Burrhus Frederic Skinner was an American psychologist born in 1904 who is known for his emphasis on behaviorism. He is best known for inventing the Skinner Box to study operant conditioning. Some of his major works included The Behavior of Organisms and Beyond Freedom and Dignity. Skinner died in 1990 at the age of 86. Behaviorism can be applied in the classroom to control student behavior through reinforcement schedules, contingency contracting, prompting, modeling appropriate behavior, and using punishment.
