These slides are from a webcast originally presented by VDC Research on 1/20/2010. 2009 was a challenging year for barcode suppliers. And while the RFID segment did not experience negative growth, it did contract. Many deploying enterprises cut their budgets, planned projects were placed on hold, and pilot projects didn’t progress to full scale deployments. The good news is that VDC’s most recent data suggests that this is changing. Many suppliers are seeing their opportunity pipelines rebound and are anxiously awaiting a gradual return to growth in 2010. In this webcast, we discuss the opportunities and challenges facing barcode and RFID equipment providers in 2010.
This document provides an overview of satellite communication and satellite systems. It discusses different types of transmission systems including radio, coaxial cable, and optical fiber systems. It describes how radio systems use electromagnetic waves to transmit signals and the portions of the frequency spectrum used. The document outlines the layers of the atmosphere and how the ionosphere and troposphere can propagate radio waves. It also categorizes different types of radio communication including ionosphere communication, line of sight microwave communication, and troposphere scatter communication. The document discusses advantages of satellite communication and components of a satellite communication network including the space and ground segments. It covers topics like satellite orbits, frequency bands used, and multiple access techniques in satellite systems.
Barcode technology was invented in 1948 by Bernard Silver at Drexel University to provide a rapid and efficient way to represent data by varying the widths and spacings of parallel lines. The first working system used ultraviolet ink but it faded too easily. Later, barcodes were improved and became a machine-readable representation of data attached to objects. Barcodes are now used widely in retail, warehousing, shipping and other industries to automatically identify products and collect data. They provide advantages such as increased speed, accuracy and information storage compared to manual identification systems.
The document discusses RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology and its applications. It describes what RFID is, how RFID tags work, and examples of RFID being used for identification of objects, tracking objects in supply chains, access control, contactless payment, and inferring human activities through interactions with tagged objects. The document also provides an example of using an RFID reader and tags in a Java program to detect tagged objects.
Mr. Woodland and Silver developed the barcode after being asked by a supermarket chain to find a better way to track inventory. Woodland drew lines of different thicknesses representing codes while visiting Miami in 1948, which led to the Universal Product Code barcode. A barcode uses a scanner to read patterns of bars and spaces that represent data about an object. It begins with a start character, ends with a stop character, and may include a checksum for error checking. Major barcode types include linear codes like UPC, Code 39, Code 128, and 2D codes like PDF417 and Data Matrix that can encode more data in less space.
This document discusses barcode technology. It provides definitions of barcodes as automatic identification technologies that encode information in dark bars and white spaces. Barcodes are used to accurately track and identify items. Common uses of barcodes include tracking inventory in warehouses and retail stores. There are two main types of barcodes: linear barcodes and 2D barcodes. Barcode scanners are used to read barcodes and input the encoded data into computer systems. Benefits of barcodes include increased accuracy, automation, and productivity. Potential disadvantages include system failures causing delays and issues reading damaged or poor quality barcodes.

11. What tactics did suppliers take to insulate
themselves from the recession?
• To begin with, none did. Virtually every supplier of AIDC and RFID equipment suffered in
