There are three levels of technology development - individual ideas, verified ideas through experimentation, and embodied knowledge in products/services. Technology development is socially constructed and depends on opportunity, appropriability, transferability, and resources. Firms are viewed as open systems that interface with customers, competitors, and other environmental factors. The management of technology focuses on developing capabilities and deploying them in markets to accomplish organizational goals.
