1. Passbooks were used to control the movement of the
blacks, especially when they moved from a black area
into a white area. They had to be carried by the blacks
and shown to the police whenever they asked for it.
2. If caught without their pass, the blacks were probably
arrested, taken away to the police station where they
were kept to answer many questions. Finally they were
perhaps escorted back to their homes.
3. The people are singing or shouting and clenching their
fist in a sign of victory. It gives the impression that they
have been waiting for this moment for a very long time.
They look both cheerful and determined to stick
together and carry on their fight.
