BASIC TRANSITIONS
Editing
EDITING

Editing is the process of manipulating and rearranging video sequences and
sound to create new work
CUT

Cut is the most common transaction within editing films, etc. it is where you
replace one shot with another.
This transaction is fast and effective, it is the best way to keep the action
rolling, other transactions can slow the pace of the film, or they can be
distracting.
JUMP CUT

The jump cut is where two sequential shots of the same subject are taken
from camera positions that vary only slightly . The subject in the camera shots
appears to “jump” which is discontinuous.
The jump cut is sometimes considered a violation of classical editing, it gives
the appearance of continuous time and space. It also de-emphasizes editing.
FADE

Fade is where one shot gradually fades from one colour to another such as
black to white. This is different to crossfading.
It is usually from/to black which can show the start or end of a scene, it
represents the importance of change.
The slower the fade the more significant the end or the start is, if it is a quick
fade though however it can representing the time lapse of a few minuets. If it
is long or drawn out it can show that there has been a bigger change.
CROSSFADE/DISSOLVE/MIX

The crossfade is a gradual fade from one shot to another, it is slower and
more relaxed than the cut.
This slows the pace of the film or video, it can create the mood of the film. If
can also show a sequence of scenic shots, it can represent the passing of time
or change of location, the speed of this transaction can vary.
WIPE

The wipe transaction is where one shot progressively replaces another one.
It is a good way to show change in location or viewpoint, it often has a
coloured border around it.
DIGITAL EFFECT

Digital effect covers various things such as colour replacement, animated
effects, pixilation, focus drops and lighting effects.
Although you can use these while filming as they are on most cameras, these
are best to be added during post production
