Lesson 2
Objectives
1. Compare and contrast patterns of written texts
across disciplines.
2. Analyze writing patterns used in written text.
3. Compose of paragraph using patterns of
paragraph development
Let’s Recall
In your English 10 you had
learned how to write
argumentative, informative
essays and even speeches for
public speaking .
Let’s go back to the foundation
of essay which is a paragraph....
Let’s Recall
- A paragraph is a group of
sentence that convey an
idea.
It has three parts:
✔ Topic Sentence
✔ Supporting Sentence
✔ Clincher
Let’s Play 4 pics and 1 word!!!

She has a friend in America, Her
friend, Camille, wants to more about
her school. She will be transferring soon
in Bulacan. She then ask Betina the
steps and process of enrollment, Betina
then starts to enumerate the process
before she can finally be able to reply to
Camille.
1. Submit documents in the
registrar.
2. Take an exam.
3. Talk to the principal and
guidance counselor.
Its because the steps
don't include enough details
for Camille to know exactly
what she will do. However,
its not always simple to
organize or develop ideas,
and sometimes there’s more
than one way.
That is way, learning
the methods and ways in
supporting ideas is very
important.
What is a pattern of
a written text?
Writing Pattern or pattern of
paragraph development - refers to a
specific strategy or method that
writer uses to develop ideas in a
paragraph.
Narration
✔This pattern basically narrate
or tell a story.
✔It emphasizes the what, when,
and where something happened.
✔Action words and transitional
words characterized a narrative
paragraph.
✔Used the past form of the verb.
Remember :
Transitional words
⮚ show the change of
actions of the character
and connect events in
the story.
For Example
Afterwards,
meanwhile, at
night, at present,
next, then,
earlier…
Yesterday, Paulyn and her two sisters,
Daina and Angel had the most wonderful
time together, they strolled in the mall, they
went inside the department store and
bought bucket hats and matching shirts,
Next, for lunch they ate at their favorite
restaurant after that they watched a comedy
movie and laughed together an went home
tired but happy.
Logical sequence of actions
supplies the narrative sequence
…..
“They strolled in the mall,
they went inside the department
store, they ate at their favorite
restaurant”.
Take note:
Transitions such as yesterday,
next after that, after a long day,
were needed to emphasize
important time relationship.
Take note:
Description
✔The pattern that gives
characteristics or details on what
an object, a person or a place
looks like.
Description
✔ Use powerful and appropriate
adjectives and use effectively
the five sense ( sight, smells,
taste, hear and touch)to create
clear image on reader’s mind.
Types of Description
1. Objective Description
- used in scientific writing to
describe factual and scientific
characteristic.
Example
The Acer barbatum is a small to medium-sized,
deciduous tree usually ranging from 15 to 25 m. (50
to 80 ft.) tall when mature. Its bark is light gray and
smooth on younger trees, and it becomes ridged and
furrowed with age. Leaves are opposite and shallowly
to deeply palmately lobed, with a few blunt teeth but
no serrations. The leaf sinuses are rounded, unlike
those of red maple (Acer rubrum) which are sharply
V-shaped. Also, the sides of terminal leaf lobes are
more or less parallel, while those of red maple are
widest at the base, tapering to the tip.
Types of Description
2. Subjective Description
- used in fiction wherein a writer
uses his own perspective to
describe a person, an event or
thing.
Example
My mother had hair so dark that
it looked like a waterfall of ink. She
always kept it in a braid that fell to
her slim waist, and always tied with a
plain black band. The braid of black
slung over her shoulder, the plaits
shining like scales.
Every summer, my brothers and
I spend my vacation in my Lola’s
house. It always feels like my first
home. It is already an old house. You
could say it’s old because of the
worn- out fences.
The author is describing an
impression of what is observed in
his Lola’s house.
This is an example of
Subjective Description.
Take note:
Definition
The focus of this pattern is to
explain or give a comprehensive
understanding of a concept, a
term or an idea.
The term could be emphasized
by the following:
1.Characteristics or features
2.Function
3.Effect
4.Origin
1. Scientific Definition
⮚ defines concepts in the most
factual way, which is often used
in scientific, proper, or real world
facts
Varieties of Definition
Varieties of Definition
2. Subjective Definition
⮚ defines the objects in a more
personal way.
I was asked by my college
professor before, “What is
passion?” This is a typical
question for a painter and artist
like me. As they say you will never
excel as an artist if you don’t
have passion within you.
The given paragraph
is an example of a
subjective definition
because of the term
“passion”
Take note:
The writer even
started : with an origin
of the word.
Concluded:
By saying that passion
goes with loving what
he does.
Take note:
Classification
⮚ divides things into groups,
classes, or categories
⮚ organizes ideas into divisions
based on criteria or
standards
Different students attend various types of schools;
however, they can usually be classified as either public,
private religious, private non religious, or alternative. Public
schools are funded by the state, and the majority of students
in the United States attend them. Private religious schools
are based around a particular faith, such as Catholicism,
Judaism, and so forth. The religion is part of the every day
lives of the students and they also learn about the faiths. All
types of private schools do not receive state funding.
Therefore, private non religious schools are simply just that:
schools which do not receive state funding and have the
ability to make their own rules. Alternative schools can be
made up of a variety of different categories, such as the
Montessori program or technical schools. Most students who
attend class in an actual school building go to one of these
types of institutions.
The writer use
transitional words
such as: various types
and classified as..
This is an example of
classification
paragraph.
Take note:
What’s the paragraph?
Last Monday, I
heard a scratching on my
window sill. The next day, I
heard it again. The next day
after, I heard it again. That
time, I checked outside, and
it was my lost cat.
I will never forget
the day the salty summer
breeze last time I went to the
beach. I love to hear the
waves crashing the big
boulders of rock . It’s also
refreshing to dive in the blue
sea.
