Call for proposals, Translations of scholarly literature into Persian, Center for Iran and Persian Gulf Studies, Princeton University, deadline for submission: 21 April 2015
The grant opportunity is designed for Iranian nationals with current permanent residency in Iran.
The selection committee is chaired by Kevan Harris and Cyrus Schayegh (both of Princeton University).
According to the Census of India of 2001, India has 122 major languages and 1599 other languages are spoken by the 1.38 billion population of India. According to the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, twenty-two (22) of them are considered as official languages; viz. Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Santhali, Maithili and Dogri. Hence, Translation services are essential for various sectors. Because most people only know one or two languages, translation services assist them in obtaining necessary information in their own tongue by eliminating the language barrier. In this study, we discussed the translation service in brief, its various types & facets, working techniques and current status of translation services & available centres in India.

To build bridges across Persian and Iranian Studies programs, scholars from New York University’s Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Department and the Gallatin School (ISI-NYU), Princeton University’s Center for Iran and Persian Gulf Studies, and the University of Pennsylvania’s Middle East Center announce the Iran Graduate Student Workshop (IGSW). The workshop will provide a valuable venue for academic exchange and production, giving distinguished young scholars of the field an unrivalled opportunity to present and promote their research.
On May 4-5, 2018, the University of Pennsylvania will host the second gathering of this joint workshop, to be followed by similar meetings at the other campuses every two years. This second workshop in 2018 will consist of PhD students that are near ABD status and preparing their dissertation proposals (i.e., typically in their 2nd or 3rd year of graduate work). In addition, the first cohort will participate again, as discussants, in the 2018 workshop, as they approach the end of their graduate work.
Applicants for the second round, in 2018, must focus on modern Iran (roughly 18th-20th centuries), other countries of the Persianate world, or diasporas, or conduct relational histories and comparative work; and will be drawn from disciplines and programs in the humanities and social sciences, including anthropology, art history, economics, history, literature, politics, sociology, and related fields.

Modern Saudi Poetry: Mohammad Hasan Awwad’s Night and Me, in Balance - الشعر ...Al Baha University
Arabic poetry is the heart of all types of literature in all Arabic realms. Consistent with this generalization, it can be right that the development of poetry in the modern age, among Arabs, is a positive measure. At that argument, the same would be focused on modern Saudi literature since it is typically considered a central, authoritative, and undivided part of Arabic poetry.
In this paper, the researcher has attempted to illustrate some literary aspects of modern Arabic poetry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as an instance of the greatness of Arabic poetry with a particular reference to a contemporary Saudi poet. The study starts with an introduction to the condition of poetry in Arabia.
In the first section of the study, the researcher points up the importance of Arabic poetry as an Arabic literature genre. The second section deals with poetry and literary movement in Saudi Arabia as the central section of the investigation. After that, the task moves ahead to deal with a model of the modern Arabic poetry in the kingdom, Mohammad Hasan Awwad, a modernized rebellious poet with stark poetry, then the researcher, analytically and critically, sheds light on some selected verses of one of the poems of Awwad, Night and Me. The study finishes with a discussion and a brief conclusion.

On the occasion of the 4th international conference of the Perso-Indica project (http://www.perso-indica.net/), we would like to consider our main object of research—the Persian translations and original works bearing on Indic cultures—in a wider perspective than has generally been the case. We aim to do so by comparing the Indo-Persian movement of translation that took place in the subcontinent from the 13th century onwards with other processes of translations operating primarily from and to non-Muslim languages (e.g. Greek, Syriac, Pehlevi, Sanskrit into Arabic, etc.; Arabic into Latin; Greek into Ottoman Turkish, etc.) and, secondarily, between different languages of Muslim societies (e. g. Arabic into Persian, Turkish, Malay, Sub-Saharan languages, etc.; Persian into Urdu, Turkish, Malay, etc.). We have therefore invited contributions bearing on such movements of translation in different regions of the Muslim world between the 7th and 19th centuries, and highlighting the ways in which each specific translation process articulated the relation between source, “bridge” and target languages.

The second lecture considers the ways in which a shrine could encourage formaƟ on of an individual tradition of exclusive claim to the shrine and its material benefits and how that tradion on led to the formation of a new city. The third lecture suggests how the meaning of a building conceived to commemorate the glory of an individual and his descendants could be reshaped to legitimize new ideologies and the final lecture considers the sacred space created by a holy artefact and the ways in which its community exploited that space. All the lectures will link the ever-changing architecture to the societal contexts.

Program and abstracts, conference on "Fatimids and Umayyads: Competing Caliph...Encyclopaedia Iranica
Relations between the Fatimid caliphate and its neighbour and opponent, the Umayyad caliphate of al-Andalus constitute a field of study that merits careful and extensive consideration. Scholarship has tended to study both dynasties separately and the existing entanglements between the two caliphates have been noted, albeit briefly, in a number of academic publications.
The project Fatimids and Umayyads: Competing Caliphates endeavours to place both dynasties in context by creating an academic forum in which to reflect upon and illustrate the processes and mechanisms of interaction, and also to explore and problematise the existence of crosspollination. Various scenarios (historical, social, intellectual, economic, legal, theological, religious, cultural, technical, visual, and artistic) are considered in order to assess affinities, as well as discrepancies, connections and contrasts with regard to how these shaped the Fatimid impact on Umayyad dominions and vice versa.

Call for abstracts, international conference on "Environmental Approaches in ...Encyclopaedia Iranica
This international conference is meant to be a forum for exchange of ideas about environmental history, and methods and theories, by scholars engaged in the study of the pre-modern Islamic world. Papers from the fields of history, historical geography, archaeology and art history, natural sciences, and historical anthropology are most welcome, as well as studies of a more theoretical (bust historically grounded) nature. We welcome the participation of doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars, as well as senior scholars. The chronological coverage is the period of the Islamic Conquests until the early nineteenth-century (pre-Tanzimat), with a geographical coverage of all regions of the world under the control of an Islamic regime. While our focus remains the Mamluk (and the larger “Middle Islamic”) period of the 13th-16th centuries and the territories of the Mamluk state – and while we aim to promote environmental lines of inquiry in Mamluk Studies – this conference encourages transregional and comparative approaches and particularly welcomes papers from Ottoman Studies.

The conference brings together researchers working on Shia minorities outside of the so-called “Muslim heartland” (North Africa, Middle East, Central and South Asia). The conference focuses on Shia minorities in Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America, Sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia that emerged out of migration from the Middle East and South Asia in the 20th and 21st centuries, in particular. The papers presented at the conference offer unique comparative insights into Shia minorities in a variety of contexts across the globe. The conference is organised by the new Chester Centre for Islamic Studies and held in conjunction with a research project on transnational Shia networks that operate between Britain and the Middle East, funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation.

Program, conference on the reception of European Orientalism in the East, Dar...Encyclopaedia Iranica
The purpose of this conference is to investigate the reception by Muslim scholars in India, Egypt, and Palestine of European scholarship on Islam, and to interrogate the impact of travel to India and the Mashriq on the nature of the scholarship produced by Europeans. Establishing personal relationships, experiencing Islam as a practiced religion, examining archeological sites and artifacts as well as manuscripts, learning about Islam from Muslims, and refining linguistic abilities were some of the many experiences for the Europeans that emerged from their travel. The interactions were multi-confessional, as Jews as well as Christians were among the European scholars who traveled East, and also among those in the East who met their European counterparts.
The broader intellectual, political, and scholarly frameworks within India, Egypt, and Palestine that shaped the reception of the European interventions has received little attention to date and will be the primary focus of the conference. Papers will examine selected educational institutions, including the universities of al-Azhar, Aligarh, Punjab, and Jerusalem, and the time frame will range from the mid-nineteenth century to the years prior to World War II.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Program Description
The Center for Iran & Persian Gulf Studies at Princeton University (CIPGS), founded in 2014, strives to
build a world-class interdisciplinary center for strengthening the field of Iran and Persian Gulf Studies.
The mission is to promote and support innovative endeavors and intellectual exchanges in this field.
As one of its research initiatives, CIPGS announces the Howard Baskerville Translation Fund to support
preparation and translation of international texts of value to the scholarly study of social sciences and
humanities that are currently unavailable and unpublished in Iran. The fund is named after Howard
Conklin Baskerville, a member of Princeton’s class of 1907. Baskerville was an American who,
immediately following his graduation from Princeton, served as a teacher at the American Memorial
Presbyterian School in Tabriz, Iran. He later joined the Iranian Constitutional movement and was killed in
battle at the age of 24. It was said in his funeral eulogy, “Young America, in the person of young
Baskerville, gave this sacrifice to the young constitution of Iran.” The Baskerville Translation Fund
signifies the Center’s goal to enrich the historical rapport between Princeton University and Iran.
The fund invites proposals for translations of original texts of significant academic and scholarly value in
any foreign language that are sought to be translated into Persian and published in the Iranian market to
support Iran’s academic and professional community. Of particular interest are texts that can be utilized in
post-graduate academic settings. This includes the fields of history, politics, economics, law, sociology,
anthropology, literature, art, and cultural studies.
The Baskerville Fund is steered by a Selection Committee, chaired by Dr. Kevan Harris and Dr. Cyrus
Schayegh of Princeton University. The Selection Committee consists of notable scholars in the social
sciences and humanities inside Iran as well as internationally.

All proposed translators must be Iranian nationals with current permanent residency in Iran.
All proposed translators must have demonstrated previous experience with formal academic translations
from target language to Persian.
