BARB stands for Broadcaster's Audience Research Board. It was set up in 1981 to provide television audience measurement services for broadcasters and the advertising industry in an independent, not-for-profit company. BARB data allows TV channels to analyze which of their programs performed well and help guide future programming decisions. Example viewership figures are shown for three murder mystery dramas: Death Comes to Pemberley on BBC One had 1.07 million viewers; Agatha Christie's Marple on ITV had 4.57 million viewers; and Midsomer Murders on ITV had 7.81 million viewers.
