4. INTRODUCTION
• Basketball, is a team sport in which two teams, most
commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a
rectangular court
• The primary objective of shooting a basketball through the
defender's hoop mounted 10 feet (3.048 m) high to
a backboard at each end of the court while preventing the
opposing team from shooting through their own hoop.
• Winner of a game is the team that has scored the greatest
number points at the playing time.
5. HISTORY
Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891.
Dr. Naismith was a college professor who wanted to create a
game that his physical education classes could play inside
during the long winter.
The first games used a peach baskets nailed to the wall for
rims. The first ball used was a soccer ball.
In 1893, he replaced the peach basket with iron hoops and
hammock-style basket
6. EQUIPMENTS
• The only essential equipment in a basketball game is the ball
and the court: a flat, rectangular surface with baskets at
opposite ends.
• Competitive levels require the use of more equipment such as
clocks, score sheets, scoreboard, alternating possession arrows,
and whistle-operated stop-clock systems.
7. PLAYING COURT
• A regulation basketball court in international games is
28meters long and 15 meters wide. In the NBA the court is
29 by 15 meters. Most courts have wood flooring, usually
constructed from maple planks running in the same direction
as the longer court dimension.
8. PLAYING REGULATION
• Games are played in four quarters of 10 (FIBA) or 12 minutes
(NBA). College men's games use two 20-minute halves,
college women's games use 10-minute quarters, and most
United States high school varsity games use 8-minute quarters;
however, this varies from state to state.
• 15 minutes are allowed for a half-time break under FIBA,
NBA, and NCAA rules and 10 minutes in United States high
schools.
• Teams exchange baskets for the second half.
• Status of the ball: Live and Dead
• Jump ball and alternating possession.
11. POSITIONS
• Popular descriptions of positions include:
Point guard : usually the fastest player on the team, organizes the
team's offense by controlling the ball and making sure that it gets to the
right player at the right time.
Shooting guard : creates a high volume of shots on offense, mainly
long-ranged; and guards the opponent's best perimeter player on
defense.
Small forward : often primarily responsible for scoring points via cuts
to the basket and dribble penetration; on defense seeks rebounds and
steals, but sometimes plays more actively.
Power forward: plays offensively often with their back to the basket; on
defense, plays under the basket (in a zone defense) or against the
opposing power forward (in man-to-man defense).
Center: uses height and size to score (on offense), to protect the
basket closely (on defense), or to rebound.

13. VIOLATIONS
• Most violations are committed by the team with possession of
the ball, when a player mishandles the ball or makes an illegal
move. The typical penalty for a violation is loss of the ball to
the other team.
Time Limit Violation(24 ,8 ,5 and 3seconds)
double dribble
carrying the ball
Traveling
Goaltending
14. FOULS
• A foul refers to illegal personal contact or unsportsman like
conduct on the court
PERSONAL FOUL
FLAGRANT FOULS
LOOSE BALL FOULS
TECHNICAL FOULS
TEAM FOULS
