Post-Conference presentation at the Predictive Modeling Summit held in Washington DC.
This talk focuses on applying behavioral economic principles to devise behavioral interventions and simulating such behavioral interventions using predictive modeling and agent-based simulation tools to provide managed care professionals and healthcare policy makers with a unique set of tools and techniques to address some of the critical issues of user adoption and controlling healthcare costs. In this talk, I examine the basic principles of behavioral economics, how it can be applied to devise behavioral interventions in the managed care area, and how to develop simulation models to understand the implications before testing and rolling out these interventions.
This presentation introduces viewers to concepts in behavioral economics as they relate to healthcare services and decision-making. I discuss a number of heuristics and biases that impact decisions and perceptions, using specific examples from healthcare literature.
Guideline on patient safety and well being in clinical trialsTrialJoin
Patient safety is and should be the number one priority in clinical research. Human participants in a clinical trial are necessary in order to improve and develop new therapies for certain conditions and advance the understanding of how a condition can be treated. Such medical advancements wouldn’t be possible without human subjects as participants. However, even though we all know the importance of clinical trials in the advancement of medicine, most people still have some misconceptions regarding this topic.
The feeling of being treated as a ‘’guinea pig’’ and fear of potential risks and side effects are still common among patients who suffer from a certain condition. Such misinformation and misconceptions regarding clinical trials can unnecessarily prevent patients from finding a potential cure or relief, and can also decrease the number of enrolled patients in studies.
In order to clarify these misunderstandings, we’ve decided to tell you everything there is to know about patient safety in clinical trials. We hope that with this information we can help you to better understand patient safety in clinical trials so that you gain more insight and start considering clinical trials as valid options that can help you improve any condition.
Analysis of what patient services proposed by pharma companies should be. This document explains: 1. why patient centricity is essential? - 2. how to craft a patient-centric strategy? - 3. How to implement patient-centric initiatives?
This is a deck I created to frame out my vision about healthcare and used in my job search. This is the exciting space in healthcare right now - communications, segmentation, data mining.
Bayesian estimations of strong toxic signals [compatibility mode]Bhaswat Chakraborty
“Signals” of adverse drug reactions are, according to WHO, “reported information on a possible causal relationship between an adverse event and a drug, the relationship being unknown or incompletely documented previously. Usually more than a single report is required to detect a signal, depending on the seriousness of the event and the quality of the information.” Once a signal is detected, one can then analyze and confirm it. In detecting signals from large adverse drug reaction (ADR) databases, however, one has to use a procedure that is sensitive (low false negativity) and specific (high true positivity) for the purpose. A whole range of statistical methods have been applied for data mining and signal detection (SD) in pharmacovigilance (PV). My talk would be on Bayesian methods for SD.
The US FDA uses a Bayesian data mining approach developed by William DuMouchel called multi-item gamma poisson shrinker (MGPS). WHO also uses a Bayesian method (Andrew Bate) based on a Bayesian confidence propagation neural network (BCPNN). These estimates provide shrinkage towards zero of the observed to expected number of ADRs, e.g., the empirical Bayesian geometric mean (EBGM) or information component (IC). These Bayesian estimators are robust measures of ADR-drug association.
Bayesian approaches are intuitively appealing when very small numbers are involved and where there is a need of continuous reassessment of probability of association with the acquisition of new data over time. Bayesian estimates such as EBGM are close to null hypothesis of independence even when the data is scarce. For example, if the EBGM is 5 for a drug-renal toxicity combination, then this drug-event combination occurred, on an average, 5 times more frequently than expected in the data set. Several examples Bayesian SD will be given from current research projects.
This presentation looks at behavioural nudges used by different businesses. Nudges are interventions that preserve freedom of choice but that nonetheless influence people’s decisions. Our decisions are often heavily affected by behavioural biases, instinctively we favour the default option
Choices are contextual and we are also deeply affected by social norms.

How to Evaluate Emerging Healthcare Technology with Innovative AnalyticsHealth Catalyst
As healthcare systems are pressured to cut costs and still provide high-quality care, they will need to look across the care continuum for answers, reduce variation in care, and look to emerging technologies. This article walks through how to evaluate the safety and effectiveness and of emerging healthcare technology and prioritize high-impact improvement projects using a robust data analytics platform. Topics covered include:
The importance of identifying variation in innovation.
Ways to improve outcomes and decrease costs.
The value of an analytics platform.
The reliable information that produce sparks for innovation.
Identifying and evaluating emerging healthcare technology.
Knowing what data to use.

2023 Healthcare Trends: What Leaders Need to Know about the Latest Emerging M...Health Catalyst
The convergence of several significant emerging market and policy trends, namely high inflation, record-low unemployment, a divided Congress, and the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency, has created a unique set of challenges for healthcare organizations. To discuss these trends and their impact on key healthcare issues, such as patient engagement, the migration to value-based care, analytics adoption, the use of alternative care sites, and patient privacy, Health Catalyst's General Counsel, Dan Orenstein, and Vice President of Market Insights, Tim Zenger, will be hosting a discussion. This convergence of trends poses significant challenges for healthcare organizations, and it is important for them to be prepared to address these challenges effectively.
Well-trained clinical research professionals are in high demand. The tremendous increase in medical technology and information in the last decade has resulted in an explosion of potential new drugs, devices and biologics that must be tested before being released for use by the public. The profession is constantly challenged to improve and streamline the clinical research programs in order to shorten the development timelines and control the cost for new product development

6 Steps for Implementing Successful Performance Improvement Initiatives in He...Health Catalyst
A systematic approach to performance improvement initiative includes three components: analytics, content, and deployment. Taking six steps will help an organization to effectively cover all three components of success. Step 1: Integrate performance improvement into your strategic objectives. Step 2: Use analytics to unlock data and identity areas of opportunity. Step 3: Prioritize programs using a combination of analytics and a deployment system. Step 4: Define the performance improvement program’s permanent teams. Step 5: Use a content system to define program outcomes and define interventions. Step 6: Estimate the ROI.
