2. Task:
Southampton Solent University (SSU) is a young, vibrant and
ambitious university located in the centre of Southampton, on
the South coast of England. As it sets to further expand into the
21st century, SSU is taking initiatives to reach out to its target
audience of potential students. As part of this marketing
strategy, SSU ‘the Client’ has commissioned you ‘the Designer’
to formulate a proposal for the design of a temporary structure
in the City Centre to be used for promoting the courses and
services offered by SSU. The tutors will act as the Client agents.
Location:
The location chosen for the ‘Hub’ is near the Bargate, with
Southampton’s ancient medieval wall providing the backdrop for
the centre – see figure 1 below. The total floor area of the
centre is approximately 100m2 (± 10%); you can choose a shape
that best fits your chosen concept.
Objectives:
1. To explore the issues surrounding the design,
planning and construction of temporary structures through the
use of expressive language and structural articulation.
2. To showcase the unique selling points of
Southampton Solent University I order to appeal to its target
audience ‘the User’.
3. To produce a creative and fun scheme through the use of
various drawing and presentation techniques.
Budget
There would be budget constraints on this type of projects,
normally set by the Client. For this project, there is no
requirement to meet a particular cost, however you will be
asked to justify incorporating items of considerably higher
expense than usual.
Zones and internal space:
The Hub should be planned to have two zones:
1. General display area to promote SSU and its services.
2. Course promotion area focussing specifically on your
own course, i.e. Architectural Technology or Interior Design.
The two zones don’t have to be physically separate from each other!
The internal space should, typically, include:
• A focal point
• Display panels, cabinets, shelves, Information points
• Demonstration/interactive areas
Depending on your chosen theme, you can include other features,
subject to the Client’s approval.
3. Planning permission for temporary
buildings?
Planning permission is generally required
for temporary structures and it is
important the council knows the size,
length of time it will be there and
application of the building .
The bargate?
The bargate was built in 1180 AD
during Norman times and formed part
of the wall of the city, with
Southampton being a major port city
the bargate became a point of entry to
and from the north. It is a grade 1 listed
building.
I have 100m2 (± 10%) to work with and fit
roughly in to the space created in the image
above.
Sourcing materials for model
I will be sourcing materials from
Perry's and hobby craft of
Southampton as well as some
provided by the university
