This study assessed the applicability of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to predict total body water (TBW) in 16 underweight and 25 normal-weight cancer patients, compared to TBW measured by deuterium dilution. BIA provided a strong prediction of TBW in normal-weight patients but significantly overestimated TBW in underweight patients. Prediction formulas developed for normal-weight individuals also overestimated TBW when applied to underweight patients. Therefore, BIA may not accurately predict TBW in underweight cancer patients using formulas developed for normal-weight subjects.
