole services is most often within the scope of
departments of corrections
in most states. Services vary among the states, although there are common elements to all probation and parole services and programs. The complexity of
organizational structure
is highly dependent upon the nature of clientele supervised and their special needs. The
rehabilitative aim
of corrections has not been particularly successful. For this and other reasons, probation and parole departments have drawn extensive criticism from an increasingly discontent public. Criticisms have focused upon the
lack of PO skills and training
and the
ineffectiveness of job performance

AFTER READING THIS CHAPTER, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
· Summarize the philosophy and objectives of community-based corrections.
· Summarize delinquency prevention efforts and programs.
· Describe diversion and various diversion programs.
· Explain the goals and operation of day reporting centers.
· Summarize the effectiveness of community-based programs.
· Describe various disposition alternatives, including nominal dispositions.
Introduction
A youth writes on the walls in the junior high school locker room with a permanent marker. Another youth damages a neighbor’s professionally landscaped flower garden. Are these cases worthy of a prosecution in a juvenile court?
This chapter will examine a broad range of dispositional options available to juvenile courts. These options include nominal sanctions, diversion, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). These types of sanctions or dispositions are applied in cases where juveniles pose the least risk to others or are considered to be low-risk first-offenders who are unlikely to recidivate.
The first part of the chapter defines nominal dispositions. Nominal dispositions are typically verbal warnings issued by judges in lieu of any formal adjudication for either status offending or delinquency.
The second part of the chapter discusses how many juveniles are diverted from the juvenile justice system through deferred prosecution and diversion. Various types of diversion programs will be defined and discussed. These programs attempt to constructively intervene in the lives of youth and hold them accountable for their actions without the formality of juvenile court processing. The use of teen courts, youth courts, or peer courts, for example, is increasing not only in the United States but internationally. In 2005, there were over 1,000 teen courts in the United States, and by 2007, there were approximately 1,250 (Schneider, 2007). Teen courts will be described in detail, including their respective strengths, weaknesses, and applications, and several specific teen courts will be illustrated to show how the youth court process functions.
The next section of this chapter describes day reporting centers. Located in one’s community, day reporting centers offer an array of services and assistance to youth. The goals and functions of day reporting centers will be described, and several examples of day reporting centers will be provided, together with information on their success in treating and supervising juveniles involved in less-serious delinquent behavior.
The chapter concludes with an examination of ADR and restorative justice. These types of programs are known collectively as victim–offender mediation programs. These programs unite victims and youthful offenders for constructive purposes, and they offer youth the opportunity to face their victims and accept respon.

Cybersecurity and Risk ManagementRESPOND TO THIS DISCUSSION 2 IN 150 WORDS
The first article I found when I was browsing relating to risk management to cyber security paradigms will provide a useful backdrop for evaluating the current state of consumer protection in the cyber security environment. The initial paradigm for protecting ICT systems was based on a perimeter defense model. Security focused on tightly regulating the interchange of traffic between systems. Systems were kept closed by default and opened only by exception and under conditions of tight control. This approach to security matched operational norms at the time information systems were siloed these systems were not easily interoperable and thus did not generally exchange traffic. Under these conditions security risks were primarily internal rather than external.
The Second article I noticed regarding cybersecurity is the adoption of a security by design principle and certification frameworks may make it easier to neglect individual users of the Internet in the ongoing efforts to improve cybersecurity. If security concerns can be abated by focusing efforts upstream, then there may be a perception that there is less need to worry about what consumers are doing downstream.
The third article I found was the language used in many national cybersecurity strategies typically is robust, though non-specific. As the examples outlined above illustrate, there is a clear contemplation that individual consumers have a role to play in cybersecurity and possibly even public duties or responsibilities.
Not but not least in the fourth article, I found that the program provides information about how home Internet users and small businesses can protect themselves online. It uses social media, a Web site, email alerts, and partnerships to deliver tips and information about cyber threats.
RELATION BETWEEN CYBER SECURITY AND RISK MANAGEMENT
The many consumers do not fully understand cyber security issues and do not bother to follow good cyber hygiene, there is a question whether the current consumer base will value a security certification. As indicated, the EC’s proposal for a certification framework does not contemplate mandatory compliance. The expectation is that achieving certification will give ICT service providers a competitive advantage, that is, that consumers will value the certification and thus be willing to pay more for a product or service that is verified.
As an IT MANAGER, discuss how you will use the concepts discussed in the four articles in the management of IT risks within your company.
As an IT Manager, I have to know whether there are any cutting-edge dangers and after that want to order the type of risks and organize them design and execute the preparations which assist to restrict the risks.

Being A Probation Officer
1. Being A Probation Officer
As we know, probation and parole officers play a major role in shaping an offenders perception of
reality as well as changing their behavior. The question that many will ask is "is the role of the PO
that of a social worker or cop?" In my opinion, probation and parole officers have a huge weight on
their shoulders due to the caseloads that they receive. Since the recent police brutality cases the
mentality of an officer needs to change with the times. I believe that officers should lean more
towards being a social worker/cop because they should be able to gain common ground with citizens
while keeping their best interest and public safety at heart. In short, officers have to play multiple
roles depending upon the situation and the stipulations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe that there will always be a contrast in some aspect of probation and parole especially when
it comes to balancing roles and styles of supervision. "Many feel that the true "professional" finds a
way of integrating various role expectations, balancing them, and weighing the appropriateness of
various expressions of the roles. It is probable that the treatment–surveillance dichotomy will remain
forever."(Latessa, 2015, p.211). To conclude, officers can directly impact the outcome of an offender
on probation or parole by getting involved more with providing assistance where the offender lacks
the resources to do so. For example, rather than referrals to certain programs, offenders who are
considered high–risk can be given extensive counseling on drug and alcohol abuse which could help
them get the necessary attention they need. Another discretionary decision a PO can make in regards
to high–risk offenders is counseling on marital and family relationships, educational goals, and
employment strategies. Although probation and parole are supervisions that are prescribed during
different phases of the correctional experience they are both about rehabilitation which is the intent
and aim for the PO assigned to a

3. Effective Supervision Requires Establishing Different...
Effective supervision requires establishing different levels of supervision in order to know which
offenders need closer supervision from those who require less supervision (Alarid & Del Carmen,
2012). Generally, the supervision of offenders is categorized into three or four levels: maximum,
medium and minimum or maximum, high, standard, and administrative (Alarid & Del Carmen,
2012). The administrative level is for probationers or parolees who have committed minor offenses,
satisfied financial responsibilities, and been in compliance for two years (Alarid & Del Carmen,
2012). Probationers and parolees on the administrative level do not require a personal visit or
personal contact with the officer (Alarid & Del Carmen, 2012). Individuals on the administrative
level are required to call in and leave a voicemail or mail in a residence verification and
employment document (Alarid & Del Carmen, 2012).
A caseload is the number of individuals that one probation or parole officer is responsible for and
can supervise effectively (Alarid & Del Carmen, 2012). The number of people that one officer can
supervise varies from state to state (Alarid & Del Carmen, 2012). The more intensive the
supervision is the lower the officer's caseload (Alarid & Del Carmen, 2012). In Georgia, probation
and parole caseloads are classified under two risk levels of supervision–––standard and high
(Department of Community Supervision, n.d.). Individuals who have a sex crime conviction will be

5. Responsive Probation Officer
As a probation officer, the officer balanced approach between the use of evidence–base practice and
maintaining a responsive officer–offender working relationship is necessary. Several factors are at
play when considering the complexity of the job of an officer making the effectiveness of probation
supervision difficult to assess. In order for an officer to enforce the law and help offenders, the
officer must attain the following: have the skills of an officer, the availability of service such as
employment counseling or drug treatment, and the understanding needs and motives of the
probationer. Firstly, in order for an officer to enforce the law and help offenders the officer must
have the skills of an officer. The skill needed to being a probation/parole officer can be complex and
sometime even fluctuate with one another. For example, an officer must be assertive while maintain
an open mind. Other skills coincide with each other such as scrupulousness, the ability to cope ...

A probation officer have to establish a relationship with the offender and defines the roles of officer

The Probation Officer and Offender role has been widely examined, specifically in regards to the
effective management of risk (McNeill, 2009, NOMS 2010). Within this, it is recognised that the
relationship between these individuals is paramount to the effective management of risk and
offending behaviour. There have been numerous working practices introduced throughout the years
within the Probation Service to identify effective working practices including the Effective Practice
Principles and latterly, Skills for Effective Engagement, Development and Supervision known by
the acronym SEEDS (Rex & Hosking, 2013). Whilst these have greatly influenced the work being

9. The Juvenile System And Juvenile Corrections System
The juvenile corrections system dates back to the Greek and Roman times where children were
treated as adults when they committed offenses. In fact, children in trouble had no rights would
receive very harsh sentences. Moving forward, Europe also treated children as adult when it came to
criminal offenses. It wasn't until the 19th century that reforms began to be considered and used on
the behalf of children. In the US, just before this time in Boston, individuals began advocate for
children who were troubled. After this the movement had grown to what we have today which are
juvenile courts and numerous options for youth who are trouble (Chapter 2, 2000). In the US today,

Unconditional probation refers to the idea that the probationer's behavior is under observation and
their probation has terms that must be met but they are not officially monitored by a probation
officer. Meanwhile, conditional probation applies to those who have monitoring officially and has to
report into the local law enforcement. Last, special probation applies to probationers who have to
fulfill certain terms as a condition of their probation like complete school or a program for
rehabilituation depending on the offense. On the other hand, Intensive probation by nature is more
aggressive and is also known as JISP or Juvenile Intensive Supervised Probation. It requires more
face to face with the probation officers and the offender and treatment is provided. Some believe
that this option has its pros and cons. More so, it is beneficial that the offender is less likely to be

17. Parole Officers And The Prison System
The world we live is constantly changing whether we are on the streets or in the prison system.
Society doesn't understand that being in the prison is the almost the same as being on the streets. For
instance, there are inmates that sell drugs and rob and kill people and cover it up just as if
they were on the streets. There are correctional officers that work there, but they can't observe
everything that goes on in the prison system. This is one of the reasons that being a parole officer
would be a good job to have. The streets are already bad enough so taking some of the bad guys
off the streets can help get the community back under control. Parole officer not only help in the
streets the help in the court house. Parole officers can help the judge make decisions on what the
inmate should be given whether its freedom or jail time. Parole officers have allot of offenders to
keep in contact with when they have not had contact with the offender this becomes a violation
and their parole can be revoked. (https://pap.georgia.gov/parole–violations–revocations) In the
past few years I have seem allot of inmates in back in prison because they could not follow the
guidelines for parole and they were sent back to prison to finish their sentence. When an offender
applies for parole a form filled and sent to his counselor which sends it on to parole. When the
parole board looks at an inmate, they look at everything especially his disciplinary history this is

I decided to look for another job where I can be more involved with the community, and feel as if I
were giving back to them. I slowly started changing for better. I decided that I am going to become a
probation officer, my intention is plain and simple, I want to avoid a younger generation into
thinking that being in a gang is "cool." Working with children who have unfortunate lives, I have
learn to love and care for them more. There was one day that I told one of them, "If I could, I would
adopt you," and it made sense to me; I no longer have that dream of being married and having a

21. Career Of A Probation Officer
Career Exploration Paper When it came to planning for my future career, I knew that I wanted to be
successful in helping others around me and making the world a positive place. I wanted to be a part
of making the world a better place and help the people in it with working to improve themselves.
Through research, I came to the conclusion that becoming a probation officer would be a more
suitable career for me and the goals I want to accomplish. Probation officers serve as supervisors
and mentors for offenders who are trying to get back on their feet. When a convicted offender is
released on probation, the officers have to help set up counseling appointments, educational
programs, employment opportunities, and housing. The duty as a probation officer is to make sure
an offender attends any counseling, job training, and work to get them involved in social activities
needed with their rehabilitation. An interesting fact about a probation officer is that they spend most
of their time doing paperwork. Although probation officers visit their clients, and do regular drug
test on them, they spend most of the time doing paper work and documenting their client's progress.
You would have to have a big passion for helping others because the job can seem boring to people
who do not have a desire to help people. The officers monitor offenders to prevent them from
committing new crimes. This helps to try and make the world a better place. Probation officers are

Unethical Behaviors of Probation and Parole Officers
What is Probation and Parole?
The duties of a probation and parole officer are pretty universal nationwide and an officer must
carry a high ethical standard in order to be successful at the job as well as values such as honesty,
fairness, and consideration of others. Probation is an alternative that permits the offender to live
among society with certain restrictions that are ordered by the courts. When prisons are
overcrowded, an offender can be granted parole and they are given the opportunity to finish their
sentence and live in society, with restrictions. Probation and parole officers both strive for the same
goals: aid in rehabilitation, supervise, and protect the community as well ... Show more content on

Over a fifteen year time period, Augustus helped rehabilitate 1,800 offenders, mostly juveniles, and
assisted them with housing, employment, and education and also made monthly reports to the courts
about each offender's progress and drew out a plan in which he created that would help each
offender to their specific needs. Augustus vision to rehabilitate offenders became the foundation of
our modern day probation programs.
A parole system was first developed in the 19th century when people believed in reformation instead
of incarceration. This system allowed an offender who was already serving time, to be released into
society, and promise to live as a law abiding citizen. Alexander Maconochie is the person credited to
the development of this system. He believed that prisoners should be rewarded for their good
behavior and was able to try his "mark system" at the Norfolk Island facility off the coast of
Australia. Prisoners earned points if they completed their duties and if they accumulated enough
marks, they were allowed to leave the prison with the promise that they would abide by society's
rules and laws. Walter Crofton, administrator of the Irish Prison System in 1854, followed
Maconcohie's system and added other requirements such as finding employment and reporting

37. Probation Officers Should Be Legal
Probation officers wear many different hats; some are those that they never dreamed about when
becoming an officer of the court. Probation officers are the offenders' friend, confidant, mental
health counselor or even a parent to an offender that may be just turning 18, who has not had a
parent influence. This feeling of someone looking out for the offender may make the offender feel
more comfortable and willing to work with the officer. However, the probation officer needs to be
able to establish the relationship but keep it more of a professional relationship so the offender does
not become confused. Setting the standards and expectations with the offender may allow the
offender to understand the limits and expectations. Often times a probation officer needs to be able
to sit down and speak to their offender on a personal level gaining the trust and respect of them.
Probation is defined as a suspension of a jail sentence, allowing the convicted person to remain
within the community (FindLaw, 2015). Sometimes there is a misunderstanding the difference
between probation and parole. Probation allows the offender to not serve any jail time, while parole
is a release from prison on conditions allowing the offender to complete their sentence within the
community. Probation has three primary goals to rehabilitate the offender, protect society from
further criminal conduct by the offender, and to protect the rights of victims (Probation, 2015).

57. The Pros And Cons Of Probation Officers
There are several steps to the criminal justice system, one of them is Probation; a program where the
offender's freedom is limited; usually they have a curfew, and have limits on the things they do.
Probations Officers are a huge factor in getting the juvenile offender back on the right track
following their sentence. One of the problems with probation is that rather than helping the
offenders, sometimes it can hurt them. Some scholars argue that the officers do not take the
juveniles, specifically females, seriously when it comes to referring them to receive mental health
treatment. In contrast, other scholars argue that Probation Officers are the key to connecting the
offenders with mental health care. I will begin by talking about how the gender of the juvenile
contributes to the unjust treatment of juveniles on probation, then I will talk about probation officers
as "the problem," and lastly I will talk about a solution. I will conclude by stating my research
question and making some contributions as to what can be done to build a stronger relationship
between the offenders and the probation officers.
Gender plays a big role in whether or not the juvenile offenders get the treatment they need. Often
female offenders are misunderstood or not taken seriously because they are stereotyped as criers,
liars, and manipulators. If and when these girls do get treatment for mental health care, often it is not
the correct one. In the Gaarder, Rodriguez, and Zats (2004) article

How does the ability to conduct legal searches differ between the police officer, probation officer,
and corrections officer in the performance of their duties? There are vast and simiular reasons that
all of these officers have to conduct legal searches.
For police officers as we learned in several chapters, there are issues that come with their abilities to
conduct legal searches, for example a police officer cannot just approach someone on their front
porch and demand to enter their home to search for illegal substances or arms etc. However, if one
was driving by your home and seen you in your garage with what appeared to be a meth lab or
marijuana grow operation then they can stop to search as it would be a duty of theirs to protect the
community. A search where one person would feel that they have a reasonable expectation of
privacy cannot happen without a warrant. The police officers job abilities can ... Show more content

Everyone makes mistakes. Unfortunately, often times those mistakes lead individuals to become
incarcerated. I want to be in law enforcement because I have seen how crime can have a negative
impact on communities. Growing up in a St. Petersburg, Florida, I have seen how drug dealers and
crime harmed communities, and affected families. I believe that receiving my Bachelors of Science
degree in Interdisciplinary Studies will equip me with the tools that I need to be a successful law
enforcement officer. Although, there are many negatives that surround the current state of law
enforcement, I am optimistic that agencies will improve their images by putting more emphasis on
community policing. In this paper, I will be exploring why individuals commit ... Show more

For example, teenagers who are peer pressured to join gangs often have to commit crimes in order to
be a part of those gangs. If young people don't have any guidance at home or even if they do, they
are pressured in school to be popular. In order to be popular, often times they have to be initiated to
known gangs. The leaders of these gains compel teenagers to commit burglaries, steal cars, utilize
drugs and participate in other criminal activities. For some kids who have never received the
attention and love that a kid needs at home, they will be more likely to join gangs. According to
Hendricks, according to international and national trends, substance use is a major social problem
among adolescents (Degenhardt, Whiteford, & Hall, 2014; Toumbourou et al., 2014; Whiteford et

drugs can lead to adolescents committing horrendous crimes, by impairing their minds. Many of
these drugs that adolescents are using, they don't know the elements that make up these drugs.
Crimes are typically committed when people act on impulse, instead of thinking their thoughts

63. The Bureaucratic System Of Public Administration
Introduction "How Kristin Died" is a prime example of one of the many issues inherent within the
bureaucratic system and the misfortunes that can stem from it. This case forever changed the lives of
those involved and unfortunately resulted in the death of Kristin Lardner, a 21 year–old college
student, at the hands of Michael Cartier, her estranged boyfriend. It is important to public
administration because public administration contains many issues of hierarchy and redundancy.
Public administration also has the power to mold the environments where it is present in many
ways. This case is strongly related to organizational theory, the relationship organizations have with
the environment and how individuals behave within. When presented, the information within the
case surrounding the details of Kristin's death proves that had the bureaucracies involved taken the
necessary preventative measures, this tragedy may not have occurred. The main individuals of this
case include: Kristin Lardner, Michael Cartier, Tom Case and Rose Ryan. Although others were
involved, these individuals had the most influence within the case. Although Lardner was originally
from Washington, DC, this event takes place in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attends college in
the early 1990's. History Cartier showed signs of trouble very early on. As a child it is stated that he
would light matches behind a gas stove, and even mutilated his pet rabbit. Due to these acts,

A P/P officer have to have a number of qualities in order to function in a dual–role relationship. By

Shannon met with several of Janet's clients. After meeting with clients, she discovered a pattern in
which the clients would report that they have not seen Janet in 2 to 3 months. However, the case
files reflected face–to–face contact with all of her clients, despite what her clients stated. When
Shannon investigated further, she found that the client notes were all at the same day and time,

Again in the paperwork there was some wrong information which proves that they don't have a copy
of that paperwork. But the clients have right to know their problem, strengths, treatment, procedures
and also cost of services. If they were allowed to see that Janet couldn't note down false information
on them.
3. What, if any, client rights were violated? Janet was noting down false information on her clients.
According to her paperwork she was communicating regularly with her clients but her clients said
opposite. It proves that the right of clients of knowing about their treatment was violated and at the
same time right of regular communication was also violated. Again the clients weren't able to get
record that Janet maintained on their problem. If they could get the paperwork they would be able to
see that Janet were noting down false information on them. Some clients needed referrals but they
hadn't been referred. So they were not getting help which they not only needed.
4. How you would use the ethical decision–making model to address or resolve the situation? I
would first try to understand the reasons for which Janet was not conducting a face–to–face
communication with her clients and noting down information on them which were not true. Then I
would identify and understand the standards and codes which are related this issue. Then I would

Evaluating the Psycholegal Abilities of Young Offenders With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
Lovemithe Bastien
Valencia College
Author Note
[Include any grant/funding information and a complete correspondence address.]
Abstract
A young offender with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder can be very vulnerable whether we realize it
or not. The level of their comprehension can be lower than others without the disorder and can cause
them to struggle with things that are simple to us like complying with law authority during an arrest.
With that being said, Kaitlyn McLachlan, Ronald Roesch, Jodi L. Viljoen and Kevin S. Douglas did
a study on young offenders with FASD in hopes to raise awareness of the necessity to aid the
individuals. The research included reliable methods that would prove their intellectual and academic
levels were highly lower than individuals without FASD. The four hypothesized that the young
offenders with FASD would show more limited skills than the young offenders without FASD. Their
results showed the young offenders with FASD scored significantly lower than the other young
offenders, making their hypothesis correct. McLachlan, Roesch, Viljoen and Douglas proved that it
would be significant to mark individuals with FASD as ones who would highly benefit from
assistance.

75. Probation Is A Sentence That Is Given To Offenders Instead
Probation is a sentence that is given to offenders instead of jail. Probation comes in different forms
and many different conditions; therefore, if you were unable to meet those conditions you may be
sent to jail. Probation is mostly used for first time offenders, or for those charged with minor crimes.
When given probation you must meet with an assigned probation officer on a regular basis.
Probation dates back to English common law. The first probation officer was recognized by the
Supreme Court in 1841. Before parole and probation punishments were very harsh, and often lead to
death. Over time we have developed these two systems to punish individuals, but at the same time
help them learn how to live in the current society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the divisions working together they've made a huge difference in fixing what was once a
broken system.
John Augustus was the father of probation. His idea was to change the behavior of offenders. He
believed that if offenders get a second chance, they should have to learn new behaviors; however,
that would require help trough probation officers. Parole given to an individual when are eligible to
parole. This happens after the prisoner receives a minimum or maximum sentence; however, they
become eligible with the decision of the parole board. The board decides whether or not to put them
on parole after a consideration hearing. Just like probation, this is a program that focuses on the
rehabilitation of offenders. Parole was first introduced in the United States by Brockway Zebulon in
1876 as a way to reduce overcrowding in jails. He also saw this as way to rehabilitate offenders. He
believed this was the best way to have offenders change their behavior for the better. This would
give an opportunity for offenders to get out of jail, and be rehabilitated. The parole board decides
when the parole period will happen. If the offender violates their parole they will be sent back in jail
for the rest of their sentence. The cost for probation is a lot larger than for parole. For probation the
average year cost is about $29,000 a year. That comes out to be roughly $79 a day. While, for

Throughout our study of community corrections this semester a reoccurring issues has appeared
over and over. When discussing probation and when discussing parole the issue of inadequate
officer training has reared its ugly head and been calculated into the current, failing, state of
community corrections. It has become evident that probation and parole officers require more
intensive training on how to work effectively with probationers and parolees. The question of how
that should be done has come up and the answer has repeatedly been "more education". The idea of
more education sounds like a simple fix, but in reality it requires a lot of funding to send each

They are also not educated about how to motivate an offender to want to become habilitated or
rehabilitated. Knowledge in these areas of community corrections is critical in preparing officers for
dealing with probationers or parolees appropriately. Only one aspect of the one hundred and sixty
hour training course can be related to helping probationers or parolees, which is the counseling
section. The term counseling is very broad and does not give much explanation as to what officers
are learning, but even if officers are learning about the mental health issues that probationers face,
they are only spending a maximum of twenty hours learning about counseling. Not all of the
information that is important for officers to know can be fit into the amount of time that is allotted
for counseling. Counseling also spans over other topics that officers need to know about, which
shortens the amount of time officers actually spend learning about specialized topics. The
information does not give any indication that the entire one hundred and sixty hours is spent evenly
distributed between the subjects listed, meaning that the amount of time actually given to learning
about offenders, human psychology and sociology, is most likely under twenty hours. The twenty
hours of annual training that must be completed after the original training is such a short amount of
time that the issue of counseling may not be addressed at all. The current system for training officers
