China is the second largest market for baby food and infant formula in the world. Key segments include infant formula milk, baby food such as cereals and bottled baby food. Consumer spending on these products has risen due to factors like increasing disposable income and more working women. The baby food market has grown significantly in recent years and is forecast to continue expanding. However, falling birth rates could pose a threat to future industry growth. Major players operate in the market but domestic formula brands face challenges from foreign competitors.

Baby Cereal Food Manufacturing Industry. Start a Profitable Baby Food Production Business
Baby Foods are those foods which are given to babies and infants for their sustenance during the few nascent years of their lives and can be demarcated into two types comprising of Infant Formula and Baby Foods. Infant Formulas serve as a replacement of mother’s milk as it emulates the nutritional attributes of a mother’s milk. And, baby foods are soft minced and mashed vegetables, fruits, meats, cereals, etc. for babies consumption and are sold in the form of purees or powders (to be consumed with the addition of water) and snacks.
Baby foods are essentially the first alternative to the breast milk during the growth and development of babies. Purees of natural fruits and vegetables are given as nutritional food for babies initially. As they grow, the baby food available for them varies from infant formula to solid dried baby foods. Currently, health conscious parents are opting for organic baby foods over conventional baby food.

MAM Baby Products - Strategic Planning and Leadership Analyses
Myles E. Mangram
SMC University, Switzerland
Abstract
MAM Baby has established itself as a global leader in the multi-billion baby products
industry. This case study analysis suggests a strategic planning approach the company
should consider in order for it to maintain its global position and/or to maximize its global
growth prospects. This strategic planning approach utilizes several important leadership/
management tools including a ‘PEST’ analysis and a ‘SWOT’ analysis. In developing a
strategic planning approach, it also suggests strategic alternatives for MAM Baby to
contemplate in pursuit of its international growth agenda. Finally, it provides a requisite
strategic leadership framework for its strategic planning and anticipative global growth.
Keywords: MAM Baby, strategic leadership, strategic planning, strategic alternatives
Introduction
MAM Baby is a global participant in the worldwide baby products industry. This article
addresses the questions and issues involving a critical case analysis of MAM Baby’s
strategic planning and leadership in context of its anticipated continued global growth.
The Strategic planning analysis includes an overview of the baby products industry, a
MAM Baby company overview, a MAM Baby “PEST” Analysis, and a SWOT Analysis of
the company. It concludes with a leadership analysis of MAM Baby in context of requisite
global leadership qualities and characteristics.
Strategic planning analysis
Strategic planning reflects an organizations strategy defining process and the resources
required to pursue this strategy. However, in order to define a selected strategy, it is
important to understand the industry in which the organization operates, and the
organization itself. An overview of each is provided, followed by two key business
analysis techniques often used by organizations in strategic planning—a PEST Analysis
followed by a SWOT Analysis.
Baby products industry overview
The baby products industry (also often referred to the “baby care products market”)
represents a large global market and offers products in a number of consumer segments.
The main segments of the baby products industry include diapers, baby food, bottles &
pacifiers, toiletries, skin care, and hair care (B2B Information, 2010). Baby apparel and
footwear are sometimes included in this ‘baby products’ industry classification. Industry
products are typically targeted at babies between the ages of 0 months to 18 months.
However, some analysts broaden this age range to include “babies” between the ages of
0 months to 4 years (B2B Information; Velagapudi, 2011). It is precisely this broad depth
of products and broad ranges of ages which have caused debate and confusion about
the definition, size, and growth of the global baby products industry.

Indian Probiotic Dairy industry is evolving at a steady pace with opportunities for tremendous growth in near future. India being the largest producer of milk and having world’s highest cattle population has a distinct advantage in the Probiotic field. Indian Probiotic industry is expected to be more than double by 2015 from its current size in 2011. Brands that exist now in Indian Probiotic industry are Nestle, Amul, Yakult Danone and Mother Dairy along with other minor players operating in different regions in their own capacities. Although there are quite a number of challenges in front of domestic and foreign companies entering the Indian Probiotic market, but the advantages associated with the industrial growth prospects outnumber the challenges in an easy and elegant way. The strong fundamental factors for the Probiotic industry in India will pave way for the growth of Indian Dairy Industry in the near future.
Indian Probiotic Dairy Market, Market Share and Forecast:
Amul is the leader with nearly 70% market share in 2011 and is likely to be at the top in the coming years as well. In 2011, Amul Probiotic share accounted for more than double than the combined share of its competitors like Mother Dairy, Nestle and Yakult. Nestle and Mother Dairy is holding second and third position in the Indian Probiotic Market.
Probiotic Dairy Products (Yougurt, Ice Cream, Drink) and Forecast:
Probiotic Yogurt is the leading category which accounts for more than 50% share in 2011 followed by Probiotic Ice Cream and Probiotic drink.
Probiotic Dairy Products Sales Volume and Forecast:
It is expected that Probiotic yogurt sales will cross 100,000 Thousand packets by 2015. Amul is the leader in Probiotic yogurt sales in India and is likely to remain as a leader in the years to come. Probiotic drink sales volume is likely to reach a little less than 100,000 Thousand bottles by the year 2015. In probiotic drink sales volume, Yakult is way ahead than Mother Dairy. Being a lonely player in the probiotic ice cream market in India Amul is gaining advantage.
Although there are formidable challenges to be encountered, the prospects of the market expanding in a steadfast way look bright. As Probiotics are not previewed under any health related law in India and with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) still framing the guidelines for Probiotic sales (ICMR status report on Probiotics, 2009), Probiotics face no hindrance from government health officials on its sales.
The Indian baby care market has been witnessing speedy transformation with rising income levels and changing consumer behaviour. At present, the Indian market is in the emerging stage of development and is expected to become one of the world’s fastest-growing baby care markets. Moreover, large population base in the age group of 0-4 years and increasing willingness of parents to spend more on baby products will be the primary driving force in near future. Rising middle class contribution, introduction of baby care products for the bottom of the pyramid segment will drive the market towards steady growth. Most of the companies operating in this segment are going for product innovation and development.
The global market for organic dairy products is expected to grow from $ 16,307.0 million in 2021 to $ 23,193.8 million in 2026. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.3% over the forecast period (2021-2026). Some of the market's key participants are AMUL, Arla Foods UK Plc, Dairy Farmers of America Inc. (DFA), Danone, Dean Foods Company, Fonterra Group Cooperative Limited, Groupe Lactalis SA, Kraft Foods, Megmilk Snow Brand, Meiji Dairies Corp., Organic Valley, Parmalat S.P.A, Royal FrieslandCampina N.V., Sancor Cooperativas, Unilever. Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.
Key Topics:
Olfactory Genes:
3% of the human genome accounts for olfactory genes.
400 genes for odorant receptors.
Olfactory Membrane:
Located in the superior part of the nasal cavity.
Medially: Folds downward along the superior septum.
Laterally: Folds over the superior turbinate and upper surface of the middle turbinate.
Total surface area: 5-10 square centimeters.
Olfactory Mucosa:
Olfactory Cells: Bipolar nerve cells derived from the CNS (100 million), with 4-25 olfactory cilia per cell.
Sustentacular Cells: Produce mucus and maintain ionic and molecular environment.
Basal Cells: Replace worn-out olfactory cells with an average lifespan of 1-2 months.
Bowman’s Gland: Secretes mucus.
Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.
Primitive, less old, and new olfactory systems with different path

AT significantly improved 5YS (66.3% vs. 34.8%) (P=0.00000 by log-rank test) only for LCP with N1-2. Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and PT early-invasive LC (rank=1), PT N0—N12 (rank=2), thrombocytes/CC (3), erythrocytes/CC (4), eosinophils/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), segmented neutrophils/CC (8), stick neutrophils/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10); leucocytes/CC (11). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (area under ROC curve=1.0; error=0.0).
CONCLUSIONS: 5YS of LCP after radical procedures significantly depended on: 1) PT early-invasive cancer; 2) PT N0--N12; 3) cell ratio factors; 4) blood cell circuit; 5) biochemical factors; 6) hemostasis system; 7) AT; 8) LC characteristics; 9) LC cell dynamics; 10) surgery type: lobectomy/pneumonectomy; 11) anthropometric data. Optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for LC are: 1) screening and early detection of LC; 2) availability of experienced thoracic surgeons because of complexity of radical procedures; 3) aggressive en block surgery and adequate lymph node dissection for completeness; 4) precise prediction; 5) adjuvant chemoimmunoradiotherapy for LCP with unfavorable prognosis.

Title: Sense of Taste
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the structure and function of taste buds.
Describe the relationship between the taste threshold and taste index of common substances.
Explain the chemical basis and signal transduction of taste perception for each type of primary taste sensation.
Recognize different abnormalities of taste perception and their causes.
Key Topics:
Significance of Taste Sensation:
Differentiation between pleasant and harmful food
Influence on behavior
Selection of food based on metabolic needs
Receptors of Taste:
Taste buds on the tongue
Influence of sense of smell, texture of food, and pain stimulation (e.g., by pepper)
Primary and Secondary Taste Sensations:
Primary taste sensations: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Umami
Chemical basis and signal transduction mechanisms for each taste
Taste Threshold and Index:
Taste threshold values for Sweet (sucrose), Salty (NaCl), Sour (HCl), and Bitter (Quinine)
Taste index relationship: Inversely proportional to taste threshold
Taste Blindness:
Inability to taste certain substances, particularly thiourea compounds
Example: Phenylthiocarbamide
Structure and Function of Taste Buds:
Composition: Epithelial cells, Sustentacular/Supporting cells, Taste cells, Basal cells
Features: Taste pores, Taste hairs/microvilli, and Taste nerve fibers
Location of Taste Buds:
Found in papillae of the tongue (Fungiform, Circumvallate, Foliate)
Also present on the palate, tonsillar pillars, epiglottis, and proximal esophagus
Mechanism of Taste Stimulation:
Interaction of taste substances with receptors on microvilli
Signal transduction pathways for Umami, Sweet, Bitter, Sour, and Salty tastes
Taste Sensitivity and Adaptation:
Decrease in sensitivity with age
Rapid adaptation of taste sensation
Role of Saliva in Taste:
Dissolution of tastants to reach receptors
Washing away the stimulus
Taste Preferences and Aversions:
Mechanisms behind taste preference and aversion
Influence of receptors and neural pathways
Impact of Sensory Nerve Damage:
Degeneration of taste buds if the sensory nerve fiber is cut
Abnormalities of Taste Detection:
Conditions: Ageusia, Hypogeusia, Dysgeusia (parageusia)
