ICT are transforming Cuban higher education towards the adoption of blended-learning and distance learning. This dissertation focuses on investigating the effectiveness of using social software to support collaborative learning in a Cuban university. Five studies were conducted within three phases that included diagnostic, integration and validation of the social software that was used to support collaborative learning. A didactic model was created to integrate social software within Cuban teaching and learning in higher education. Social Network Analysis and content analysis were used to evaluate the effectiveness of social software to support students' learning through their collaborative learning relationships and through their posts in wiki pages and online discussions. Statistical analysis was used to evaluate students' self-efficacy as a measure of their achievements in social software-supported collaborative learning. The findings confirmed social software’s suitability to support collaborative learning, as it increased collaborative learning's effectiveness, compared to face-to-face collaborative learning. Specific findings were revealed for the use of wikis and online discussions within teaching and learning, which are extendable to other social software tools. A didactic model to integrate social software in Cuban teaching and learning, as well as a framework to analyse students' interactions, were used for first time and validated to extend its use among Cuban university stakeholders.Technology & Education

AI will likely be used more in the future to help administrators, teachers, and students.

SKERG Seminar on Aug 18, 2015 titled, "Designing and Evaluating a Contextual Mobile Application to Support Situated Learning" by Dr. Abeer Ali Alnuaim, the Vice Chair of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Department at KSU.
Synopsis: This research emerged from seeking to identify ways of getting Human-Computer Interaction Design students into real world environments, similar to those in which they will eventually be designing, thus maximising their ability to identify opportunities for innovation. In helping students learn how to become proficient and innovative designers and developers, it is crucial that their ‘out of the classroom’ experience of the environments in which their designs will be used, augments and extends in-class learning. The aim of this research is to investigate the process of designing a mobile learning application in a blended learning model. This app was designed to support students in a design task and to develop their independent learning and critical thinking skills, as part of their Human-Computer Interaction coursework. It explores the challenges in implementing and deploying such an app in the learning context. A number of evaluations were conducted to assess the design, usability and effectiveness of the app. Promising results show that the app has helped students in developing critical skills for designing technology. However, there were a number of concerns discovered regarding the context of use of a mobile device, including usability of interface elements and acceptability of using the app in a public place.

The purpose of this research proposal is to identify organizational principles for the development of online learning curriculum in higher education. This study will address the following research questions: Can educational psychology learning theories (such as cognitive load theory) be used to inform usability-testing methods? Can usability-testing methods be used to discover basic principles of online learning curricular organization? Are there basic principles of online learning curricular organization that can improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction of learning in online environments? While there are many theoretical directions one could take to examine the interface of instructional design and technology, this research proposal will use the lens of the cognitive load theory. This study will use the cognitive walkthrough method as established by usability testing standards. Cognitive walkthroughs use an explicitly detailed procedure to simulate a user’s problem solving process at each step through the dialogue, checking if the simulated user’s goals and memory content can be assumed to lead to the next correct action. Participants will be asked to complete a series of tasks in an online learning environment formulated to compare different methods of organization. This study has the potential to make significant contributions to the field of educational psychology and online education by providing substantive empirical data that sheds light on potential principles that improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of Web-based education.

This app was designed to support students in a design task and to develop their independent learning and critical thinking skills, as part of their Human-Computer Interaction coursework. It explores the challenges in implementing and deploying such an app in the learning context. A number of evaluations were conducted to assess the design, usability and effectiveness of the app. Promising results show that the app has helped students in developing critical skills for designing technology. However, there were a number of concerns discovered regarding the context of use of a mobile device, including usability of interface elements and acceptability of using the app in a public place.

- 41.1% of teachers are not confident or only beginning to feel confident using ICT.

- The top barriers to successful ICT implementation are access to equipment, time, and teacher ICT skills.

The purpose of this research proposal is to identify organizational principles for the development of online learning curriculum in higher education. This study will address the following research questions: Can educational psychology learning theories (such as cognitive load theory) be used to inform usability-testing methods? Can usability-testing methods be used to discover basic principles of online learning curricular organization? Are there basic principles of online learning curricular organization that can improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and user satisfaction of learning in online environments? While there are many theoretical directions one could take to examine the interface of instructional design and technology, this research proposal will use the lens of the cognitive load theory. This study will use the cognitive walkthrough method as established by usability testing standards. Cognitive walkthroughs use an explicitly detailed procedure to simulate a user’s problem solving process at each step through the dialogue, checking if the simulated user’s goals and memory content can be assumed to lead to the next correct action. Participants will be asked to complete a series of tasks in an online learning environment formulated to compare different methods of organization. This study has the potential to make significant contributions to the field of educational psychology and online education by providing substantive empirical data that sheds light on potential principles that improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of Web-based education.

Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions.
