A matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set, or
distant location that allows filmmakers to create the illusion of an
environment that is nonexistent in real life or would otherwise be too

Avoid symmetry.
Don’t paint objects flat-on to the viewer.
Follow the principle of balance.
Understand the golden mean.
Obey the rule of thirds.
Avoid Symmetry
• Apabila menggunakan simetris
secara blak-blakan, maka
komposisinya akan terlihat
membosankan.
• Komposisi simetris bisa menjadi
sangat powerful apabila
digunakan oleh seorang master
(seperti shot yang digunakan oleh
Film Director Stanley Kubric).
Don’t paint objects flat-on to the viewer.
Object yang datar membuat komposisi menjadi tidak menarik.
Untuk membuat object tidak terlihat datar kita bisa mengatur sudut
pengambilan gambar untuk menampilkan siluet dan view dari object
tersebut.
The Principle of Balance
Fulcrum-lever rule atau cara tercepat untuk menyeimbangkan banyak obyek
dalam komposisi.
Kompisisi yang ada di gambarkan sebagai seorang yang berat bersama
seorang bayi di atas jungkitan.
Apabila orang yang berat itu terlalu jauh dari titik tengah maka si bayi tidak
akan bisa menyeimbangkannya.
The Principle of Balance
Untuk menyeimbangkannya, orang yang berat itu harus
mendekat ke titik tumpu jungkitan tersebut.
Prinsip yang sama bekerja dengan obyek-obyek yang
akan di komposisikan. Obyek yang lebih besar terletak di
dekat pusat komposisi dapat diimbangin dengan obyek
yang lebih kecil di bagian sisinya.
The Golden Mean
• Digunakan para artists pada zamanRenaissance.
• Point of interset diletakkan di titik persimpangan dua garis
horisontal yang memiliki perbandingan 1:1,6 atau 38/62
Dengan menggunakan The Golden Mean, point of
interest dari suatu konsep tidak selalu berada di
tengah.
