Literacy refers to the ability to read for knowledge, write coherently, and think critically about the written word. This might be something that most of us usually take for granted. However, 775 million adults lack minimum literacy skills. One in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women. 60.7 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out. These staggering figures lead us to think about why illiteracy rates in the world are so high. We want to raise awareness of this growing problem and also what is currently being done as well as what can be done to alleviate the problem. Supporters

2. • Community projects are held in remote mountain villages of northern
Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and the steppes of Mongolia.

initiated and requires community participation.

3. •Greg Mortenson is appreciative of the care he received from the villagers of Korphe
during a mountain climbing expedition in 1993
•Greg Mortenson said he would build a school for the village after he noticed local
students attending school in an outdoor location and writing out their lessons in the
dirt.
•Dr. Hoerni provided funding for the first two projects, a bridge over the Braldu River
and a school in Korphe village.
•In 1996, Hoerni established Central Asia Institute, and appointed Mortenson as
director.
•CAI’s mission is to promote and provide community-based education and literacy
programs, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

4. • CAI has done a handful of projects in Mongolia ,on rural health
education, and in Kyrgyzstan related to teacher-training scholarships.
• Since 1996, CAI has supported over 250 community initiated educational
and service projects.
• Since 2005, CAI has honed on rural education and literacy, especially for
females.
• In recent years, CAI has increased efforts to improve the quality of
education, support teacher training and help motivated students achieve
their education goals with higher education.

5. • As of 2010, CAI reports it has established or significantly supported 171
schools in rural and often volatile regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan,
providing education to over 64,000 children, including 54,000 girls, where
few education opportunities previously existed.
