Sub Topic: Types of Mattresses
MATTRESSES
 Mattresses were stuffed and filled with hair,
hair and wool or flock
 Good hair expensive but flock is cheap and
becomes lumpy
 All mattresses are absorbent and liable to
attack by moth and other pests
 They require frequent turning when in use
and remaking every few years and these
mattresses have in many places been
replaced by interior sprung, latex or plastic
foam ones
TYPES
 Interior Sprung Mattresses
 Rubber Mattresses
 Plastic Matresses
 Interior Sprung Mattresses are made of a
continuous wire construction or of coiled
springs of tempered wire very firmly held in
parts of the mattresses giving even support
to the body while lying on them
 The springs are padded with layers of cotton
waste, coiled hair, rubber or plastic foam
and covered with a strong ticking
 They vary in depth (12-22 cm), quality and
price according to the number and gauge of
springs, types of padding and quality of
covering
 These are absorbent and liable to attack by
moth and other pests but are comfortable
and lasts for many years
 Rubber Mattresses are made from latex foam
 The latex which has been previously whisked
with a chemical setting agent is poured into the
heated moulds where it is shaped, set,
vulcanized, without losing any of its tiny air cells
 The mattress may be about 10cm deep and
has a right and wrong side due to the shape of
the moulds and so should not be turned
 As they are non-absorbent and return to their
original shape after being lain on, they require
no turning
 They do not make dust or fluff and are not liable
to attack by moths
 Plastic Mattresses are made from foam
plastic, generally of the polyethylene type
 Foam plastic mattresses are non-absorbent,
make no dust or fluff and are not liable to
attack by moth or other pests
 There is a danger that when foam rubber
and foam plastic mattresses catch fire they
produce fumes which are toxic
 The mattresses have a Proban – treated
100% cotton cover which is flame proof as
well as polythene cover
Sub Topic – Types of Beds
 Zed – beds have a base of stretched springs which
can be folded up into a narrow rectangular shape,
enclosing a thin mattresses. They can be easily
moved and stored
 Sofa beds provide extra seating by day and a bed by
night. A wooden slatted base combined with interior
sprung mattress is the most satisfactory type
 Foldaway beds When rooms are let more than once
in 24 hours, for meetings by day and as a bedroom
at night, a foldaway bed may mean that staff are not
involved in heavy or time-consuming tasks in
converting the room. It is folded into the wall giving
the appearance of a wardrobe
