10. One of the most important ceremonies in the
Kankanay society is the Bayas in order to glorify back the
blessings they received from above. This cańao or feast is
hosted by the Kadangyan because it involves the slaughter
of carabaos in which they are known to. Also, they
celebrate the feast themselves twice while other group of
people only once a year. The word Kadangyan itself refers
to the rich who occupy the topmost rank of society and
invites all the settlers whenever it is celebrated.
During the Bayas , the rich Kadangyan calls upon his
ancestral spirits himself and appeals for their continued
support for prosperity. Everyone-rich or poor alike-
including villagers themselves from other places is invited
to the Bayas ritual since then. The female kadangyan
herself asks the spirits to keep him in good health and
wealth. This will give himself to share his blessings to the
less advantaged kankanay.
