Everyday Mathematics was extensively researched and field tested before publication. It uses hands-on activities and problems rooted in children's experiences to build mathematical understanding over time. The program encourages multiple strategies and flexibility. Students engage with math throughout the day, not just in dedicated lessons. Resources are provided for parents to support learning at home and work with teachers.

Slide 1 Welcome. <br />This is an exciting time for OJRSD as we begin Everyday Mathematics in grades K - 6 <br />Slide 2<br />Everyday Mathematics was researched extensively.<br />Written one grade level at a time and field tested in classrooms before publication. <br />It is based on research that that Children learn mathematics through hands-on activities that build on their interests and connect to their experiences.<br />Young children can grasp mathematical concepts traditionally saved for older students when concepts are explored with concrete materials and pictures. <br />Slide 3<br />Using a problem solving approach, Children learn mathematics while doing things that are meaningful and productive.<br />Children are encouraged to solve problems in multiple ways, creating flexibility of thinking.<br />People rarely master a new skill or idea the first time they experience it.<br />In keeping with the way children learn and develop, activities in each strand or topic begin on a simple level and increase in complexity over time.<br />Therefore, mastery is developed over time.<br />Slide 4<br />Activities are meaningful and productive.<br />Children engage in mathematics by doing daily routines (attendance, weather, calendar), not just during math time.<br />Emphasis is on experience and understanding with the focus on the learning process.<br />Everyday Mathematics is aligned to Pennsylvania Math Standards. This program encourages and supports high expectations for students.<br />Slide 5<br />Copies of a Parent’s Guide to Everyday Mathematics is available this evening for Kinder, Primary Grades 1 – 3, and Intermediate Grades 4- 6.<br />Family Letter packs which include Answer Keys for Homework for Trimester 1 are also available this evening for each grade.<br />Students’ homework in most grades (except kinder) will come home in a workbook called Home Links or Study Links, depending on grade level.<br />The Student Reference Book provides assistance to students and parents concerning what and how the math is being taught in the classroom. This ensures that home and school are truly working together to help our children become strong mathematicians. Resources are also available online.
